Picking Purely On Pedigree

Selecting sale yearlings just on paper pedigrees is a hazardous business, but it has its pro’s and cons. You can pick the pedigree without considering the physical appearance, and accept the horse for what it is. After all, the quality of the yearlings on a sale like this is pretty good, as they have had to pass a physical inspection a few months ago. That rules out any major structural faults.
Even so, for most buyers the physical attraction and black type on the catalogue page is everything. As a result, a lot of nit-picking takes places, which really has nothing to do with whether the horse will be able to run or not. This apart from the fact that few prospective owners are able to judge a yearling properly, or able to look through the white lies the catalogue page represents, writes Karel Miedema.

First & Second Season Sires In The Spotlight

A lot of guesswork goes into predicting the possible affinities of a stallion at the time he first goes to stud. That is primarily based on his own pedigree elements and those of his well performed close relatives. Once a stallion has winning runners, the early views can be revisited and revised, based on how those best runners are bred.
Good winners are the key, of course - after all, nine out of every ten new sires won’t make the grade, and the risk of buying their offspring is vastly increased. Which in turn must mean that for most of them their offspring will be more affordable in the grand scheme of things.
For the first and second season sires, whose offspring sells on Saturday night, the evaluations from the Sire Handbook give valuable insight. Time, then, to put my neck on the block. To preserve at least some of my reputation they are listed alphabetically.

Dupont (Zafonic)
Winner of the Italian & German 2000 Guineas and Gr1 placed in the UK, with a 115 Timeform rating. He’s a full brother to Pacino, also German 2000 Guineas winner, and to Zacharia, a Gr2 winner in Japan. Their dam is a daughter of Sadler’s Wells. Dupont’s sire Zafonic also is the sire of Count Dubois.
The filly out of imported mare (52) Estime (Caerleon) is a half sister to a winner by Rakeen. She’s inbred to 3-part brothers The Minstrel and Nijinsky. The family has produced black-type winners in Italy, France & Japan.
Italian stakes winner (15) Rose Wine (Chilibang) has bred multiple winners by Rakeen and Count duBois. The half brother on offer here has an interesting pedigree, doubling Sadler’s Wells and very close genetic relative Final Straw 3x3. Must be one to note.

Dynasty (Fort Wood)
Horse of the Year and Champion Classic 3yo, following three Classic Gr1 wins and a July-victory. Made his debut as a stallion at the recent Vintage Sale (yearlings going for 200k, 100k) and National Sale (475k and 400k the top prices).
(40) Ascot Jewel (Al Mufti) is a winning full sister to a top filly from Al Mufti’s early stud period, Jamaican Justice, who was exported to the US. The mare is represented by a filly, her first foal. Another winning full sister to a top runner is (73) Lady Windsor (Al Mufti), sibling to Gr1 winner Lady Brompton (dam of 2008 Gr1 SA Classic winner Kings Gambit, sold to race abroad). This is that topclass female line of Soho Secret, from which Dynasty’s sire Fort Wood got Gr2 winners Secret Heart and Superwood. On offer is a colt.
Five-time winner (31) Typical (Aristis) is a half sister to 4 other winners, their dam a sister to top sprinter Cavilan. Her yearling colt is her second foal.
The colt out of 6-time winning mare (53) Fancy Ashton (Ashtontown) is a first foal. The mare is a half sister to six other winners.
The female line of Dynasty’s sire Fort Wood carries striking similarities to the one of Badger Land. Which draws attention to the filly out of (9) Proud Petal (Badger Land). She’s half sister to a winner.
Five-time winning Gr3 runner-up (18) Royal Mayfair (Dominion Royale) has a colt, her second foal. The bottom female line is black type English.
Gr3 placed 4-time winner (62) High Sea (Fine Edge) comes from the family of Gr1 winners Big Brass, Fallon and Stella Maris. Her yearling is a colt.
There are common factors in the pedigrees of the damsire of Dynasty, Commodore Blake, and the grandam of multiple winner (63) Highland Dancer (Gay Fandango) – notably lines of Bride Elect and Shantung. The yearling on offer is a half brother to five multiple winners from a variety of sires.
Winning mare (57) Forefront (Pole Position) is a half sister to highclass Sectional Title, from a fast female line. Her grey colt is a half brother to two winners.
(19) Saint Isidore (Rakeen) is a half sister to a stakes winner, their dam Gr1 winner Saintly Lady. On offer is colt, her second foal.
The home country of Chilean mare (48) Cosima Liszt also is the origin of her sire Rich Man’s Gold. Even so, the mare has a strong Argentinian black type family background. Her yearling colt is a first foal. So is the yearling out of 4-time winner (55) First World (Sportsworld). The youngster combines Sadler’s Wells with 3-part brother Nureyev in his pedigree. Exactly the same goes for the colt out of (61) High On Life (Zabeel), a winning New Zealand bred mare from a solid black type family. The youngster is half brother to a winner.
Winning mare (64) Hockey Corner (Sportsworld) is a half sister to the dam of champion 3yo and recent Dubai winner Jay Peg, from the same female line as top-mare Let Kiss. Her colt is a third foal, and half brother to a winner.

