Count Dubois Half Brother 210.000 gns
One of the lots earmarked to feature at the head of proceedings on the opening day of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale was the half-brother to the Irish 2000 Guineas winner Indian Haven. Catalogued as lot 846, the colt by Cape Cross out of the Legend of France mare Madame Du Bois is also a half-brother to the Group 1 Gran Criterium winner Count Dubois having been bred by Philip Freedman’s Cliveden Stud. Consigned to the sale from Lord and Lady Lloyd-Webber’s Watership Down Stud, the colt was knocked down to Shadwell Estates’ Angus Gold for 210,000 guineas and continued last week’s strong sales results for the progeny of Cape Cross. Shadwell Estates, whose principal Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum was in attendance, made an impact on the opening day, buying nine lots for 1,090,000 guineas to go with the 19 lots for 3,380,000 guineas that they purchased in Book 1 of the October Yearling Sale.
Count Dubois Continues To Burn Them
Course records are not often broken so it is really significant when one is smashed the way Dante’s Inferno did in the topliner at Clairwood yesterday. He was Count Dubois’ very first winner and the horse that first drew all of our attention to the fact that his sire had the makings of a champion. Dante’s Inferno was sent to the races as an early 2yo and was a good 2nd ahead of Captain In Command. He won his next start beating Grand Duke by 1,5 lengths in January 2005. He has now won 5 races and been placed 13 times for earnings of over R300,000 and has won his last two starts in a row. In fact his last four starts include 2 wins and 2 seconds. As a graduate of Count Dubois’ first crop he is now a 5yo.
Count Dubois has another exciting runner this weekend, half brother to Bernard Kantor’s Rakeen gelding that won so well at the Vaal today (out of Glad Singer), first timer Noble Tenor runs over 1200m at Scottsville on Saturday and we hope this will be his sire’s 99th winner. If like us, you have absolute faith in Count Dubois, you will have a few rand each way. Noble Tenor is a three parts brother to the SA record weanling sold at auction - by Count Dubois out of Glad Singer’s daughter Bacci.
The first of our two major website upgrades have been completed. You can now view the Count Dubois DVD on our website by opening his page at www.freemanstallions.co.za and clicking on the link. We have loaded new visuals and information but will add new statistics shortly.

Weanling
John Freeman set a new South African record for a weanling, when outbidding spirited opposition to secure a colt out of Gr2 placed mare Bacci for R300.000. The youngster is his dam’s first foal, the mare a daughter of multiple stakes winner Glad Singer, from the family of Breyani. Second highest price was R90.000 for a filly out of imported Caerleon mare Estime, signed for by Highlands.
