Best to the Best

Author Peter Bernstein, in his excellent book ‘Against The Gods – the remarkable story of risk’ regales the tale of Francis Galton’s work ‘Heriditary genius’. Galton’s primary goal was to understand how talent persists through generation after generation in certain (human) families. His objective was to classify people by ‘natural ability’. Since few individuals within a group of people are eminent, few of their offspring will be eminent. And since most people are average, their offspring will be average. Mediocrity always outnumbers excellence.
Galton propounded a general principle that has become known as regression, or reversion, to the mean. In one experiment, reported in 1885, Galton’s focus was to see how a particular attribute was passed on by heredity from parents to children. He used height, or in the language of his time, stature, in a sample of 928 adult children born from 205 pairs of parents. To analyze the observations, he had to adjust for the difference in height between men and women. He multiplied the female’s height by 1.08, summed the heights of the two parents and divided by two. He referred to the resulting entities as ‘mid-parents’.
The result of his experiment was stunning. When compared to the median height (‘median’ means half the group were taller, and half the group were shorter), the mid-parent height-groups above the median all had children whose median heights were below theirs, and all mid-parent height-groups below the median all had children whose median heights were above theirs. This despite the fact that heights were scattered all over the place – some tall parents had short children, well below the median, some short parents had tall ones, above the overall median. What’s at work is ‘regression’ or ‘reversion’ to the average. Nature’s way of making sure things do not run out to extremes.
The parallel of height with something like racing ability seems clear. The oft-quoted ‘breed the best to the best’ will generally result in above average ability, even if that ability will (generally) be below that of the parents. Conversely, well above average ability can – in individual cases, not on average – come from anywhere. Nature may have rules, but within the rules there’s utter randomness. Thank heaven. For if it wasn’t the case, then ‘best to best’ would be infallible. And where would that leave the yearling sale or, for that matter, our carefully studied pedigree evaluations? Better we keep guessing. It’s a lot more challenging and, come to think of it, a lot more fun.
What follows is Karel Miedema’s annual meander through the family make-up of the National sale yearling pedigrees – simply the best our country has to offer.

Jet Master prevailed by a nose, going on to become Champion Sire the season after that, but rather faded as sire of 2yo’s subsequently. Jet Master (Rakeen)
The rise has been meteoric. Not just from Champion racehorse to Champion Sire and sire of Champions, but also in terms of stud fee. Jet Master could be had for 20k in 2005 (the current crop of 3yo’s), and 65k in 2006 (current 2yo’s). Then came the championship and with it went the fee. The current crop of National Sale yearlings were conceived at 200k, which presumably meant that the quality of mares he got also took a jump upwards. The question is, will the 53 National Sale yearlings as a group be able to show a profit on their cost price in real terms? Should buyers expect higher reserves than in the past? Will the runners from this crop be even better than what Jet Master has produced before?
We live in interesting times.

Waseela record to date shows 6 winners (all colts!) incl Gr1 placed Gr3 winner What A Question, and a multiple winner in Europe. Speed appears to be family trait, and the colt on offer looks to be a sprinter/miler. Interesting pedigree.
The sire x broodmare sire cross with Al Mufti looks the part. Gr1 winner Little Miss Magic comes from it, as does recent stakes performer Comet Chaser. All the stakes horses from the cross have been fillies so far. It is noteworthy that Jet Master’s damsire Rollins is out of a full sister to Roberto, who is sire of Al Mufti. The yearling from stakes winner (63) Capture The Wind (Al Mufti: 19r/15w/2sw) is a filly. She’s half sister to Gr1 placed Capture The Gold, while her dam is half sister to Champion Enchanted Garden.

The mare, who is by sprint-sire All Fired Up, is half sister to topclass sprinter Basic Instict, yet seems to pass on stamina – her 6-time winner Hot Lava (by Aristis) won up to 3000m. The yearling colt should be expected to go a mile or more.

The family has produced other like that, such as Derby winner Ravishing, stayed Red Badge, and sprinters Geordoba and Villandry. Chances are the yearling filly offered will be a sprinter. A third foal, she’s half sister to 2yo stakes placed Dragon Lily, twice winner over 1000m. There’s much to like about the mating, as this is the Lily-female line. Lily’s grandam Elevated is by Dignitary out of a mare by Polystome out of a mare by Greatorex. Compare this to Jet Master’s bottom female line ancestor Midnight Fun, by Illustrious (Polystome x Greatorex mare) out of a mare by Dignitary out of a mare by Polystome. The mare’s female line is the same as the one of Shadeed’s sire Nijinsky. On offer is a yearling half brother to 4 winners in the US & Britain.

