Silvano Breaks New Ground
Silvano became the only South African based sire ever to shuttle to Europe - returning this month to his South African home, Maine Chance Farms in Robertson.
At Gestüt Fährhof in Germany, Silvano had a highly successful 2009 covering season where he covered 90 high quality mares from all over Europe at a fee of 8000 Euros.
His first two seasons at stud were spent at Gestüt Fährhof, where he became Champion Freshman Sire in Germany and 2nd leading European Second Season Sire behind Galileo.
Gestüt Fährhof is owned by the Jacobs family and Dr. Andreas Jacobs, owner of Maine Chance Farms in South Africa. And at Newsells Park Stud in England, Dr. Andreas Jacobs has recently taken over the leadership after the passing of his father, Klaus Jacobs in September 2008.
Silvano was bred by Gestüt Fährhof and raced by the Jacobs family. As a racehorse, he was one of the best in the world and competed in Germany, Dubai, Hong Kong, Australia and USA. Winner of 7 races from 2 to 5 years, from 1400 - 2200m which included the Arlington Million G1, Queen Elizabeth II Cup G1 and Singapore Cup $1,000,000 G1, was placed in 4 other International G1 events, Silvano earned a Timeform Rating of 126lb.
Silvano is by Champion Sire Lomitas out of Broodmare Of The Year, Spirit Of Eagles. Lomitas was unbeaten at 2 years and won 5 of his 6 starts at 3 years including 3 G1 events. Champion of his generation, Horse of the Year at 3, he was rated 129lb by Timeform. Lomitas was Champion Sire of Germany in 2001. Spirit Of Eagles won 11 races and has produced 2 G1 winners in Silvano and Sabiango.
In South Africa Silvano’s black type earners include Kings Gambit, Mochachino, Cape Town, Bulsara, Cape Town, Aslan, Bold Silvano, Silver Fantasy, Tuvana Silva, Rudi Rocks and Proudinsky

US Gr2 Win for Silvano
Multiple graded stakes winner Proudinsky (Ger) had no problems navigating through traffic in midstretch as he powered to a three-quarter-length victory in the $150,000 San Gabriel Handicap (G2) on Sunday at Santa Anita Park.
The 5yo Silvano (Ger) horse covered 11/8 miles in 1:48.39 on firm turf as the 13-to-10 favorite for Racing Hall of Fame trainer Bobby Frankel.
“He had a really good trip and got through when he needed to,” Frankel said. “He did his job. He’s a nice, honest horse, not a top-class horse but a nice [Grade] 2 horse.”
Proudinsky, who finished 2nd to Daytona (Ire) in last year’s edition of the race, was kept under a tight hold by jockey Rafael Bejarano and tracked from 2nd then 3rd as Porfido (Chi) assumed the role of pacesetter.
Porfido clipped off leisurely fractions of :23.86, :48.57, and 1:12.65 through 6 furlongs as Proudinsky was positioned in 4th.
With the field of seven bunched within four lengths of each other in early stretch, Proudinsky accelerated through the traffic to emerge as the leader.
“We were behind all the speed and we were going really slow, so he was dragging me along,” Bejarano said. “We needed room at the top of the stretch and the four horse [Silent Soul] was trying to keep me in, but we got through.”
Ferneley (Ire) finished 2nd, one length ahead of 3rd-place finisher Medici Code (GB).
Owned by Johnanna Louise Glen-Teven, Proudinsky snapped a sixrace winless skid dating back to his win in the Mervin Muniz Jr. Memorial Handicap (G2) on March 8 at Fair Grounds. Out of the Dashing Blade mare Proudeyes (Ger), he has won 5 of 17 career starts while earning $790,377.

