After a ‘Swedish Sojourn’ that saw Magic Moreira add another country to his winning hit-list, Joao is back in Singapore and ready to fire on Friday night.
Moreira has a full-book of rides on the 10 race all-Polytrack card and handful of winners would not surprise.
But it won’t all be about the Brazilian Ace on Friday with strong field lining up for the Causeway Classic Stakes (race 7) – a SGD $150,000 ‘mini-feature’ over 1800m.
Moreira rides the likely punters elect in DUJARDIN and the Laurie Laxon-trained 5YO looks very well placed to continue his great run of form on the Polytrack surface.
The MAGIC RING gelding did enough in Emirates Singapore Derby to think 52.5kg at the set-weight conditions is a luxury today and given he has won at both attempts on the Polytrack, he must be the horse to beat.
Stephen Baster – fresh from riding four winners at Kranji last Sunday – can continue his golden run and his mount, FREEZEMASTER, looks the biggest danger to DUJARDIN.
The RESET 5YO lost no friends in defeat last time out in nice company and given the ease of his win two starts ago and a win on the surface on his CV, he will go very close.
Race 9 – a Novice event over 1200m – also looks a beauty and while Baster and Moreira have strong winning hopes in PITSTOP and SUPER JUNIOR respectively, it could be Barend Vorster on SUPER KENNY who visits the winners circle.
Like Baster, Vorster is in red-hot form coming off a treble from last Sunday and the popular South African hoop will be hoping SUPER KENNY, the beaten favourite in the Juvenile Championship, can bounce back to the winning form he showed on debut when he won by nine-lengths.
Two great races, three in-form jockeys and hopefully….a good night for punting!
Best Bets; EMERALD HILL (race 10, win), SUPER KENNY (race 9, win), HAPPY ENDING (race 6, value).
Bankers for Jackpots: Race 7 (5, 6, and 7), race 8 (1, 2, 5, 7, 8 and 9), race 9 (5, 8, 9 and 11) and race 10 (1).

Selections; 7 SANTA ANITA – 6 SAMURAI KID – 9 HIS MY IDOL – 1 GERMAN ROULETTE
Multiple entries from astute trainers and a gaggle of class droppers confuse this Class 5 over 1100m. Sam Chua has an extremely good record in these races and he has three entries. SANTA ANITA has been placed at its last two starts in similar events, once when ridden by Moreira and he gets another chance here. The horse should be on or near the lead most of the way and will be hard to run down, though the concern is that in most of his races he does not fight strongly enough at the finish. The stablemate SAMURAI KID is getting into the veteran class, but he is a five time winner. He led last start and boxed on well for little P Dellorto, with S John taking the ride a more patient exhibition can be anticipated and he will run out a strong 1100m. Sam’s third runner, SHEN KIM to be ridden by Tommy Chang, is returning to Class 5 where he won twice in March and April. His best efforts have been when allowed a soft lead in front and with the man they call “Tommy Gun” on top from barrier 3, that is where he will almost certainly be. Leslie Khoo is also no slouch when it comes to Class 5s and he has two runners, GERMAN ROULETTE, whose form is woeful but now finds himself in Class 5, his only decent run in Singapore was over this trip back in April where he led and was beaten only two lengths in a Class 4. The in-form Stephen Baster takes the ride and if there is market support he could be one to watch. The stablemate GYPSY MAGIC is also a class dropper and he won over 1200m on the Poly back in May. Those of the trainers only have single entries, HIS MY IDOL may well be suited by the likely high speed of this event, and he generally runs on well. OH YES OH NOE won well first up last start at long odds and could repeat, and QUI EST LA is dropping back to his winning grade, though he may like it a little longer.
