Daylami
Daylami, who achieved worldwide acclaim as the first winner of the Emirates World Series Championship, has been acquired to stand at stud in South Africa.
As a Classic winner of seven Gr1 races in France, England, Ireland and USA, Daylami is easily the most accomplished racehorse ever to be exported to South Africa.
He will stand at the Riethuiskraal Stud of Mr Altus Joubert, current Chairman of the TBA and breeder of the 2005 joint Horse of the Year, National Colour, as well as Crimson Palace, who became the first SAF bred filly to win at Gr.1 level in USA when taking the Beverly D. Stakes in the Godolphin silks in 2003.
Making the announcement on behalf of the joint owners, HH The Aga Khan & Sheik Mohammed’s Darley Stud, Gilltown Stud’s Pat Downes said that the sale of a racehorse of the calibre of DAYLAMI recognises the emergence of South Africa in international racing and breeding.
European Champion 1999, Cartier Horse of the Year and Eclipse Award Turf Champion, Daylami won the French 2000 Guineas (Gr.1) in the colours of his breeder, The Aga Khan, before being transferred in an unprecedented arrangement to race for the Godolphin Stable of Sheik Mohammed.
He won six Grade 1 events for Godolphin including the Eclipse S., the Coronation Cup, the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth II S. (by 6 lengths), the Irish Champion Stakes (by 9 lengths), the Man O War S. in New York and the Breeders Cup Turf, earning a Timeform Rating of 138.
Retired to Gilltown Stud, Daylami had instant success with his first crop, siring five Stakes Winners including the 2003 Irish Champion 2 Year Old Grey Swallow, who went on to win the 2004 Irish Derby (Gr.1) and the 2005 Tattersalls Gold Cup (Gr.1) and achieved a Timeform rating of 129. Grey Swallow was sold to Australia in a multi million dollar transaction earlier this year.
By the English 2000 Guineas winner Doyoun (Mill Reef), Daylami is out of Daltawa, one of the world’s foremost mares having also produced the 2003 European Champion 3 Year Old Dalakhani. The winner of 8 of his 9 starts including the French Derby and the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, Dalakhani also stands at The Aga Khan’s Gilltown Stud.
“We are grateful for the opportunity afforded us by the Aga Khan and Sheik Mohammed”, said Altus Joubert, “ Daylami's great racing class, his proven ability to sire a top horse, and his wonderful pedigree, will have a long term benefit for the breeding industry in SA.”
The purchase was negotiated by Robin Bruss of Northfields Bloodstock in Johannesburg.

PRESBYTERIAN NUN, a 3yo filly by Daylami was 4th in the Gr2 Italian Oaks having run 3rd in the Lingfield Oaks Trial S. (L) in England, a race which brought out the Epsom Oaks winner Look Here, who ran 2nd at Lingfield. It looks a strong formline. Presbyterian Nun may run next in the Gr1 Irish Oaks
Then VOILA ICI, a 3yo colt by Daylami was 2nd in the Gr1 Gran Premio de Milano to Andreas Jacob’s 6yo Quijano (by Acatenango), who was recording his 12th win from 19 outings and had run 3 lengths off Archipenko in the Gr1 in Hong Kong and 3 lengths 5th to Sun Classique in the Sheema Classic G1 in Dubai. So this is also a strong formline for the inexperienced VOILA ICI (beaten only 1.25 lengths) and he looks like picking up a good race in the months ahead. Daylami has three entries for Royal Ascot this week.
Given the weak broodmare market from the 3 sales that have occurred, its apparent the breeding market is softening with the economic downturn. Accordingly, Daylami’s fee has been reduced from R80,000 advertised to R50,000 (R10,000 + R40,000 LF) for the season ahead.

Gr3 win and €200,000 colt for Daylami
A grey colt by Daylami from the winner Sadlers Wells mare Sheer Bliss was sold for €200,000 (R1,930,000) at last week’s Goff Million Sale to the bid of Sir Mark Prescott. The colt’s dam has had two previous runners, with no winners, but she is a half sister to the 1999 English Derby winner Oath.
Daylami had two other yearlings in the sale, which made €45,000 (R434,000) and €40,000 (R386,000) to achieve a sale average of €110,000 (R1,066,000).
Daylami’s only yearling sold at the Deauville August Yearling Sales made €180,000 (R1,740,000).
Daylami filly wins Gr.3 in Ireland
The Daylami 3yo filly Timarwa won the Gr3 Lanwades Fillies S. over 1900m in Ireland for owner/breeder The Aga Khan, following up her commendable places in the Irish Oaks (Gr.1) and the Pretty Polly S. (Gr.1). “She needs even faster ground” said trainer John Oxx.