Medaaly (Highest Honor)
Gr1 wnnr as a 2yo in UK, rated 114. Started his career in Fr where he was the leading freshman. His dam is a full sister to Fort Wood. Stood for 4 seasons in SAf and was recently exported again, to Ireland. His first SAf crop are 2yo’s.
US-winner (5) Porizkova (Polish Navy) comes from the same bottom female line as Medaaly, the pair doubling up on the mare Portage. The yearling colt on offer is a half brother to 6 winners in the US, incl a stakes winning filly.
(14) Rioter (Elliodor), winning daughter of Gr1 winner Smart As Paint, is half sister to 2 SWs and to 3 dams of stakes performers. Her grey yearling colt is a half brother to 2 winners.
Gr3 pl (24) Star Magnolia (Golden Thatch) is half sister to champion race filly Star Effort. She is dam of 3 wnnrs from different sires and comes with a grey half brother to those.
(8) Princess Gold (Goldmark) comes from the female line of champion sprint filly Sunera and Gr2 wnnr Something Else. The yearling filly on offer is her 2nd foal.

Modus Vivendi (Zafonic)
This French miler comes from one of the world’s foremost sire-producing female lines.
Interestingly, the colt out of 2-time winner (7) Pretty Ruler (Northern Guest) is inbred to that very female line – 3x4, through the mare Best In Show. The mare herself is a daughter of Gr3 runner-up Pretty Sharp.

Nysaean (Sadler’s Wells)
Gr1 pl Gr3 winning son of Sadler’s Wells, bred on the celebrated cross of his sire with mares by Irish River. His first crop of yearlings offered earlier this year achieved prices of 300k, 170k and 120k.
The filly out of multiple winner (10) Queen Duleen (Caesour) combines Sadler’s Wells with 3-part brother Nureyev 2x3, an interesting double.
Imported US-bred (65) Hope Jo’anna (Chimes Band) made her mark with her 1st foal, Gr3 pl SW Hope And Fortune. On offer a half bro to that colt.
The filly out of (68) Infra-Red (Elliodor) is her dam’s 3rd foal. The mare is a daughter of stakes placed Titian Gold, half sister to Gr1 winner (and sire) National Emblem. The pedigree carries a double of siblings Special & Thatch.
Jallad’s pedigree might be well suited to Nysaean, which draws attention to the filly out of (37) Aloha (Jallad), a second foal. The dam is full sister to stakes placed Top Slot, from an Argentinian female line.
(71) Kinski (Russian Fox) is a winning half sister to 5 stakes horses, incl Gr1 pl Sharief’s Song. On offer is a filly.