1 GERMAN ROULETTE *** Stablemate of GYPSY MAGIC. Down in class and has in-form rider. Best run in 8 starts was in April over this trip when it led and was beaten less than 2 lengths in Class 4 race. Watch market. 6.50
2 GYPSY MAGIC *** Stablemate of GERMAN ROULETTE. Class dropper who won a similar race when last in Class 5. Well drawn, keep safe. 6.50
3 OH YES OH NOE ** Good effort to win first up after returning from bleeding attack; well drawn and could repeat. 10
4 QUI EST LA * Ran on well enough last start but is better over longer. 25
5 SHEN KIM *** Stablemate of SANTA ANITA and SAMURAI KID. Down in grade and won two on end when last in this class. If he can get a soft lead may be hard to run down. 10
6 SAMURAI KID *** Stablemate of SHEN KIM and SAMURAI KID. Veteran who generally runs on well, will be suited by strong speed and senior rider. 5.00
7 SANTA ANITA *** Stablemate of SHEN KIM and SAMURAI KID. Engagement of top rider significant after good efforts at previous two starts but can be weak at the finish. 3.50
8 THREE KINGS * Wants further. 25
9 HIS MY IDOL *** Normally thereabouts in these and could be running right over the top of the leaders. 5.00
10 KING FLIGHT * Yet to take off. 33
Selections; 4 RED RIVER ROCK – 3 MISSION EMPIRE – 9 PERFECT LOVE – 8 MACHFIVE
A bunch of relatively lightly raced three year-olds take each other on over 1200m on the Polytrack. RED RIVER ROCK is a Pat Shaw-trained galloper and he has put in sound performances at all five starts; the winkers go on and Saimee Jumaat who has been getting a few rides from Pat lately will be keen to knock in a winner for such a strong stable. MISSION EMPIRE is one of Leticia Dragon’s and she has turned to Joao Moreira for inspiration. The horse found the Magic Millions too hot last start but his previous effort where he raced well at long odds when ridden by the apprentice S Alif, would indicate a strong chance in this field. MACHFIVE ran an even race at his first start and Stephen Baster retains the mount for Michael Freedman – improvement can be expected. PERFECT LOVE was not that far away at its initial outing behind SUPER JUNIOR; with Ivaldo Santana taking the mount he can be expected to make a bid from the number one alley. INVINCIBLE DRAGON ran a nice race at his inaugural attempt over 1400m, he is back in trip here but could be one to consider.
1 SEA BUTTERFLY ** Trials well enough but has not shown anything in races – one more chance from decent draw. 20
2 AMERICAN LION * Carried wide last start and could improve but bad gate again a concern. 20
3 MISSION EMPIRE *** Found Magic Millions Juvenile Championship too hot; previous form good and engagement of Moreira significant. 4.00
4 RED RIVER ROCK *** Winkers on, has raced well at all previous starts and should be on the pace all the way. Hard to beat. 2.20
5 FULL OF DRAGONS * By Pendragon, will want it much longer. 50
6 GOLDEN CHALICE * Beaten a long way but ran on nicely at first start. Later. 33
7 INVINCIBLE DRAGON ** Good effort over 1400m at first start, Back to 1200m and could show up. 12
8 MACHFIVE *** Raced greenly at first start. From strong stable with top rider and should be improved. 5.00
9 PERFECT LOVE *** Solid effort on debut behind SUPER JUNIOR. Well drawn and should give a good sight. 12
10 THRUST * Pacifiers on, disappointed at two starts to date. 33
11 EXCUSEZ MOI * Showed some speed at first start and should improve for the effort. 20
Selections; 2 TEXAN TAKEOVER – 1 PERWIRA – 6 KINGTRAP – 8 ALPHA DYNAMIC
The usual open Class 4 offers up a race with a host of chances where early track position will play a major part. TEXAN TAKEOVER was a late veterinary scratching last start after showing sound trial form. Owned by Mummify stable and from the Michael Freedman stable to be ridden by Joao Moreira, the two time winner from five Australian starts looks certain to run a bold first-up race. His racing pattern in Australia was to lead and the challenge will be to get him across and settled. Brian Dean has the extremely consistent PERWIRA – a horse who has not finished further back than fourth in his last six starts – all in similar affairs to this. KINGTRAP is a tough old veteran who won over this journey three starts back; with Barend Vorster to ride he can be expected to be thereabouts again. The winkers have been upgraded to blinkers on BABY FACE who has been competitive without winning since annexing his maiden in March; from the ace draw with regular rider Anandan on top he should be right in the mix. ALPHA DYNAMIC put in a good performance at his first start for Theo Keiser, he is well drawn again and Alan Munro takes over from KB Soo – he should be on the pace all the way. DOUBLE S ran a great race over 1200m last start and back to a more suitable 1100m with Greg Cheyne retaining the mount, he should run on strongly for the in-form Sam Chua stable. FAT KING likes it longer but is down in Class and could make his presence felt particularly if there is heaps of early speed, a similar comment could be made for the other Brian Dean runner PHANTOM KNIGHT.
