Riethuiskraal Dispersal Sale
8 June, Stilbaai, Cape Town

Altus Joubert’s decision to disperse his mare band and weanlings comes as the consequence of a clear business decision on whether to be an armchair breeder or a proper commercial one. Joubert’s career, after all, is in law and not in the field. Having bred international and local Gr1 winners in a breeding career spanning two decades no doubt made the final decision a little easier. How much higher can you fly solo, and at what cost?
For us, mere mortals in the breeding arena, the mare and weanling dispersal presents an opportunity to acquire bloodstock which otherwise might be remain unobtainable. Expense being one reason, simple availability another. So let’s examine this Pandora’s box and dream a little, writes Karel Miedema.

All about Daylami
All mares offered at the Riethuiskraal sale come with a service to Daylami, while a good few are already in foal to the grey Gr1 winning stallion.
It makes sense, therefore, to take a closer look at Daylami’s pedigree make-up, and the look of his best runners overseas. There might be clues.

Daylami is a son of Doyoun, a highclass racer who won the English 2000 Guineas and ran third in the Epsom Derby. Doyoun is by Mill Reef (Never Bend), and at stud has shown an affinity for lines of Never Bend, Riverman, Sir Gaylord/Sir Ivor. The Never Bend scenario involves backgrounds of Djebel/Tourbillon and Count Fleet, leading to a - in theory - potent cross of Mill Reef with Mr Prospector.
Theory came true in the pedigree of Daylami, whose damsire Miswaki is by Mr Prospector out of a Buckpasser mare. It matters in this context that Buckpasser and the grandam of Mr Prospector are close genetic relatives. In a nutshell, the pedigree make-up of Mill Reef and of Miswaki are remarkably similar. Daylami had more to come: his bottom female line throws up the mare Rose Ness, another close genetic relative to Mill Reef.
Following on from this, it would have to be assumed that Daylami’s own affinities follow the established route.
Let’s see.
Grey Swallow is Daylami’s best runner to date (Timeform 129). His dam combines (3x4) close genetic relatives Flaming Page and Mr Busher, both of which are in turn genetic relatives of Buckpasser (from Miswaki).
Highly rated (Timeform 119) Bull Run combines (4x4) Miswaki’s dam Hopespringseternal with genetic relative Red God (through Blushing Groom).
The grandam of Cougar Bay (116, in Ireland) is Mariella, a mare by Sir Gaylord, who gives a 3x3 cross with Mill Reef, the pair being close genetic relatives. In addition, the dam of Cougar Bay is by In The Wings, who has Bold Reason & Mill Reef 3x3.
Centaurus (115, in UK) is clear-cut: inbred 3x4 to Mill Reef.
Miswaki is by Mr P. out of mare by Buckpasser, and so is Woodman. The latter is damsire of Remaadd (112), giving a 3x2 cross. The dam of Remaadd doubles close relatives Buckpasser and Flaming Page 3x4.
And so on.

In summary, it seems that Buckpasser, Flaming Page (Nijinsky, The Minstrel), Red God (Blushing Groom) carry weight. So do Mill Reef (Shirley Heights), Sir Gaylord (Sir Ivor, Habitat), Bold Reason (Sadler’s Wells), and the combination of Buckpasser with Mr P.

Al Mufti
Broodmare sire of Gr1 winners Jay Peg, Divine Jury, O Caesour, Little Miss Magic, Rock Opera and Heir Apparent.
Cape Fillies Guineas third (26) Kal Sufi (14yo; dam by Waterville Lake) has had 3 winners to date, two of them exported to race abroad. The mare is in foal to Daylami, which is interesting as Al Mufti and Daylami's damsire Miswaki have much in common, notably Al Mufti's favourite line: Buckpasser. Must be worth a shot.
The as yet unraced (44) Agapanthus (2yo; dam by Divine King) is ready to go into training. She's a half sister to six winners including multiple stakes winner Staff Officer. This family seems to throw up unfashionably bred highclass runners every generation, suggesting there's more to the female line than meets the eye. The filly's dam is also at the sale, covered by Spectrum. She is stakes winner of six races (43B) Queen Rose (19yo; dam by Sarnia Call) and is the dam of Staff Officer.

Badger Land
Broodmare sire of 2008 classic winners Russian Sage, Captain's Lover & Happy Spirit, and of Gr1 performer Rebel King.
Once-raced mare (15) Empi (8yo; dam by Rainbow Dream) is half sister to Gr1 Garden Province Stakes runner-up Rainbow Flag. Their dam is a stakes placed winner of 5 races, from a Gr1 producing female line. The mare hasn't yet had runners. She's in foal to Daylami.