Rabah (Nashwan)
This English Gr3 wnnr (rated 118) started his stud career in Zim, where he was the leading sire in 2007. He had runners in SA, too, notably Cape 2yo Gr3 wnnr Firebolt. This is his first SA bred crop.
The dam of winning mare (41) Attache (Elliodor) has produced five black type runners, incl Toronto Star. The latter is a full sister to Attache, and is the dam of a stakes horse. The yearling colt offered is his dam’s second foal.
Zim Gr3 wnnr (43) Bold Bidder (Goldkeeper: 10r/6w/1sw) has a strong black type background. Her colt is half bro to a winner. The sire x broodmare sire cross has been highly successful in Zim, with Oaks winner Say Alert the leading light.
(4) On The Rocks (Icelander) is a winning half sister to 6 wnnrs, incl topclass Sovereign Seas. Their dam is a sister to Guineas winners Vistula and Muscovy. On offer is a colt.
All 5 rnnrs to date for (50) Dusty Dancer (Jungle Warrior) have been wnnrs, incl stakes placed Dolce Vita. Two of the mare’s half sisters have produced black type winners. Her latest yearling is a colt.
There’s lots going on in the pedigree of the colt out of Gr3 pl 5-time winner (66) Imperial Bird (Nissr: 7r/4w). There’s interaction of Rabah’s grandsire Blushing Groom with maternal grandsire Nijinsky, plus multiples of Buckpasser & Mr Busher. The yearling is a half bro to 3 wnnrs (from 3 rnnrs), one Gr3 pl. Looks very interesting.
Stakes winning mare (75) Living Eyes (Parched) is dam of 3 stakes performers, including highclass Bush Conqueror. On offer a half bro to those.

Requiem (Danehill)
This Aus Gr2 wnnr started his stud career with a bang in 2008. His first 5 rnnrs yielded 2 wnnrs and 2 placed rnnrs, incl 2yo SW Scripture.
One on offer here, the 1st foal of (46) Celeb (Saumarez). The mare is a half sister to 3 stakes performers, from the Party Time female line. Looks a nice mating.

Second Empire (Fairy King)
Champion 2yo and champion miler in Ireland, rated 124. Shuttled between Ireland and Aus at the start of his career, and has stakes horses around the world – incl SA, with Silver Empire. This is his 2nd SA crop. The first 2 rnnrs from his first crop this year have won and placed.
English mare (20) Sight Screen (by Danehill’s full brother Eagle Eyed) is a half sister to multiple Gr1 winning sprntr Continent, from a strong European female line. She has a filly, her second foal.
Stakes placed multiple winner (51) Enchanted Rio (Enchantment) is a half sister to Gr2 pl Gay Dea, the pair daughters of multiple Gr1 pl Gay Rio. The colt on offer is half brother to 3 winners. The mating looks interesting, with a genetic sibling cross of Bold Reason (in Fairy King) and Constant Nymph (in Enchantment).
Multiple winner (69) Ivory Silk (Final Top) has produced three winners to date. On offer a half sister to those.
American mare (30) Torrid Tango (Green Dancer) is dam of a Gr2 winner by Spectrum, and grandam of a Gr3 winner by Zabeel. The mare is herself a 3-part sister to champion 3yo Suave Dancer, with her third dam a half sister to Northfields and Habitat. That gives her current yearling filly distinct paddock potential.
The filly out of Gr3 pl 5-time winner (22) Sovereign Lace (Last Tycoon) combines genetic relatives Bold Reason and Mill Reef. The youngster is a third foal, and half sister to a wnnr. The bottom female line is black-type NZ. Also NZ bred is stakes placed 3-time winner (72) Lady Maroof (Maroof), who is a half sister to Gr1 placed Gr2 winner Winning Belle. The yearling colt offered is her third foal. Interesting mating, as the mare’s pedigree elements may suit the sire.
There’s a close genetic relationship between Second Empire’s grandam and Elliodor, the latter grandsire of stakes placed 4-time winner (3) Nobel Perfection (Model Man). So far, all four runners from the mare are multiple winners. On offer is a half sister. Looks interesting. The same goes for another filly out of a winning Model Man mare, (39) Angelfish (Model Man). The dam is a half sister to five other winners from a good family.
(25) Sucha Dancer (Northern Guest) never raced, but has produced 10 wnnrs at stud, two of them stakes winning stayers. They have a half bro here.
Irish mare (17) Royal Fanfare (Persian Bold) is a winning half sis to 2 stakes wnnrs and to 3 dams of black type rnnrs. The grandam is a full sis to champion race filly Dahlia who has 4 sire-sons at stud. The yearling filly offered is a half sis to a winner in Aus.
The colt out of US-bred mare (16) Rossellini (Spinning World) combines three-part brothers Fairy King and Nureyev 2x3, a variation on the theme of Sadler’s Wells with Nureyev. The mare is half sister to an 8-time wnnr, their dam a half sister to Gr1 winner Among Men, who stood in SA. The yearling is his dam’s first foal.