1 PERWIRA *** Extremely consistent horse, always hard to beat this class, distance and surface. 4.00
2 TEXAN TAKEOVER *** Won at Geelong and Donald from five starts in Australia, has trialed well, speedy and with Moreira steering should be hard to beat. 3.00
3 FAT KING ** Would probably like it longer but can lead and a bold run would not surprise. 20
4 NEW BEGINNING ** Trialed well recently. Was beaten a long way, but ran on at first run back from a spell. Has had numerous health issues but can race well on his day. 20
5 PHANTOM KNIGHT * Long time since he has won and prefer over longer but will be running on late. 20
6 KINGTRAP *** Veteran who runs well in these races. Won a similar race three starts back and should be thereabouts with Barend Vorster to ride. 7.00
7 ZAC COERCION * Resuming after very long break – goes well on his day but market only guide. 33
8 ALPHA DYNAMIC *** Good effort from wide gate last start. Strong chance with better draw and Alan Munro up. 7.00
9 DOUBLE S ** Nice effort last start, suited by 1100m, has a sharp finishing burst which could be used to advantage here. 12
10 BABY FACE ** Trialed well recently. Winkers upgraded to blinkers, consistent type who should race well from good draw. 12
11 SUPER STRIKE * Has been well beaten last few starts and may be looking for something easier. 25
12 SAVILHRO * Won in Class 5 two starts back and may be better suited there. 25
Selections; 3 OASIS SPUR – 6 COURT MAGICIAN – 4 TOMORROWS DREAMS – 9 MR KNOW IT ALL
A Restricted Maiden where the revealed form does not set the pulse racing. The most interesting runner is the Pat Shaw trained, Fred Crabbia owned COURT MAGICIAN who is a half brother to a handy West Australian mare called Magic Eight and is by Viscount sire of ROCKET MAN. Having won a trial and to be ridden by Saimee Jumaat, he could be the one to watch. The blinkers and Joao Moreira go on the Brian Dean runner TOMORROWS DREAM, a clear indication that he is expected to run up to his good recent form. OASIS SPUR has also put in two good recent efforts on the Polytrack and from his good alley should be expected to run well. MR KNOW IT ALL ran a good even race last start and Alan Munro can be expected to give him a good ride. This is a race where a number of those which have only had one or two starts could show sharp improvement and horses such as CHINA ROULETTE, THEOLOGY and PURE GOLD fall into that category.
1 BLUE LAGOON * Has not shown up in four starts and probably wants it longer. 100
2 THEOLOGY ** Missed the kick last start, previous effort was good and if he gets away could show up. 14
3 OASIS SPUR *** Good run last start and has shown promise previously. One of the main hopes. 4.00
4 TOMORROWS DREAMS *** Winkers upgraded to blinkers, Moreira goes on, well drawn, caught wide last start and ran on well, in the mix. 3.00
5 CHINA ROULETTE * Wide throughout last start though beaten a long way, could be on the improve. 33
6 COURT MAGICIAN *** Trialed nicely recently. Well bred gelding by Viscount, half brother to multiple winner Magic Eight. From strong stable and should race well first-up. 3.00
7 HOST THE NATION * Back from a mile on the grass. May be better suited here but prefer to see. 100
8 LITTLE GIANT * Shown nothing so far. 100
9 MR KNOW IT ALL *** Nice effort at second start and look for further improvement with Alan Munro to ride. 10
10 PURE GOLD * First two efforts have been ordinary but may improve with Stephen Baster to steer. 100
11 THE SUNBELT * No. 200
Selections; 3 GETREEL – 1 CASH DOT COM – 4 SELIGI – 9 KINGRACER
An open Kranji Stakes C over 1200m sees the return of Tengku Rehaizat on CASH DOT COM for his master Desmond Koh, and no doubt he will be looking to return on a winning note via this very consistent galloper. The HUSSONET 5YO has won twice and not missed a place at his past five starts – all on the Polytrack at this distance – and with the claim his weight drops to 56.5kg and this has him well in at the conditions. Trying to spoil the party will be Joao Moreira who takes over from Jacky Low on SELIGI whose two runs since resuming from a lay-off have been excellent. But a horse that could upset them both is GETREEL. The enigmatic galloper has shown more than enough at his last couple – with a query over the ride at his last start – and a win here would not surprise. KINGRACER was heavily supported on debut and could only manage second, Alan Munro takes over from the suspended John Powell, and the former Argentinean galloper could be better suited by the Polytrack. JET ACE is a nice type working his way through the classes and Barend Vorster should have him on the speed most of the way. YOYO is a speedy customer who can be hard to catch, and that may indeed be the case from the ace draw. BENJI’S EMPIRE is a solid performer and whilst this race does not look ideal for he show up without surprising.
