Tomorrow's trends today

Last updated on: February 9th, 2011

Barry Irwin is South Africa’s most successful international buyer. Has been for years.

Barry’s eye for a horse is unrivalled. His purchases come at all sorts of prices, with all sorts of pedigree backgrounds.

Barry’s a trend setter, making fashion for others to follow, but only years later.

And he’s a seller of note, too, nowadays.

So here are tomorrow’s trends.
Today.

Here’s what Barry bought at the Cape Premier Sale.

#22 Jet Master filly, half sister to Gr1 winner Talahatchie, 3-part sister to Gr1 placed Lizarre; from Klifdrif Stud, selling as agent for WJ Engelbrecht – R1 million

#62 Imperial Stride filly, second foal of half sister to Gr1 sprinter Honour The Guest; from Netherfield Stud – R120k

#107 Toreador colt, second foal of full sister to Monsieur Dominque; from Hemel ‘n Aarde – R400k

#139 Western Winter full sister to Gr1 Nania, from the Gr1 family of Set Afire, Royal Chalice; from Lammerskraal – R550k

#233 Trppi filly, first foal of 4-time winning full sister to Gr3 Her Way, the pair sprinters; from Highlands – R700k

#237 Fort Wood half sister to a pair of SW’s by minor sires, English female line; from Moutonshoek – R200k

#270 Jet Master filly, second foal of half sister to Gr1 The Sheik & Al Nitak, from family of Derby winner Top Seller; from Ambiance – R500k

The books were (sort of) balanced through a Captain Al full brother to Captain’s Lover (and half brother to Ebony Flyer), and a Captain Al 3-part sister to Gr1 Cataloochee, both bred by Barry’s Team Valor. Bought, respectively, by Mike Bass (R1.7 million) and Limpo Retail (R250k).

Trading sure is fun!