Spectrum (Rainbow Quest)
Gr1 winner and sire of Gr1 winners of both sexes world-wide. His first South African crop generated offers of R1.6 and R1.3 million at the recent National Sale.
One on offer at this sale, a colt out of (28) Sweet Lark Sing (West Man). Half brother to a winner, the youngster is inbred 3x3 to Irish River and very close genetic relative Belka (grandam of West Man). The mare is a half sister to champion 2yo Forward Filly, from a strong family.

Tamburlaine (Royal Academy)
A winner and three placed runners from his first 4 rnnrs suggest a rosy future for the English Guineas runner-up, who rated TFR119. There was continued support for his yearlings at recent sales, with prices of 550k, 475k, 450k.
Tamburlaine’s sire Royal Academy has two lines of genetic relatives that fit in with Buckpasser, damsire of Al Mufti. That draws attention to the colt out of 2-time winner (76) Mayfair Set (Al Mufti). The youngster is her second foal, the female line is English.
Three-time winner (6) Portal (Damascus Gate) has her first foal, a colt. This is the potent Let Kiss family.
Royal Academy and Dancing Champ are both sons of Nijinsky, and share female line elements as well, which might bring out the best in the colt out of (44) Bolshoi (London News). The mare’s grandam is Fillies Guineas winner In Camera.
The yearling filly out of 3-time winner (1) Nino’s Dancer (Mistral Dancer) will be first through the ring at Grand West. The mare is a full sister to Gr1 placed Nino’s Mistral, her yearling half sister to a winner.
Gr2 placed 5-time winner (12) Regal Guest (Royal Chalice) has bred six winners to date, including Gr1 placed Hundredpercent. The mare comes from an American female line, which adds weight to the duplications in her yearling’s pedigree of Bold Bidder, Bold Hour and Plum Bold. This colt must be one to note.
Four-time wnnr (42) Ballinderry (Royal Prerogative) has produced 7 wnnrs, incl Gr3 wnnr Dunmore West and the dam of Gr2 wnnr Royal Vintage. On offer is a half sister with clear paddock potential.

Toreador (Danehill)
All eyes are on this sprint/miler son of Danehill to see how he carries the torch for his famous sire. Buyers showed confidence, forking out up to 300k at the recent Vintage and National Sale.
(60) Happy Family (Complete Warrior) is winning half sister to Gr1 winner Fluent Stride and two other stakes winners. Her yearling is a half brother to 2 winners.
(49) Dancing Elli (Elliodor) has a filly, her first foal. The mare is a half sister to Gr1 runner-up Fort Danzig, their dam dual champion filly Dancing Danzig. The mare is inbred 2x4 to full siblings Ellida and Busted, which makes for a promising match with Toreador. Could be interesting.
(36) Yew Wood (Fort Wood) is a half sister to Gr2 placed 7-time winner Big Sky Country, their dam Queen’s Right an apparently good match (in terms of pedigree elements) for Toreador. That draws attention to the yearling filly offered, half sister to a winner.
The two runners o date for two-time winner (70) Killaney Road (Northern Guest) are both winners, by Lavery and Martinelli. She has a half bro to those.
Stakes placed 6-time wnnr (2) No Problem (Rakeen) is a half sis to 6 wnnrs, 2 of them dams of good winners. The mare has a yearling filly.
Stakes placed multiple wnnr (29) Token Power (Token Of Youth) is half sis to Cape Guineas runner-up King Kama, from a solid female line. Her yearling is a colt.
NZ bred (59) Franki Fourfingers (Volksraad) has all the elements Toreador should like, both from her sire and from her dam. The yearling colt offered is half brother to Gr3 runner-up Bennie Andthe Jets, the mare’s only previous runner.
In theory the combination of Toreador with mares by Western Winter looks special. That draws attention to the colt out of (11) Queen’s Service (Western Winter), the mare a half sister to Gr1 winning 2yo Manipur. The youngster is her first foal.

