Gr1 win in USA for Spectrum mare

Winchester upends Champion Gio Ponti
Gr.1 MANHATTAN HANDICAP, Belmont Park, 1m2fT,
3yo+, 1st $240,000, 2nd $80,000, 3rd $40,000
1. WINCHESTER (USA), 5h, Theatrical – Rum Charger (Spectrum)
2nd dam Park Charger (Tirol); 3rd dam Haitienne (Green Dancer)
O/B: Bertram R & Mrs Firestone, T: C Clement
$240,000. Lifetime Record: SP-Ire, 16-4-4-1, $648,109
2. Gio Ponti (USA) 5h, Tale of the Cat—Chipeta Springs, by Alydar
3. Expansion (USA) 5h, Maria’s Mon--La Sylphide (Swi), by Barathea (Ire)

Trainer Christophe Clement won the 109th running of the $400,000 Gr1 Manhattan Handicap, just not with the horse everyone expected. As favored Gio Ponti, the defending champion, steadied sharply in traffic on the far turn, long shot Winchester swung six wide with a quarter-mile to run for jockey Cornelio Velasquez and blew past a wall of four horses in deep stretch to win by a half-length. Once Gio Ponti’s rider, Ramon Dominguez, found room, the dual Eclipse Award-winning turf champion surged into contention with a furlong to go, briefly gaining the lead before his stablemate went by. The winner, a 5-year-old son of Theatrical bred and owned by Mr. and Mrs. Bertram Firestone, picked up the second Grade 1 victory of his career, completing the 1¼-mile fixture in 1:59.46 on an inner turf course labeled firm. The field assembled for the Manhattan was likely the strongest for any turf race in the country this year, with six millionaires in the field of 11. Trainer Martin Wolfson sent his speedy Jet Propulsion up from Florida, believing his gelding could control the pace, and the 7-year-old led the field through a half mile stalked by long shot Interpatation and Take the Points. Gio Ponti, the champion older horse and turf horse from 2009, has now dropped five straight races, but he ran well enough to win. With the victory, Winchester won a stakes race for the first time since taking the Gr1 Secretariat in his 3-year-old season. He now has four victories from 16 lifetime starts with earnings of $672,243.

English Gr2 Derby-trial Win For Spectrum Son
A race that has proved easily the best indicator to the Epsom Derby in recent times with three of the past four winners going on to triumph in that Classic, and who’s say that trend won’t continue with the progressive Tartan Bearer. As a brother to 2,000 Guineas and King George And Queen Elizabeth winner Golan he already has the pedigree to be top class and, having only the third race of his career, there is every likelihood that there will be plenty more improvement to come from him.
He had looked unlucky when runner-up on his sole start at Newmarket last autumn and his preparation this spring had been far from straightforward and he really only had a couple of serious gallops prior to his reappearance when gaining a workmanlike victory in a Leicester maiden. The handicapper had seen fit to give him a mark of only 85 but that was wiped off the scales with a classy effort that had Epsom written all over it. He was was held up in last place until making his progress in the straight and his daisy-cutting action saw him motor down the centre of course and collar the leader inside the final furlong before he just showed a little laziness in front. He will have learned a lot from this, and with further progress likely, he strikes as the ideal sort to improve on Sir Michael Stoute’s already enviable record in the Derby.

Spectrum grandson wins Derby

The Victoria Derby, held at Flemington, is one of Australia’s premier events for 3yos. Past winners incl. outstanding performers Elvstroem, Nothin Leica Dane, Mahogany, Dulcify and Red Anchor. Run over 2500m it produced a smart field of 11 this year.
This year the race was won by 17.2 hands high Kibbutz (Golan) for David Hayes. It was an impressive performance by the winner, who outclassed runner up Littorio (Bellotto) and favourite Marching (Commands) to win by a length and a half.  The lightly raced Kibbutz, who has now won three of his six career starts , is regarded as a future Cup horse by his connections.
Former English 2000 Guineas winner Golan, a son of Highlands Farm’s Spectrum, has been relegated to the ranks of National Hunt sires in Ireland, despite producing the smart Regime in his first Northern Hemisphere crop. Golan’s own brother, Tartan Bearer, made an eye catching debut on Friday, when despite running into considerable traffic problems, finished strongly for 2nd