Caesour
Here's a potent sire x damsire combo for Daylami: it pops up in 3-time winner (38) Romana (5yo; dam by Al Mufti), who is a full sister to Gr1 winning sprinter O Caesour. The grandam of Caesour is Dinner Partner, who belongs in the Buckpasser affinity group. Could be interesting when taken at face value. The bottom female line is the one of champion sprinters Harry's Charm, Enchantress and National Currency.

Camden Park
Sire of champion Jay Peg and of top 2008 (Cape) 2yo Consensual.
From his first crop comes (43C) Amber Bouquet (4yo; dam by Al Mufti), a stakes placed 3-time winner bred on the same cross as Jay Peg: Camden Park x Al Mufti. The cross doubles Al Mufti's dam Lassie Dear, who is by Buckpasser. Grist on the mill of Daylami.

Centenary
Broodmare sire of SWs Buran, Second Fortune, Miller Time and Words Of War.
The first two runners for (17) Fine Year (12yo; dam by Rouletabille) are both multiple winners by Saumarez. The mare is a 3-time winning half sister to two dams of black type horses, while the grandam is famous matron Sun Lass. The mare is in foal to Daylami, whose damsire Miswaki is a close genetic relative of Centenary's sire Alydar.

Chilly Billy
The Party Time family is represented by (35) Promenade (6yo; dam by Elliodor). The mare is full sister to 2 winners and half sister to three stakes performers, one the dam of Champion 3yo Sprinter Let's Rock 'n Roll. She is in foal to Daylami.

Coastal
Broodmare sire of Gr1 winners Surfing Home & Badger's Coast, Disappear, and Gr1 placed Star Of The Sea. Coastal's dam is by Buckpasser.
The Buckpasser looks a suitable hook to Daylami for SA Oaks winner (5) Victoria Bay (17yo; dam by Be Glorious). The mare has bred 6 winners from 7 runners to date, the winningest of which was relatively unsuccessful sire Iktamal - the latter's pedigree intrigues as he is inbred to Sir Gaylord (from Sir Ivor, Habitat) while his dam is by Nijinsky (son of Flaming Page). So if this combination of elements worked for the mare, then Daylami might well be able to improve on it.

Complete Warrior
Broodmare sire of Gr1 winners Captain Al & Shadow Dancing, Gr1 placed Fine Hope, Freedom Fortune and Roman Charger. The Warrior's own dam is genetic relative of Buckpasser, which may explain the success of his daughters with Al Mufti - Captain Al a case in point.
(16) Expo (18yo; dam by Alyscamps) is a winning half sister to Gr1 winner & sire Jungle Warrior. She has produced four winners to date (one by Captain Al.) and is in foal to Daylami.
Stakes winner of 7 races (34) Pirate Lady (11yo; dam by Dancing Champ) is daughter of Gr1 winner Cool Success, whose sire Dancing Champ looks a sitter for Daylami. Certainly the elements of the match of Complete Warrior with Dancing Champ all points in that direction. Looks a very nice mating.
Gr3 placed stakes winner (12) Close Friend (17yo; dam by Jan Ekels) has had six runners to date, five of them winners, from a variety of sires, none of them linking to Complete Warrior's Busanda affinity. Daylami may provide the break-through.

Condorcet
(40) Seven-a-side (21yo; dam by Ragtime) is a stakes winner of 8 races and the dam of six winners from a variety of sires. She's in foal to Daylami.

Cordoba
Broodmare sire of SWs Hello Margarita, Zolaroyale, Subastador, Winter Ade, Syrian Sonja & others. Cordoba's sire El Gran Senor is out of a mare by Buckpasser.
Three-year-old winning filly (45) Carmelita (3yo; dam by Northfields) is a half sister to 4 winners, two of those stakes horses. This is the female line of Horse Chestnut. She sells as a filly for stud.

Doyoun
You wouldn't dare. To use the free service to Daylami for this mare would be real HillBilly stuff - both mare and Daylami are by Doyoun! Still, we are aware of what Doyoun's affinities are. You're bound to come up with a suitable alternative.
The first two foals of Irish-bred (39) Santa Domenica (11yo; dam by Pennine Walk) are both winners. The mare (currently in foal to Spectrum) is a half sister to the dam of last year's top English 2yo Indian Ink (by Indian Ridge) - so maybe new Riethuis stallion Imperial Stride is a suitable solution?