Var (Forest Wildcat)
R500k, 600k, 850k – that’s how far buyers were prepared to go at the 2008 National Sale for the first progeny of this European champion sprinter (rated 124 by Timeform). He should be popular again, here, too.
From the Lily-family comes 2-time winner (38) Amazon Lily (Complete Warrior), half sister to top sprint filly Geordoba. She has a colt who doubles Bold Lad (and has more of his sire Bold Ruler). On paper a suitable mating.
Three-time winner (23) Star Lisa (Elliodor) is a 3-part sister to Lisa’s Pride, dam of four stakes performers. The mare has produced two multiple winners by Fine Edge and comes with a half brother to the pair.
Nureyev and 3-part brother Sadler’s Wells combine every time Var gets a Fort Wood mare. There are two so bred here. (34) Welsh Fortress (Fort Wood), unraced full sister to Hold The Fort and half sister to Gay Regina, has a colt, her first foal. Twice-winning (58) Fort d’Or (Fort Wood) comes with a filly, whose grandam is by Riverman, adding more fuel to the Sadler’s Wells/Nureyev fire.
Unraced (45) Bushgirl (Huntingdale) is a daughter of champion racemare Devon Air, which makes her a half sister to Cream of the Crop (dam of recent Gr1 winner She’s On Fire). She comes with a colt, her second foal.
(77) Misty Heights (Jallad) has bred 3 wnnrs from as many rnnrs. The mare's a 2-time winning half sister to 2 stakes horses, from the Honey-family. On offer a filly.
(67) Inanda House (Krusenstern) is a winning half sister to three Gr1 winners, from the female line of sisters Tecla & Taima Bluff. The mare has had one previous runner, a winner, and comes with a colt.

Victory Moon (Al Mufti)
Multiple graded stakes winner with impressive international form, rated 120 by Timeform. Got the tongues wagging at the National Sale, with prices of 600k, 400k, 325k. His sire Al Mufti has a strong Buckpasser affinity, and Victory Moon is bred on that affinity through his damsire Dancing Champ. Could it be that Victory Moon will thrive on the same elements?
The two previous foals of winning mare (54) Fiery Contest (All Fired Up) are both winners. The second dam is a black type producing 3-part sister to champion Model Man. On offer a filly.
Winning mare (47) Cherry Lane (Crystal De Roche) is a half sister to three mares with black type flowing from them, and comes from the female line of Gr1 winners Polo Classic, Face North and Quarrytown. Her yearling is half brother to three winners, all the mare’s runners to date.
(26) Sunshine (Hard Up) is a winning half sister to nine other winners, which include Gr2 winner Knife Edge, from a New Zealand female line. The yearling filly on show is her dam’s first foal.
(21) Silver Nymph (Kilconnel) has an English family background, and is the dam of a 3-time winner by Lecture. She comes with a grey half brother to that one.
Five-time winner (74) Lekker Rebecca (Mistral Dancer) comes from the highclass Miss Forsyte female line. She’s a half sister to six other winners, two of them dams of winners. Her colt is a second foal.
Imported English mare (13) Rehaab (Mtoto) has a mainly American family background. She's the dam of a wnnr (her 1st foal) and has a filly here, her 3rd foal.
Four-time wnnr (32) United Frontier (National Emblem) comes from a French female line with several Gr1 performing representatives in SA. She has a colt, her first foal.
Buckpasser is the damsire of Northern Guest, which draws attention to 2 of his daughters with yearlings here. (33) Vicario (Northern Guest) is the dam of 4 wnnrs from different sires. More interestingly, her dam Wild Hyacinth is the grandam of Victory Moon, giving inbreeding to that mare 3x2 in the colt on offer. The grey yearling colt out of (56) Floreal (Northern Guest) is half brother to six winners, incl Gr2 wnnr Boston Blues. The dam is half sister to the dam of Gr1 wnnr Fallon, from a solid female line.
(27) Sweet Annie (Shaamit) is inbred to half bro Habitat and Northfields. She’s a half sis to Gr1 pl Gr3 winner Hello Margarita. On offer a filly, her 3rd foal.
Two-time wnnr (35) West She Flew (Western Winter) is a 3-part sister to Gr1 winner Roxanne. She has a colt here, her first foal.