Parade Leader (Kingmambo)
When it comes to eating humble pie, none have partaken more of it than this stallion’s owner Mike Rattray. He wasn’t impressed after the sire’s first crop. But as the saying goes: “Make a statement about a horse, and the horse will take it from there”. Gr1 winners Pierre Jourdan, Rudra, Laverna are ample evidence of the stallion’s comprehensive revenge. Mike takes it graciously!
Winning sprinter (495) Shee’s Mine (Braashee) is half sister to the versatile multiple champion Key Of Destiny, who made his mark here and in Dubai. Just as Qui Danzig interacted with the mare’s damsire Secret Prospector in Key Of Destiny, so is there great commonality between Parade Leader and Secret Prospector in terms of pedigree. By extension, one might then expect Parade Leader and Qui Danzig to go well together – and they do, as sire and damsire of Pierre Jourdan! Altogether the yearling colt on offer has an intriguing pedigree, and must be one to note.

Silvano (Lomitas)
As stallions go, they don’t come much better than Silvano. With a 126 Timeform, he’s rated on a par with Jet Master and Horse Chestnut. He hit pay-dirt with his first two crops in Germany, from which graded winners in Europe and USA resulted. His first South African crops were no different, the success spearheaded by dual classic winner Kings Gambit, subsequently Gr2 runner-up in top company in UK. He may not quite be able to challenge Jet Master for the champion sire’s title, but once the latter’s PP & full sister retire, things could be different. At present Silvano looks to be the heir-apparent. Who would have thought? By a German-bred sire himself, from an American female line without ‘big’ names close up, his pedigree had little for the locals to hang their hats on. Now all the hats are up in the air in celebration of success.
With Gr1 winners Kings Gambit and King’s Cross, the sire x broodmare sire alliance with Al Mufti is bound to be explored to the hilt in future. The breeders of the colt out of winning sprinter (9) Al Marina (Al Mufti: 7r/6w/2sw) got there ahead of the pack, as this is the only one bred on the cross on the sale (and one of only two in Silvano’s 2008 crop). The mare is stakes placed, from the Sister Sublime female line. Her yearling is a colt.
Seven time winning miler (562) Tickled Pink (Allied Flag) is full sister to Gr1 (classic) placed Allied Prospect. Singspiel’s sire In The Wings is by Shirley Heights, the latter also sire of the mare’s dam. Looks an interesting mating, also in view of what Alan Porter wrote on the Pedigree Consultants website in October last year:
“We mentioned the under-appreciated Sadler’s Wells grandson Singspiel here a few weeks ago, and he also had a juvenile group winner in Zeitoper (TrueNicks A++), who captured the Prix de Conde. Out of the English 1,000 Guineas and Oaks winner, Kazzia, Zeitoper is one who should improve with age and relish Derby distances, as he is a brother to the Dubai Sheema Classic victor Eastern Anthem. Since Kazzia’s broodmare sire Zinaad is by Shirley Heights, also the maternal grandsire of Singspiel’s sire In the Wings, Zeitoper and Eastern Anthem are inbred to Shirley Heights, a pattern that is in several other Singspiel stakes winners.”

The mare is full sister to Gr1 & Gr2 placed Pratique, and half sister to the dam of Gr1 placed Gr2 winner Carry On Katie – a daughter of Western Winter and thus 3-part related to the yearling colt on offer. The youngster is bred on a productive sire x broodmare sire cross to boot.
Bred on the same cross is the yearling filly out of Gr1 winning miler (303) Legality (Model Man: 18r/13w/3sw). The mare is a daughter of Gr2 winner Legal Find, from a French female line which also produced Gr1 performers Gray Cashmere and Tiger Shark.
American mare (445) Quiensabe (Mt. Livermore) is half sister to two US stakes winners. The female line is English, with the mare’s stakes placed dam a half sister to champion sprinter Moorestyle. The yearling colt offered is his dam’s second foal.
Multiple Gr1 winning miler (134) Duchess Daba (National Assembly: 17r/15w/1sw) comes from a successful sire x broodmare sire cross, which produced Gr3 winner Nevvay. The mare comes with a colt, following two fillies before that.

Lightly raced (276) Kali Mist (Rakeen: 6r/2w) is half sister to Champion Yard-Arm, by Western Winter, and to Gr3 winner Donya, dam of Drift Ice, by Western Winter. That makes the yearling filly on offer a close relative to the stakes winners. She’s half sister to a 4-time winner, her dam’s only foal to race. One to note. The same goes for the filly out of mile-winner (152) Eris (Rakeen: 6r/2w), who is a full sister to Kali Mist, and whose yearling is therefore a full sister in blood. Interesting to see how they compare physically..
Stakes winning stayer of 5 races (472) Rubirosa (Rakeen: 6r/2w) is full sister to Champion Young Rake. She’s the dam of a multiple winner and comes with a half sister to that one. Looks an interesting mating, given bottom female line backgrounds of sire and dam.