Elliodor
Broodmare sire of Gr1 wnnrs Trademark, Dog Wood, Donatella, Cordocelli and of a host of other Gr1 pl horses incl international star Tiza.
All four runners to date for (20) French Sun (12yo; dam by Del Sarto) are all multiple winners, and incl Gr2 wnnr Chant de Nuit, by Caesour. The mare is a half sister to the dam of Sun Screen and Tan Can. Big things have come from this female line. More will follow. The mare sells in foal to Daylami.
Natal Oaks winner (2) Time Piece (12yo; dam by Do Battle) is a full sister to July winner Super Quality, and is the dam of 2 winners to date, both by Saumarez. The mare's dam Reveille is closely inbred (2x2) to close genetic relatives Death Ray and Clouds. The mare is in foal to Daylami.
(18) First Debutante (23yo; dam by Double First) has made her mark and is well and truly at the end of a long stud career. Essentially you're buying this grand daughter of Party Time for her Daylami foal. Interesting to note that of her 15 foals only three have been colts.
Winning mare (28) Key To Heaven (13yo; dam by Esplendor) has three multiple winners to her credit, including Gr3 winner Key Decision. The latter is by Goldmark, drawing attention once again to the potent cross of that sire with daughters of Elliodor. The mare is not in foal.
Gr1 Fillies Guineas runner-up (14) Darby Game (16yo; dam by Gummo) has an American pedigree background. This 4-time winning mare is the dam of a stakes placed winner and sells in foal to Daylami. Her 2008 yearling by Jet Master made a million at Nationals (and looked to have the right kind of pedigree).
Lightly raced (9) Birdsong (7yo; dam by Roland Gardens) is a full sister to black type earners Kokkewiet and (41) Sherry Elizabeth (12yo; dam by Roland Gardens). Birdsong has yet to have runners, and sells in foal to Silvano. Her full sister Sherry Elizabeth, who is dam of a 3 time winner by Saumarez, is not in foal.
(36) Queen Of The Park (11yo; dam by Royal Prerogative), dam of a winner by Saumarez, is a half sister to highly rated Gr1 winner Fov's Favourite (by Foveros) and to Georgie Gorgeous (unraced dam of 4 black type horses by different sires). The mare is in foal to Daylami.
Two of the seven winners produced by (30) Model Contest (22yo; dam by Sarnia Call) have black type. This aging 3-part sister to Model Man is not in foal, for the second year in a row.
(29) Malibu (19yo; dam by Sir Gaylord) is an unraced half sister to Gr1 winner Milleverof, from an American black-type producing female line. Her grandam is a daughter of Buckpasser, the next dam a close genetic relative of Mill Reef & Rose Ness. All of which might get Daylami's attention. The mare is in foal to him. She's already dam of a Gr3 placed 5-time winner by Shoe Danzig (whose damsire Tell fits the Mill Reef scenario from the mare). Should be interesting.

Ethique
Full brother to champion racemare Empress Club, from the highly successful E-family (which has a big 3yo European runner for Coolmore in 2008).
Stakes placed multiple winner (23) High-jay (13yo; dam by Northern Guest) is a full sister to Gr3 winner Boy Jayson. She has had three runners, all winners, from a variety of sires. The mare sells in foal to Spectrum. The mare's damsire Northern Guest might go well with Daylami (giving a Buckpasser double through Sex Appeal).

Forest King
Gr2 winner of 8 races (43A) Forest Fantasy (20yo; dam by Boot Camp) is the dam of six winners, including Gr1 placed Gr3 winner Even The Wind. The mare has a strong background of Fair Trial (and related lines). She is in foal to Spectrum.

Glenstal
Irish mare (25) Just Do It Joey (18yo; dam by Ahonoora), stakes winner of 7 races, is dam of four winners, three of those by Noble Thatch (Golden Thatch). The mare is half sister to English Gr1 sprinter The Tatling (by Perugino), to stakes winner Amazing Dream (Thatching), and to the dam of a stakes winner by Tirol (Thatching) - all of which shows inbreeding to the same female line (Ahonoora, Thatch, Special all have it). She sells in foal to Daylami. The mare's sire Glenstal is out of a mare by Sir Ivor.

Jallad
Broodmare sire of stakes winners Port Of London, Joshua's Dream, Majestic Sun, Red Dor, Charlie's Island.
Three-time winning (19) Flicker Of Light (6yo; dam by Forest King) is a half sister to five winners out of Gr1 winner Forest Fantasy (who is also at this sale, lot 43A). She's in foal for the first time, to Daylami.

Kentucky Slew
Five time winner (27) Kentucky Power (15yo; dam by Piaffer) has had 3 runners to date, all of them winners by Spaceship. The mare is in foal to Daylami, a mating which features the close genetic relationship between the dams of Miswaki and Seattle Slew.