Day Two - Established Sires

Al Mufti (Roberto)
At the recent National Sale they paid up to R1.6 million for progeny of this successful sire & broodmare sire of Gr1 winners.
There’s only one here, and this yearling colt out of (189) Charcoal (Fort Wood: 18r/12w/3sw) might well be the proverbial big fish in a small pond at this sale. His dam is a full sister to stakes winner Sepia.

Alado (Danzig)
This freshman mysteriously didn’t make into the ‘new sire’ grouping and here must compete against older sires from the start. Alado is an unraced son of Danzig, while his dam is a multiple Gr1 winner in England, rated 122.
Just one on offer, a colt out of 3-time winning mare (170) Antiqua (Jungle Warrior). The yearling is half bro to a winner.

Almushtarak (Fairy King)
International Gr1 performer, and sire of stakes winner Miller Time from his first SA crop. Miller’s dam is by Centenary, which fits Almushtarak’s predicted affinity with Prince John (Princequillo & Nasrullah).
Unraced (145) Themeda (Elliodor: 2r/0w) is a full sister to 2 multiple winners out of stakes winner Grass Dancer, from a black type family. The colt offered is her 1st foal.
The filly out of (211) Empress Bay (Enchantment: 1r/0w) doubles Never Bend and has the Sir Ivor & Habitat genetic sibling duo, all of which makes the dam of Almushtarak a close genetic relative of the mare’s sire Enchantment. The youngster is her dam’s second foal.
(139) Sunburst (Fair Season) is a half sister to Horse of the Year Prince Florimund and five other winners. Her yearling colt is her second foal.
The dam of Almushtarak and the dam of (100) Prophetic (Jallad: 1r/0w) and her full sister (284) Magic Miracle (Jallad: 1r/0w) have a lot in common and can be called genetic siblings. That makes for a 2x2 double in the two sisters’ yearling colts on offer. The mares are half sisters to Oracle West, who was rated 122 by Timeform in Dubai last year, and to Gr3 pl What A Prophet. It’ll be interesting to see how the two offspring of the sisters compare physically.
Three-time winner (198) Crystal League (Jungle Warrior: 1r/0w) comes with a colt, her third foal. The mare’s dam is a half sister to Gr1 winner Spanish Pool, from a strong black type English family.
(158) Vintage Green (Model Man: 1r/0w) is a winning half sister to Gr1 sprinter Young Harvest and to two dams of winners. Her yearling colt is a first foal.
There’s lots to like about the filly out of 3-time winner (173) Bahama Coral (Model Man: 1r/0w). The mare is a full sister to the dam of 2008 Cape Guineas winner Pointing North. The latter’s pedigree carried Alleged & Riverman, this yearling has Riverman and genetic relatives Mill Reef & Bold Reason. A strong and current family to boot, so very much one to note.
The yearling colt out of (202) Dappled Light (Our Casey’s Boy) is a half bro to 2 multiple wnnrs, incl SW of 7 races Gunpowder ‘n Grit. This is a highclass speed female line.
(82) Oakington (Shoe Danzig: 1r/0w), winning half sister to Gr1 winner & sire The Rutland Arms, comes with a colt, half brother to a winner.

Asaal (Machiavellian)
Speed sire, whose dam is by Nureyev and who comes from a strong black-type female line.
Three on offer here. (248) Hauntingly (Freedom Land) is a half sister to the dam of champion sprinter Hinterland, the next dam a half sister to champion Foveros. Her yearling is a filly.
(99) Privy’s Last (National Assembly: 1r/0w) has an American family background and is a half sister to a stakes winner of 17 races in USA and four local winners. Her yearling filly is a first foal.
Three-time winner (123) Siberian Angel (Russian Fox: 1r/1w) has had two winners to date, both multiple winners, and comes with a half sister to those. The mare’s dam is a half sister to champion stayer Aquanaut.