...in SA Listed winner for Silvano
Animated justified her position as a very short priced favourite in a field of six when she carried her owner/breeder Bridget Oppenheimer’s colours to victory in the Bauhinia Handicap over 1000m at Turffontein (standside) on Saturday. Animated was on a hat-trick after two impressive wins in a row on the Vaal turf track and was always an odds-on shot to beat a field much watered down by the scratchings of Rosinante and Start Me Up.
Good Samaritan set a strong pace from the start, with Seat Of Power and Lady Red next in line followed by Darwin and Animated. The favourite has won making all in the past, but either couldn’t or (wisely) wouldn’t try and match strides with the low-flying Good Samaritan this time. However, Animated began to make progress coming to the last 200m and wore Good Samaritan down to lead inside the final 100m and beat the gallant pacesetter going away. Lady Red stayed on again to finish third after briefly dropping out to last at one stage, with Dream Fantasy a never-threatening fourth.
Animated was ridden by stable jockey Anton Marcus for trainer Charles Laird. She is clearly a useful sprinter, and one who is probably still on the upgrade. Her record in five tries over 1000m now stands at four wins and one close second (on debut), but chances are she does get an extra furlong. The three-year-old is a member of globetrotting German champion Silvano’s first South African crop and is out of the Harry Hotspur mare Swanilda, which doubtless is the source of her sprinting prowess. She has four times from seven starts overall, earning R243 875 in stakes.

Fifth place for Silvano
SA based sire, Silvano, is currently fifth on the German general sires list. Recently represented by the US Gr1 performer Proudinsky (3rd Citation Hcp) Silvano enjoyed a fine season with his runners particularly in Germany and Italy. His finest moment came via Mia Emma, triumphant in the German 1000 Guineas, while another daughter, Fair Breeze, ran 2nd in the Gp1 Premio Lydia Tesio.
Interestingly enough the German sires list is headed by Big Shuffle, who heads his acclaimed compatriot Monsun. The late In the Wings is third, thanks to the exploits of his Derby winning son Adlerflug.
Third European Gp winner for Silvano
Maine Chance's sire Silvano was represented by the third group winner in his first crop when daughter Fair Breeze triumphed in Sunday's Gr3 Grosser Preis Der Helaba- Hessen Pokal. Second in the Gp1 Premio Lydia Tesio last time out, Fair Breeze had previously won 3 stakes races last year. In the Hessen Pokal, Fair Breeze defeated Gp2 winning filly Scatina (Samum), with the lightly raced Monsun filly, Soudaine, a further length and a half back in third place.
Another SA based sire to be represented by a stakes performer over the weekend was Tiger Ridge. His son Storm In May, who had previously run in the Kentucky Derby, was beaten a head, by the multiple stakes winner Finallymadeit (Concerto), in the Jack Dudley Sprint Hcp.

Silvano filly defeats Horse of the Year
Brilliant 3yo filly, Mi Emma, defeated former Italian Horse of the Year Soldier Hollow to win the recent Gp2 Oettingen Rennen. Soldier Hollow, a 4 time Gp1 winner, had no answer to the star filly who won by an easy 2 lengths. Soldier Hollow (In The Wings) was coming off a 3 length win in the Gp1 Grosser Dallmayr Preis-Bayerisches Zuchtrennen. In 3rd place came the multple Gp3 winner Konig Turf (Big Shuffle).
It's the 2nd group win for Mi Emma (Silvano), who took out the German 1000 Guineas by a staggering nine lengths. Following a 2nd in the Coronation S, Mi Emma was coming into the race off a 7th place finish in the Gp1 Prix D'Astarte. Another fine advertisement for German breeding, Mi Emma is out of a daughter of champion sprinter Lake Coniston.

The first leg of Czech Triple Crown became the Lord Silvano (Silvano) show. He led every step of the way and fought off trial winner Another True Story (Piccolo), with another outsider Shaman (Magnus) in third. Gr.3 Killawulan Stakes fifth Blue Coral (Grand Lodge), the most expensive horse in the Czech Republic and winner of the Gr.2 Trial Stakes in Ebreichsdord, was injured in an accident at the starting gate. A bit underrated coming into the race, Lord Silvano broke his maiden on his second attempt and ran second in the first category race last autumn, where he showed a lot of talent. He also won impressively on his debut this season and defeated Nick of Gold (Pol), who later ran third to Blue Coral in the Trial Stakes.
A son of multiple Gr.1 winner Silvano (Lomitas), his grandam Longa (Blakeney) won the German Oaks, while her dam, Lomela (Surumu), ran third in the Gr.3 Deutscher Stutenpreis. Lord Silvano's 5th dam is the famous Love In (Crepello), the grandam of such horses as the champion half-brothers Lagunas (Ile de Bourbon) and Lirung (Connaught) and Surumu mare La Colorada, the dam of Lomitas.

