‘Contrite’ RA CEO Larry Wainstein

Following weeks of speculation, the RA Board have issued a statement regarding the Champions Day incident in which it is alleged that Larry Wainstein, CEO of the Racing Association, assaulted a member of the public.

The statement, issued on Tuesday, 24 May 2016 reads as follows:-

“On Saturday 30 April 2016, an incident took place at Turffontein Racecourse regarding an alleged assault on a racegoer by the CEO of the Racing Association, Larry Wainstein.

Mr Wainstein immediately reported the incident to the Board of Directors of the Racing Association, and gave his version of events as they had occurred. Mr Wainstein further apologised for any embarrassment that the incident may have caused to the Racing Association. No complaint has been lodged with the Racing Association by the other party concerned or by any Racing Association member.

The Board has investigated the incident, as well as Mr Wainstein’s explanation for his conduct. Whilst the Racing Association does not condone Mr Wainstein’s conduct, the Board is satisfied with the explanation given.

In light of Mr Wainstein’s unequivocal apology, together with the contriteness he has shown, the Board feels that no further sanction is necessary.

In the circumstances, the Board considers this matter closed.

For and on behalf of the Board”