Badger’s Drift (Badger Land)
This multiple Gr1 winner was South Africa’s leading freshman sire last year, with 2yo Gr3 winner Ivory Trail setting the pace. The sire is a half bro to 5 highclass stakes performers, their grandam a 3-part sister to major sire Blushing Groom and their dam inbred 3x2 to genetic equivalents Thong and Red God.
Unraced mare (194) Copper Kettle (Cordoba) is a half sis to Gr1 performer Steiger and Gr3 pl Ice Warrior, from a useful female line. Her yearling colt is a 2nd foal.
All 3 rnnrs to date for (269) Lady Dolpour (Dolpour) are winners, the mare herself a half sister to Gr1 winner Nobely Born. She comes with a colt, whose pedigree shows a double of full brothers Thatching and Golden Thatch, as well as Sadler’s Wells, who comes from the same background (his grandam Thong matches Red God). Looks interesting.
(187) Catchelli (Elliodor: 1r/0w) is a Gr3 placed 5-time winning daughter of stakes winner Catchpenny. She’s represented by a filly, who is her dam’s third foal after two (as yet) unraced colts by Badger’s Gift.
(119) Self-Scented (Jallad: 4r/0w) is an unraced half sister to four stakes performers, notably Gr1 placed Gr2 winner Black Skimmer. The mare is by Jallad, whose sire Blushing Groom connects with Badger’s Gift’s grandam Abriyna. One to note. The same goes for the colt out of (264) Jallad’s Guest (Jallad: 4r/0w), the mare a half sister to Gr1 sprinter Runaway Brave, from a speed family. The youngster is a first foal.
Stakes placed 5-time winner (153) Veneska (Pitador) is represented by a filly, half sister to a winner.
The three runners to date for 2-time winning mare (107) Rappakeen (Rakeen) are all winners, from different sires. They have a half sister here.
The only previous foal of 2-time winner (175) Ballerina (Rambo Dancer: 1r/1w) is a winning full sister to the yearling filly on offer. The mare is a half sister to stakes winner Choreographer, from the potent Sister Sublime female line.
Blushing Groom pops up again, in the pedigree of 2-time winning Irish mare (214) Exzieting (Zieten). The mare’s dam is by Coquelin, son of Blushing Groom. On offer a filly, half sister to a winner.

Caesour (Nureyev)
Remarkable value-for-money sire of Gr1 winners of both sexes, local and internationally. Where will the next one come from?
The filly out of Gr2 winner (268) Lady Celeste (Amour De Fleuve: 5r/3w) is a full sister to 3 winners, including Gr3 pl 4-timer Roman Empress.
Champion race filly (155) Vesta (Best By Test: 1r/0w) has bred 4 winners to date, from a variety of sires. She has a half sister to those here.
There are interesting pedigree links between Caesour’s dam and Oligarchy, the latter the damsire of (196) Crisp Corn (Condorcet). The mare has produced 7 winners to date, including stakes winner Miss Doreet, from a variety of sires. On offer a half sister to those.
(95) Pretty Lisa (Elliodor: 8r/7w/1sw) is 3-part sister to Lisa’s Pride, who is dam of four stakes horses. The pair come from a topclass Gr1 female line. The yearling filly is a half sister to 2 winners, the sire x broodmare cross a successful one.
The filly out of (227) Fizzy (Fair Season: 4r/3w) is a half sister to 2 winners including I’m Like Hello (now the dam of a runaway 2yo winner first time out, in April). The mare herself is half sister to 2yo Gr1 winner Jumpupandkissme.
Nureyev and Sadler’s Wells combine in the pedigree of the filly out of 2-time winner (289) Mosca (Fort Wood: 2r/0w). The mare has five winning siblings, and comes from Gr1 producing female line. Her dam is also represented; she’s unraced mare (81) Oak Fly (Woodman: 1r/0w) who has a yearling filly by Caesour.
There has been only one previous runner for the sire x broodmare sire combo of Caesour & Jallad. The pair should suit each other well and bigger things may be on the cards. That draws attention to the colt out of (266) Karukera (Jallad: 1r/1w), the mare full sister to stakes placed Roman Forum and half sister to Gr2 winner Sabina Park.
The mating of Caesour with (113) Royal Marou (Maroof) looks a sensible one on paper, with matching background pedigree elements. That draws attention to the colt on offer, who is half brother to a winner.
Stakes placed 5-time winner (128) Sister Nation (National Assembly: 2r/1w) is full sister to another black type performer, their dam a half sister to champion filly Star Effort. The yearling filly offered is her dam’s second foal.
(221) Filibuster (National Assembly: 2r/1w) is the dam of three winners from different sires, one a full sister to the yearling filly on offer. The family background is black type Argentinian.

