Lot 142 Lara Yara (Trippi – Ilha Grande)
Two-and-a-half-million. Price of the most expensive yearling at the sale. Consigned by Wilgerbosdrift, she’s a filly out of stakes winner Ilha Grande (by Tiger Ridge out of champion Ilha da Vitoria). The youngster is destined to be trained by Dean Kannemeyer.
In all, three fillies broke the Million Rand barrier. Second highest price was R2 million for Cheveley Stud’s full sister to Victorian Secret, by Captain Al from the unstoppable Mystic Spring family. John Freeman made the winning bid. The trio was completed by a R1.6 million Fort Wood full sister to Gr1 winner Athina, consigned by Wilgerbosdrift. The youngster is destined to eventually join the powerful Varsfontein mare-band.

Lot 166 Pietro Mascagni (Silvano – Jodie)
The highest price, in millions, bid for a yearling colt at Nationals. He’s the second foal of a non-winning Western Winter full sister to champion 2yo Ice Cube, and will be trained by Mike de Kock for Sheikh Hamdan. The youngster was consigned by Varsfontein, which also had the next two highest priced colts. Form Bloodstock went to R2.2 million for a son of Gr2 winning Captain Al mare Townsend, while Alesh Naidoo got a Var colt out of Western Winter’s Gr1 winner Covenant (from the Soho Secret family) for R2 million. That third highest price of R2 million was also achieved by Drakenstein Stud’s Western Winter colt out of Gr1 winning Jet Master mare Stratos.

The number of yearlings that fetched R1 million or more. They included 6x Silvano, 4x Dynasty, and 2x each for Captain Al and and Trippi.
This compared to 23 millionaires in 2015, of which 6 were Silvano’s and 5 were by Dynasty.

The median price, in 000’s, for the 339 yearlings sold at the National Sale. This was made up of a 225k median for colts, and 160k median for fillies, both down on the previous three years. This year 84 yearlings went through the ring without finding a buyer.

Lot 258 Wheel Of Time (Tapit – Pin Turn)
The US$ equivalent of R1 million, paid for the only yearling by US sire Tapit at the sale. That leading US-stallion should have three runners in next weekend’s Kentucky Derby, and currently commands a fee of $350k – five times the about $70k equivalent bid by Form Bloodstock for the first foal of Pivotal mare Pin Turn, a daughter of SA Champion Ipi Tombe. The yearling colt was consigned by Drakenstein Stud.