Spectrum Grandson Continues to Shine 29 Sept 06
Peter Chapple-Hyam’s claim that Susan Roy’s DUTCH ART is “up there with the best I’ve trained” was borne out in spectacular fashion on Friday as the colt added Newmarket’s Middle Park S. (Eng-G1) to an impressive portfolio. The chestnut has received quotes as low as 7-1 to emulate Chapple-Hyam’s Rodrigo de Triano by adding English Two Thousand Guineas (Eng-G1) glory to his Middle Park score.
“This horse is very, very good, as I’ve said all along, and he is better on better ground, too,” the trainer enthused. “I don’t think Frankie even got serious with him today.”
Dutch Art was purchased just after owner Susan Roy lost classy miler Major’s Cast (Ire) (Victory Note) on the gallops, and the juvenile’s opening salvo was to best subsequent Fillies’ Mile (Eng-G1) heroine Simply Perfect (Danehill) in a hot novice event at Windsor on June 5. He tallied the Norfolk S. (Eng-G2) at Royal Ascot in his next start before landing the Prix Morny (Fr-G1), on unsuitable going, at Deauville last out. Racing a shade freely in the early stages here, Dutch Art was never farther than a neck away from Captain Marvelous and Brave Tin Soldier (Storm Cat) until easing by those rivals at halfway. The chestnut was in a league of his own throughout the final furlong as Wi Dud claimed a forlorn second nearing the line.
“When I was third (aboard Excellent Art) in the Morny, I thought this was a special horse,” winning rider Frankie Dettori said. “I was never in danger; all I had to do was change hands, and he picked up and won like a good horse should. I didn’t even break sweat. He’s a lovely horse who doesn’t do a tap at home, but when he comes to the races he just lights up and runs.”

HELLO SUNDAY captured the Prix Isonomy at Saint-Cloud in December before returning to finish sixth in the Prix Noailles (Fr-G2) at Longchamp and third in the Prix Greffulhe (Fr-G2) at Saint-Cloud. Ninth in the Prix du Jockey-Club (French Derby) (Fr-G1) at Chantilly, he was dropped in class for the Prix Daphnis (Fr-G3), only to encounter the exciting Dilek (Sendawar) and finishing third at Longchamp last out.
Returning after a break here, he stalked the early pace before grabbing Racinger with a furlong remaining and asserting under mainly hands and heels.
“That’s my first winner in August, so I’m pleased,” trainer Criquette Head- Maarek said. “He is obviously better on soft ground and a mile will suit him better. He might take his chance in the (September 30) Prix Daniel Wildenstein ([Fr-G2] at Longchamp) if the ground is right.”

Spectrum Mare Produces unbeaten 2yo Gr1 Winner
Highlands’s sire Spectrum was again in the news this weekend. He is the broodmare sire of the unbeaten Gr1 Prix Morny winner Dutch Art (Medicean).
Since the turn of the century, Johannesburg, Elusive City and Divine Proportions have entered the Gr1 Prix Morny (Fr) with perfect records and emerged victorious.
Fitting the same profile, the unbeaten Gr2 Norfolk S. (Eng) hero Dutch Art confirmed the promise of that Royal Ascot win when adapting to the mud in Sunday’s race at Deauville.
Dutch Art is the best horse produced by a Spectrum mare to date and the Peter Chapple- Hyam trained colt is the third Gp1 winner for his very promising sire –the others being the 3yo fillies Nannina (Fillies Mile) and Almerita (German Oaks).
Dutch Art is a descendant of Irish Oaks winner Silken Glider (Airborne) and is from the family which produced Spectrum’s best runner to date, ie Golan.
On a line through Morny third place finisher Excellent Art (Pivotal), form suggests that Dutch Art is not quite as good as Ballydoyle’s star 2yo Holy Roman Emperor, who was scratched from the Deauville due to the soft ground, but hopefully the pair will meet before the season ends.

Gr2 Win In Germany For Spectrum
ASPECTUS buried the disappointment of a fruitless trip to France for the Gr1 Prix du Jockey-Club (Fr) by placing himself back among his country’s elite. He rose to prominence here in October when annexing Germany’s premier end-of-season juvenile contest, the Gr3 Preis des Winterfavoriten (Ger) and added the Gr3 Dr Busch-Memorial (Ger) to his tally in his sophomore debut at Krefeld on April 23. He found only Royal Power a head too strong in the May 14 Gr2 Mehl-Mulhens-Rennen (German 2000 Guineas) (Ger) back at this venue, before trailing in the Chantilly classic last out.
Rebounding in this competitive renewal, he raced in third and when asked to quicken at the top of the stretch soon had the measure of Lauro. Despite veering left inside the final quarter, he was always in control and needed only to be kept straight by Andrasch Starke to prevail.

Spectrum
Highlands Farms Spectrum has been in the news overseas of late. Not only is he the broodmare sire of the fast Dutch Art (Medicean), he is the sire of the promising 2yo Rainbow Mirage. The latter has won his last two starts, including a conditions race recently at Salisbury. The same race was won last year by Sir Percy (Mark of Esteem). Spectrum fillies, Kezia and Viapervita, filled 2-3 in the Listed Prix la Sorellina whilst his top-class son, Aspectus, won his 3rd group race on Sunday when he won the Gp2 Oppenheim Union-Rennen.