London News
Two-time winner (51) Sashay (4yo; dam by Al Mufti) sells as a filly for stud. Her sire London News is a half brother to her maternal grandam, giving inbreeding 2x3 to famous matron Soho Secret. The mare's dam is a full sister to Gr1 winner Lady Brompton (dam of Gr1 winner Kings Gambit, by Silvano).

Model Man
Broodmare sire of Gr1 winners National Spirit and Pointing North, and Gr1 placed Tan Can, Monet, Sun Screen, Joshua's Mistress.
Stakes winner of 3 races (1) Tamela (15yo; dam by Chindit) is in foal to Daylami.
Multiple Gr1 placed 3-time winner (3) True Match (9yo; dam by Northern Guest) has had one runner, a 3-time winner by Strike Smartly. The mare's dam is by Northern Guest (brings Buckpasser). She's not in foal.
Lightly raced (33) Pin Cushion (5yo; dam by Roland Gardens) is a 3-part sister to stakes winners Kokkewiet and Sherry Elizabeth (the latter also on this sale, lot 41). The mare is in foal, for the first time, to Silvano.

Mullineaux
Gr1 placed 5-time winner (21) French Treasure (20yo; dam by Master Polly) is dam of one winner, stakes placed Mink Coat. She is not in foal.

National Assembly
This sire is out of a mare by Buckpasser, but his affinities appear to be going the way of Danzig.
Gr3 pl winner (6) West Wing (9yo; dam by Only A Pound) has had two living foals to date, the youngest of those a yearling. She's a full sister to the dam of Gr1 performer Flintlock (who is by Dominion Royale), the next dam Refer To Daddy a Gr1 placed Gr2 winner of 7 races. The mare is in foal to Daylami.

Northern Guest
Currently South Africa's leading broodmare sire. His daughters have produced Gr1 wnnrs Crimson Palace, Honour The Guest, Let's Rock 'n Roll, Zeeno, Bold Ellinore. Northern Guest's dam Sex Appeal is by Buckpasser, and is a daughter of influential broodmare Best In Show.
(8) All Too True (11yo; dam by Bold Speed) is a winning half sister to 5 other winners, their dam multiple Gr1 winner Please Be True. The mare has produced three winners to date, from different sires. She's not in foal.
The five winners produced by (31) Northern Duel (15yo; dam by Free Will) include three black type runners, all from different sires. The mare wasn't covered last season (she had a very late foal). Her pedigree combines Buckpasser and Never Bend.
(43) Sucha Dancer (22yo; dam by Persian Wonder), who is a full sister to Gr1 wnnr Last Watch, has given us ten winners, incl SWs Charisma (by Seattle Slew sire Salaadim) and Stud Master (by Blushing Groom's son Desert Team). This suggests that the Buckpasser link is of value. The mare isn't in foal.

Northfields
Five-time winner (11) Brookfields (21yo; dam by What a Pleasure) is the dam of five winners, from a variety of sires. She is not in foal.

Phantom Earl
Stakes placed four-time winner (32) Phantoscope (17yo; dam by Wardlaw) is half sister to Gr3 winner Improvise, their American dam a half sister to sire Proclaim. The mare is dam of a winner and sells in foal to Daylami.

Plugged Nickle
Gr2 placed (24) Hyperdrive (15yo; dam by Elliodor) is a half sister to Gr3 winner First Arrival (dam of Gr1 winner Let's Rock 'n Roll). This is the Party Time female line. The mare has produced six winners from a real variety of sires. She's in foal to Daylami. Of interest must be that Plugged Nickle's dam is a 3-part sister (by Buckpasser) to Lassie Dear, and that Plugged Nickle himself is a close genetic relative of Miswaki's dam.

Rakeen
From the stallion who produced Jet Master comes 2yo (48) Kelvin Grove, who sells as a filly in training. Her dam Seven-a-Side (Condorcet) is a stakes winner of 8 races and has produced six winners to date.

Saumarez
Broodmare sire of 2007 Epsom Derby winner Authorized (TFR 133) and of German Gr1 winner Gentlewave (TFR 120).

She's in foal, for the first time, to Spectrum. That mating gives 2x3 inbreeding to Rainbow Quest, which looks interesting.
Lightly raced (50) Priscilla (4yo; dam by Free State) is a filly in training. She's a half sister to 3 winners out of stakes placed Elzebetha (half sister to Gr1 winner Great World).
Lightly raced (37) Red Summit (4yo; dam by Hard Up) is in foal, for the first time, to Daylami. She comes from the Sun Lass female line.
