Cracking The Code

In racing, everyone has a chance. You don’t need to have big bucks to buy a big horse. As the members of the syndicate that owns Asylum Seeker, for one. They secured the filly for a modest R50.000 and had the time of their lives. Two legs of the 2yo Fillies Triple Crown and the dream of the R1 million bonus if the third leg could be won as well. In the end they didn’t (no one has yet won any of the Triples), but with over half a million in earnings in less than 12 months they won’t be crying.
Horses don’t know their price, as clever wags tend to say.
A year before Asylum Seeker, champion 2yo Rock Opera and Gr1 winner Zaitoon, went through the ring at the 2yo Sale for modest money. Also there was Gr1 winner Let’s Rock ‘n Roll,
but he didn’t reach his reserve and was sold outside the ring.
No doubt the 2006 National Sale will throw up an unexpected big one again. No one has yet cracked the code. Who knows where the lurker will be? Undaunted, Karel Miedema takes a stab at it by looking at pedigrees of the over 400 possibles.

Al Mufti (Roberto)
SA’s top stallion, never mind what anyone says. Three sons at stud, including successful Captain Al, and a host of Gr1 producing daughters. Who knows where the next one hides?
The colt out of SA Oaks runner-up (234) Yasnaya (Coastal: 1r/1w) represents a cross which surprisingly has been tried just once, producing 5-time winner Al Jestic. Coastal suits Al Mufti, making for a 3x4 Buckpasser, who seems to be a major affinity for Al Mufti (Victory Moon a case in point).
(218) War Women (Ginistrelli: 2r/1w) is the dam of Gr1 winner Warning Zone and four other winners, all from different sires. The colt on offer is a full brother to a 2-time winner, the mare is a half sister to 2 Gr1 winners.
Imported German mare (95) Pailita is a daughter of sire Monsun, who is setting Europe alight at present. The mare herself is very inbred, and it is a surprise that she went to Al Mufti and not Silvano, who makes for a dynamite match. On offer is a colt. The mare is a half sister to two top race fillies in Europe.
(213) Via Condotti (Raise A Man: 5r/3w) is the dam of four multiple winners by Jallad (one Gr2 placed), and from a topclass female line. She has a filly with obvious paddock potential. So, too, has the fully out of (52) Luna Rosa (Selenio: 3r/1w). The mare, who is a half sister to three cracking good colts, has three stakes horses among her seven winners, which also include the dam of another black type horse.
(159) Shoe Baby (Shoe Danzig) is a half sister to multiple Gr1 winner Ingleside, from a topclass female line. She has a colt, her 2nd foal.

Albarahin (Silver Hawk)
Freshman sire who only just missed the top spot in that category in 2006.
One on offer here, a half sister to 2 winners out of (388) Genial Joy (Ginistrelli).

Almushtarak (Fairy King)
First season sire in SA, with 1 crop racing (and winning) in the UK, produced before he immigrated. He was a topclass, tough racehorse, who travelled the world with success.
(117) Queen Of Stars (Crystal De Roche), half sister to Gr1 winner Fov’s Favourite, is the dam of 3 winners. She has a half sister to those.
(145) Saucy Elly (Elliodor), who has a strong Court Martial pedigree background, is the dam of 5 winners including multiple Gr1 winner Cordocelli. She has a half brother.
Influential mare Thong is duplicated 5x3 in the filly out of imported mare (387) Geiger’s Melody (Geiger Counter), who only previous foal is a winner by Shalford, and was therefore inbred to Thong as well.
Two of the previous winners out of (397) Gold Index (Golden Thatch) are black type performers. She has a colt inbred 4x3 to full siblings Special and Thatch (both by Forli out of Thong).
Gr3 placed (224) West Wing (National Assembly) has a nice pedigree herself, combining Danzig with suitable affinity elements. The mare is a daughter of Gr1 placed Gr2 winner Refer To Daddy, and comes with a colt, her 2nd foal.

Announce (National Assembly)
From just a handful of runners in his 1st crop, the sire of Gr3 placed Sound of Thunder.
The family of 3-time winning mare (195) Sweet Suffragette (Averof) has a good record with National Assembly’s elements, witness Gr2 winner Deliberation (her half brother) and stakes winner Hector (her son). The mare comes from a good family and has a colt on offer. Looks a good mating.
Multiple winner (91) October Morn (Cordoba) has had one foal to race, a winner. On offer is a half brother whose pedigree boasts 4 lines of famous mare Natalma, no less.

Came to light with a spate of winners this year, and will stand his next season in Natal, assured of better access to opportunities.