There are many similarities between the pedigrees of Caesour and Peep, who is the dam of 2-time winner (167) African Queen (Raise A Tradition) and her full sister, Gr1 placed Oculist. Peep is by Dancing Champ, who we also know as the damsire of Caesour’s international Gr1 winning daughters. The yearling filly is her dam’s 1st living foal. Another one with Dancing Champ as her damsire is Stakes winning mare (96) Princess Belinda (Royal Chalice: 2r/2w). She is the dam of one winner, full brother to the yearling colt on offer. Another one in this category is the colt out of (231) Foxy Vixen (Russian Fox: 3r/2w), this because Dancing Champ and Russian Fox, both sons of Nijinsky, are not dissimilar in pedigree make-up. The yearling is half brother to seven winners, one with black type.
Stakes placed 7-time winner (193) Colleen (Restructure) is half sister to another black type filly. She’s represented by a colt, bred on the cross of Caesour and Restructure, the pair close genetic relatives. The pedigree of the yearling colt trebles Thatch & full sister Special.

Captain Al (Al Mufti)
This classic Gr1 winner reached the top as a sire as well, witness the most recent Cape Fillies Guineas, won by his daughter Captain’s Lover. The Captain is a very serious sire now, which was reflected in the prices paid at recent yearling sales: R1.8 million, R1.4 million and a round million. Play-time’s over.

Irish mare (78) Nella Fantasia (Giant’s Causeway) ran twice as a 2yo in UK before being shipped to SA. She’s half sister to stakes placed Magic Carpet (TFR 104) from a truly European family. On offer a filly, her 1st foal.
Buckpasser is doubled in the filly out of (130) Snooze U Lose (Jungle Rock). The winning mare has produced 2 multiple wnnrs to date, one stakes placed, from her first three foals.
(212) Evening Standard (London News) is a twice-winning daughter of stakes winner Lady Elect, and is represented here by her second foal, a filly.
(282) Mademoiselle (Model Man: 4r/1w) is a winning half sister to three black type runners and to the dam of another. Her filly is half sister to 2 winners, and inbred 3x3 to Complete Warrior. Interesting mating, given what Complete Warrior contributes in Captain Al’s own pedigree.

Count Dubois (Zafonic)
Here’s a poser: what should you pay for the filly out of (140) Sunny ‘n Fine (Fine Edge: 2r/2w/1sw)? The mare is a winning full sister to Gr2 winner Knife Edge. The sire x broodmare sire combination of Count duBois and Fine Edge is magic – it delivered Gr1 performer State Crown (MR 106) and Count du Luc (MR 93). A little bit of background: the filly’s full brother made 300k as a yearling last year, John Freeman the buyer. Add that all up and this, to be blunt, could be the real thing.
Count duBois yearlings are thin on the ground in 2008. The Gr1 winning miler only has seven registered foals for this crop, of which 3 have been sold so far: 140k at Vintage, and 150k & 230k at Nationals. Two are owned privately and unlikely to come up for sale. That leaves the two at this sale, the second of which is a colt out of (162) Yellow Rose (Hard Up: 4r/4w). Sire x Broodmare sire cross still perfect, and the colt a full brother to multiple winner Frankie de Wheels. The mare is a winning full sister to Gr3 winner of 8 races El Paso, and half sister to another good sprinter, Irkutsk. Pretty good stuff.

Crimson Waves (Bush Telegraph)

This French Gr2 winning miler could well be one of those real lurker sires, ready to surprise everyone.