1 CASH DOT COM *** Extremely consistent horse who loves this trip and surface, 3kg claim brings him in with a very strong chance. 3.70
2 BENJI’S EMPIRE ** Found the company too strong last start but previous form was good and always a chance in this type of race. 12
3 GETREEL *** Hard to catch and hoop questioned last start but if things go right he has a strong burst and can be tough to beat. 12
4 SELIGI *** Two starts since resuming have been excellent and with Moreira to ride is the testing material. 4.00
5 VELLFIRE * Speedy, but form is poor. 33
6 TOTARA * Has shown nothing in two runs back from a spell. 33
7 YOYO ** Has plenty of speed and gate 1 an advantage. Could run a very cheeky race. 12
8 JET ACE *** Promising horse working his way through the classes. Good win last start and should be competitive again. 6.00
9 KINGRACER *** Former Argentinean who won in good company there. Well supported and narrowly beaten at only Singapore start; should be fitter and gets chance to make amends. 4.50
10 PERFECT TIME * Tongue tie on, handy type but has struggled since maiden win and may need something easier. 33
11 FUKU’S PET * Honest performer but better in lower class. 33
12 GUERRERO * Not suited in this with winkers off – reassess Class 5. 50
Selections; 4 SKY STORM – 1 BLUEBERRY POWER – 3 HAPPY ENDING – 6 MIDLIFE CRISIS
A division two Class 5 affair is tough at the best of times but when two of our top three picks have struggled to get within six or so lengths of the winner of late, we are clutching at straws. To make matter worse our on-top selection, SKY STORM, could start close to even money and it might be a look-on race for punters. But you could make excuses for a disappointing run with support for SKY STORM last start when blinkers went back on and certainly worth another look first up after a spell. Likewise HAPPY ENDING has no form but could appreciate a nice gate and the experienced Greg Cheyne. But the 7YO is running out of chances and while more than capable on his day, he certainly is a risk. Splitting the two is the 9YO mare, BLUEBERRY POWER, who at least brings some form into this race courtesy of a close-up finish doing it tough at her last start. She certainly goes close on a repeat of that effort and MIDLIFE CRISIS had nice form prior to his disappointing effort last time out bit worth another look in this weak field. Ugly race so play with care.
1 BLUEBERRY POWER *** Narrowly went down last start in similar affair after doing it tough and right in this. 3.50
2 NEW LEASE OF LIFE *** Late Hearty Master. Resuming after very long break and while best form over longer it will pay to watch tote first up. 12
3 HAPPY ENDING *** Form shocking but would win this on his day and experienced hoop could make a difference in what looks a weak field. 20
4 SKY STORM *** Resuming after being disappointing with heavy support last start but the race suits and worth another chance. 2.50
5 SPECTA DILEMMA ** Usually thereabouts, appreciates first run back and worth some thought in exotics. 12
6 MIDLIFE CRISIS *** Disappointing last start not to get involved late but previous form has him playing apart in this with Santana a good jockey move. 8.00
7 CONQUEROR ** Looked to have every chance from nice gates with support last couple and have to take on trust today. 10
8 SINATRA * Needs to show more. 50
9 SMARTY SMARTY * Good effort two starts back but drop to this distance a risk and happy to watch. 20
10 CHIEF FIRE THUNDER ** Resuming after a coupe of solid efforts – watch tote and worth a look in exotics. 12
11 THAT’S MONEY * Hard to have. 50
Selections; 6 DUJARDIN – 7 FREEZEMASTER – 5 SUPER GURU – 3 SAKIMA
A very solid field assembled for this ‘Mini-feature’ and plenty of chances with value to be found on a few genuine hopes. In saying that, DUJARDIN looks hardest to beat but with Joao Moreira on top and good form to his name, he will be short. But with two nice Polytrack wins prior to his solid showing in the Derby, DUJARDIN looks perfectly placed with 52.5kg and can win. FREEZEMASTER is a horse to follow though and is likely to come under plenty of punter attention. There was enough to like about his tough run in good company last time out to think he can show his best here for the in-form Stephen Baster and a big run would not surprise. We should be getting value for some of the others and a long look on the day for the likes of SUPER GURU, MAURICE UTRILLO, LIGHTNING THIEF, and STEADFAST WARRIOR is warranted with the former Malaysian galloper, SAKIMA, the improver at long-odds.
