Surging River
Last week Zandvliet Stud gave local breeders a chance to see new stallion, Surging River. The son of Gone West is a quality individual and many came away greatly impressed by the horse. A delicious lunch followed the viewing of the stallion. It was a very pleasant afternoon and the stallion looked right at home amidst Zandvliet’s beautiful settings.
Surging River is out of a mare by Seattle Slew, whose name has been to the fore in major international pedigrees lately. His grandsons Lava Man and Bernardini won the Gr1 Hollywood Gold Cup and Gr2 Jim Dandy Stakes respectively, whilst Slew is the broodmare sire of promising Irish two-year-old filly Gaudeamaus (a game winner of Saturday’s Gp2 Robert H Griffin Debutante Stakes). Slew’s son Septieme Ciel, not widely regarded as a great sire, is broodmare sire of promising sire Officer as well as recent Argentinian 2000 Guineas hero Joe Louis (Lode). Surging River shares the same sire as Grand Slam – the sire of this season’s US impressive two-year-old Bella Shambrook.