Daylami today had his 9th juvenile winner in UK in the past 4 weeks when
ZAKHAAREF bolted home to win by 7 lengths in the 1st race at Recar in the colours of Sheik Hamdan over 7 furlongs. The winning streak seems to have coincided with 2 factors - the step up to 7f and 8f in juvenile races in the 2nd half of the season - and the fact that the ground is firmer after a wet summer. Daylami progeny definitely prefer firm going. ZAKHAAREF is out of a mare by Red Ransom (by Roberto) and holds an engagement for the Epsom Derby 2008.
Daylami is likely to have more juvenile winners in UK as THE RIDDLER and
GREYLAMI both ran 2nd in juvenile races on Saturday and look likely to win soon.
A 2yo filly called REYAADA, who won last time out for Sheik Hamdan is set down
for the CF Weld S. (Gr.3) on Sept 30, and HAMPSTEAD HEATH, who was 4th for
Sheik Mohammed, is entered in the Gr1 Racing Post Trophy on 27 Oct and will
need to win soon in order to qualify.
Incidentally, contrary to some wild rumours, DAYLAMI is a very fertile stallion
- news from Broadlands that a mare which ovulated 4 days after being covered is
in foal is testament to that !

Timarwa, making only the 2nd start for the season and only her 3rd appearance of her career, was facing a major step up in class from her maiden win at the venue in late-May, she did enough to suggest that she has a very bright future when running 4th behind the hugely admirable Peeping Fawn, an unlucky 2nd in the Epsom Oaks, and the classic winners Speciosa (winner of the English 1000 Gr1 Guineas) and West Wind (winner of the Gr1 French Oaks) in the prestigious Gr1 Pretty Polly S on the weekend. Success at Group level can be anticipated in the not to distant future for Timarwa, a TDN rising star after her maiden success. She is set to contest the Irish Oaks Gr1 on the 15th July 2007 where she will face very similar company. Also on the weekend Daylami’s son Cougar Bay ran 3rd in the Listed Netjets Celebration Stakes over a mile and his intended next start is the Gr2 Meld S at the end of July.

Top Mares for Daylami
The 1999 world champion Daylami, now standing his first season at his new home in SA, sired 4 juvenile winners in 8 days in England last week. Presbyterian Nun defeated G3 placed Miss Deauville when breaking her maiden at Folkestone, the pair finishing 5 lengths clear. Keene's Day came from last to snatch victory from another Daylami colt, The Riddler over 7f at Beverly. Indian Days was very impressive in overcoming adversity when blocked along the rail at Sandown, checked and shuffled back to near last, switching out for a run and coming like a rocket to win by a head. Bencoolen won at Chepstow clocking a brilliantly fast 1:33.3 for one mile. These successes are well received at Riethuiskraal Stud, owned by the Chairman of the TBA of SA, Adv Altus Joubert, who acquired Daylami in late 2006 from The Aga Khan Studs as the farm's foundation sire.
“Daylami has settled in exceptionally well,” reported farm manager Spencer Cook, “his 1st mare covered was Rainbow Cake, dam of 2006 Champion Sprinter, the Equus Horse of the Year, National Colour.” He stands at fee of R80,000 (US$12,000). His 100 mares booked include the dam of USA Beverly D. Gr.1 winner Crimson Palace and Gr.1 winners Circle of Life, Fair Model, Summerline, Special Parade and Kundalini, the Oaks winners Lambarina, Timepiece, and Victoria Bay, and the 2007 Equus Champion Sprinting Filly Disco Queen.
“We feel very privileged to stand one of the great racehorses of all time, the winner of 7 Group 1 races, Eclipse Award Winner, Breeders Cup Winner, European Champion and Timeform 138. His many fans around the world will be thrilled to hear what a healthy, happy and contented horse he is. He's certainly the king of our castle,” continued Cook.