1 KEEP AWAY * Form OK but this race looks tough and query on the surface. 33
2 MARTIAL ART * Needs to show something this campaign before we seriously consider. 33
3 SAKIMA ** Hasn’t been disgraced two start in Singapore and look for improvement over suitable trip with winkers added – big value. 50
4 MAURICE UTRILLO ** Form OK but looks suited at the race conditions and enjoys the surface so worth some thought with gate one a bonus. 12
5 SUPER GURU *** Never really involved last start but in well here at the conditions, goes well on the Poly and a big run would not surprise. 8.00
6 DUJARDIN *** First up after solid Derby run and undefeated at two Poly starts prior to that – the one to beat. 2.20
7 FREEZEMASTER *** Certainly not disgraced last in nice company start and won only time on this surface – right in this. 3.00
8 STEADFAST WARRIOR ** In super form and while this is tougher it will pay to respect. 7.00
9 LIGHTNING THIEF ** Excuses not to finish closer in the Derby and nothing wrong with form prior including some great Poly form – watch at value. 12
Selections; 2 TORNADO WIN – 9 REAL GOODMAN – 1 SHOPPING LIST – 7 INCREDIBLE HULK
TORNADO WIN has been in excellent Poly form of late and when you consider he has had excuses for a couple of those efforts and won two of his last four on this surface he is the one to beat. He has drawn wide but Joao Moreira enjoys this type of race and he should get every possible chance and a strong winning hope. REAL GOODMAN looks a major threat after showing last start over 1600m that he can break his maiden status sooner than later in this grade. He may be value as well and pay to follow. A few others are in this race with winning hopes with SHOPPING LIST getting close and INCREDIBLE HULK due and only needs a race to suit his barn-storming style to win. Throw in TOP SHOOTER and KNIGHT’S PARADISE into the mix.
1 SHOPPING LIST *** Looks due to knock in a win this type of race with gate two in his favour – goes close. 6.00
2 TORNADO WIN *** Excuses last start with apprentice rider and won two from previous three this surface with senior hoops so looks the one to beat. 3.50
3 MUSASHI MAMBO ** Thereabouts as a rule and will be more than competitive in Class 5 – can follow. 7.50
4 GOLDEN FRIENDS ** Form reads badly but appreciates run back and this trip suits so should improve. 20
5 TOP SHOOTER *** Good effort last start and in the mix again here. 8.00
6 FORTUNE EIGHT * Hard to have on form since win four starts back. 33
7 INCREDIBLE HULK *** Wide gate not an issue as will get back and motor home – due. 4.00
8 KNIGHT’S PARADISE *** Thereabouts without being a threat at three starts since winning and changing stables but worth an each-way look. 20
9 REAL GOODMAN *** Excuses last start not to finish closer and pay to follow. 10
10 DADDY COOL ** Disappointing last start and drawn badly here but previous form sound and can include in exotics. 33
11 DRUMSARA ** Poly run three back OK and appreciates gate one – keep safe. 20
12 SANTISIMA TRINIDAD ** Not the worst but probably needs to find a yard or two before we seriously consider. 33
13 TAKE THE FIFTH *** Recent form good and has to be included somewhere if he gets a start. 10
14 OIL BARON ** Drawn wide but recent form solid. 20
Selections; 9 SUPER KENNY – 8 PITSTOP – 11 SUPER JUNIOR – 5 HOT GOLD
This is a terrific race and with all due respect to a few solid older horses, this race belongs to the 3YO’s and a clean-sweep by the youngsters is on the cards. Apart from being very well placed at the race conditions, the likes of PITSTOP, SUPER KENNY and SUPER JUNIOR look like horses that will go through the grades and will all get support in this Novice event. Of the three mentioned, SUPER KENNY looked the most impressive winning by over 9 lengths on debut before leading them up in the Juvenile Championship a week later. That run was good considering the quality field he had chasing him on the back-up and a big win here would not surprise. But PITSTOP would have lost few friends in that same race and can also bounce back in what is a suitable affair today. The Golden Horseshoe winner has drawn awkwardly in 8 but Stephen Baster should ride a very patient race on what is a very promising horse and a win would not surprise. SUPER JUNIOR probably didn’t win as convincingly as a 1-20 favourite should but win he did and pay to keep safe with HOT GOLD the other to watch first up after a short spell. Great race and the winner will earn his keep.