Silvano Filly Leads a Hot Dance on Cold Snow
Silvano might be warm and cosy in his South African base, but his daughter FIRST TIME led them all at a hot dance when running away with the Grand Prix de St. Moritz, the feature event of the prestigious St. Moritz Racing Festival. There won't be a more unusual setting for horseracing than a frozen lake high in the Swiss Alps, but the annual Racing Festival draws racing fans as well as the High Society from near and far to enjoy the fascinating mix of fast horses and a cool scenery.
The feature race of the meeting is the Listed Grand Prix de St. Moritz with a staggering 111.111 Sfr in total prize money (650.000 Rand), and it was easy pickings for the brown 4-year-old daughter of Silvano, who showed a clean pair of hooves to her opponents, among them the very smart Quiron and Collow, to win in decisive fashion by 3 1/3 length. Bred in Germany by Gestüt Elite but now trained in Switzerland by Karin Suter, this was a much celebrated local success in front of a big passionate crowd including important owners like the Niarchos, Wildenstein, Oppenheim, Jacobs and many other racing passionate families.

US Gr3 Winner for Silvano
Gary Tanaka's Proudinsky (Ger) (Silvano [Ger]) took a short lead in the lane and edged clear to a 1 1/4 length tally in the $100,000 Bay Meadows Derby (G3) on Sunday. Conditioned by Bobby Frankel and ridden by Patrick Valenzuela, the three-year-old colt rated off the pace early and began to inch closer to the front runners around the turn and into the lane, where the colt proved best. Sent off as the prohibitive 3-5 choice, Proudinsky completed the about nine furlongs over good turf in 1:48 1/5.
Proudinsky earned his first stakes win here, following a near-miss second in the Arlington Classic S. (G3) three prior, and has amassed $147,871 in bankroll from a 6-2-2-0 lifetime mark. The winner is out of Proudeyes (Dashing Blade) and was preceded in stakes glory by his half-brother, Group 3 hero Proudance (Tannenkonig).

First Stakes Winner For Silvano (16/09/06)
Maine Chance stallion Silvano (Lomitas), whose first yearlings sold so spectacularly in SA this year, stood 2 seasons in Germany before coming here. From his first crop came Gr3 pl runners in the USA and Italy, and a host of stakes placed horses in Germany and France, both as 2yo's and 3yo's. Now there is a German stakes winning 2yo from his second crop, Lowenherz, who scored in the Junioren Preis over a mile at Dusseldorf last Saturday, at only his 2nd start. This was the same race won by Silvano's sire Lomitas 16 years ago, before going on to become Germany's Champion 2yo.
Lowenherz was bought by Maine Chance's Andreas Jacobs as a yearling, and is trained by Andreas Wohler, who also had Lomitas and Silvano in his care. The 2yo is a half brother Italian/German stakes winner Luttje Lage, to Slovakian Derby winner Lauf Nach Vorn, and to the dam of Liquido (Lomitas), who won the German and Italian St Leger. Liquido has an unraced 2yo half brother by Silvano named Led Zeppelin.
The dam of Lowenherz, Lutte Marie, is by French stallion Frontal (Le Haar) and has a German bottom female line. As has been the case with other of Silvano's good runners to date, there is complex inbreeding centering on the pedigree elements of La Colorada, the dam of Lomitas.
Silvano is fully booked for the 2006 season, which is now in full swing. His first SA are now 2yo’s.

Silvano
Silvano's 3yo daughter, Rovana Jowe, ran 3rd in the Gr3 Premio Mario Incisa Della Rochetta on Saturday. Rovana Jowe was beaten just over four lengths by champion filly Dionisia, who ran 2nd in the Gr1 Gran Criterium last year. Two Silvano colts, Proudinsky and Dwilano, ran 2-3 in a Listed race in Germany. Proudinsky was beaten half a length by Sadler's Wells colt, Saddex, in the 2000 meter event. Dwilano, is out of a daughter of Dwell - dam of new sire Doowaley, while Proudinsky is a half-brother to Gp3 winner Proudance. Another stakes performer by Silvano is Lingfield Oaks Trial runner up Fusili.
Currently ranked above his own sire Lomitas on Germany's general sires list is Silvano. Ten of his 23 runners have won in Germany, whilst 2 of his runners have won overseas. As one would have expected the sires list is headed by Monsun, who is well ahead of 2nd pl Lando and the stalwart German sire Big Shuffle.