1 GOLDEN DOMINATOR * Back in trip a concern and giving weight to some smart 3YOs so will find this tough. 50
2 BOSS CAN I CAN * Struggling. 100
3 MARATHON LAD * OK on his day and claim certainly helps at the conditions. 50
4 THE CARDINAL * Form OK but not in well at the weights and blinkers off so wait for Class 5. 100
5 HOT GOLD *** Smart type resuming and in well enough as a Northern Hemisphere 3YO at the conditions to consider. 6.00
6 DRAGON * Form OK but back in trip and just fair at the weights. 50
7 STARLITE SHOWER * Solid but not in well at the conditions and reassess Class 5. 100
8 PITSTOP *** Excuses not to finish closer in the Juvenile Championship and best in at the weights in this – can win. 3.50
9 SUPER KENNY *** Led them up in the Juvenile Championship as favourite and certainly not disgraced to be overhauled late – can make amends in this. 3.00
10 FLAG OF COMMAND ** Compounded in the Juvenile but did it tough on pace and happy to think he shows more here. 33
11 SUPER JUNIOR *** Won at the shortest quote possible last start and while the win wasn’t as commanding as it should have been for the price, he is a horse to follow. 2.60
Selections; 1 EMERALD HILL – 5 BRING MORE MONEY – 7 TROPICAL FOREST – 6 RUSH
EMERALD HILL has won three from three in Singapore – all on the Poly and all as odds-on fave – and no reason to think that trend doesn’t continue. This Kranji Stakes C field is solid but EMERALD HILL has been too impressive not to think the US-bred 4YO starts odds-on again and just wins! BRING MORE MONEY has the unfashionable Danny Chee on-board but his Poly form is good and after having excuses last start not to finish closer, he is worth a look at value. Likewise TROPICAL FORREST goes well on the Polytrack and showed last start he is ready to win a race like this. He did it tough wide on that day and has a 3kg claim so a big run would not surprise. Most others have to improve on recent runs or in the case of BENJI’S RULE, step up after good Class 4 wins, but RUSH has a bit of class about him and worth starting to follow.
1 EMERALD HILL *** Won well with heavy support at three starts in Singapore and can continue on his merry way today. 1.80
2 DAVIDE ** Form starting to read badly but switch back to Poly with blinkers and claim could see an improvement. 20
3 COLLECT THE CASH ** Obviously recent poor form a concern but should be doing better this type of race. 33
4 READY TO STRIKE ** Appreciates first run back from a long spell but might need longer to show his best. 33
5 BRING MORE MONEY ** Last start better than the result and recent trial looked good – keep safe. 12
6 RUSH ** Improved at second run back from a spell and should be ready to show his best. 20
7 TROPICAL FOREST ** Did it tough last start so good effort to place and worth following with 3kg claim a bonus. 8.00
8 BENJI’S RULE ** Won two of his last four and have to respect although wide gate could be an issue. 5.00
9 DYNAMIC DAN ** In solid form and always worth an each-way look his type of race. 20
10 BUKIT ROSE WOOD ** Resuming and might just need to outing and perhaps better suited longer. 33
11 BIG FORTUNE * Needs it easier. 100
12 SUPER JETSET ** Showed last start why he has to be respected and can place here with just 50.5kg. 12
