Hyjo Stud Disperse a Formidable Band of Mares
Hyman and Joan Maisel of Hyjo Stud will be dispersing of 25 choice mares, most of them in
foal, during a special sale in the Kenilworth Parade Ring on 8 February at 2pm, the day after
BSA’s Cape Summer Yearling Sale.
In line with their principles, nobody from Hyjo, nor agents on their behalf, will be bidding
against prospective purchasers. While they reserve the right to retain those mares which do not
reach acceptable reserves, Hyjo’s flexibility and the exceptional quality of their mares will
ensure that wily investors obtain the right stock at the right prices.
“We’d like to point out that were are not withdrawing from breeding completely,’’ said Hyman
Maisel. “We will be breeding with a few mares of our own and those with which we breed in
partnership. We will also retain the balance of our 2009 foal crop, mostly fillies, which we hope
to offer for sale in 2011.”
In 1979 the Maisels bought an already successful Hyjo Stud, a 25 acre farm near Phillipi in the
Western Cape, from former champion trainer Terrance Millard. They have since bred and
raised countless stars of the turf including Star Effort, Corning Touch, Sweet Chestnut, Cornbelt,
Display Model, Hamilton Lady, Guys and Dolls and more recently Past Master and Ancestral
Fore. They sold eight-time winner Divine Forest for a record price at the 1985 yearling Sale and
have won various awards.
Hyjo’s small, but formidable catalogue brims with potential for breeders and owners.
Maisel believes his prize lot is Early Thaw (Western Winter), the dam of classic prospect Past
Master. She is in foal to star stallion Captain Al and Maisel says: “Past Master has already
made his mark and I believe we’ll see much more of him this season.’’
Lady Maroof (NZ, Maroof), is the dam of the vastly talented Fabiani, considered one of the few
up-and-coming horses able to beat Pocket Power in the 2010 J&B Met. She is in foal to Vaughan
Koster’s new stallion Argonaut (Western Winter), the former Champion Two-Year-Old. “Lady
Maroof has an interesting international pedigree,’’ says Maisel. “She has thrown a few lean-
looking foals, but I believe the nick with the stout Argonaut will produce a cracker. I believe this
stallion is a big name for the future.’’
Rich Honey (Joshua Dancer), hails from a family of top horses with depth and the 2nd, 3rd and 4th
dam. “She slipped a year and was barren another, but is in foal now to Antonius Pius, a son of
Danzig.’’
Mayreu is a young mare by Rakeen whose first foal Island Retreat is already a five-time winner
with black type. She carries a foal by rising star Dynasty.
There is plenty of classic speed in the pedigree of Venturesome, another daughter of Rakeen.
She’s a half-sister to erstwhile champion sprinter Hinterland and in foal to speed sire VAR.
Rock Runner (Centenary) is a winning half-sister to five black type horses including Nocturnal
Affair, Kipketer and Moonlight Gambler. She will be sold in foal to Antonius Pius.
Next among Maisel’s choices is Rock And Roll (Rakeen), who has already produced decent
horses in Nilgiri, Rock Me Captain and Temair. “Rock Me Captain won the other day for Lance
Wiid and I think he will develop into a very good horse. Rock And Roll is in foal to VAR for a nick
of speed and stamina,” assessed Maisel.
A shrewd buy will be the young mare Veritable, by good broodmare sire Sportsworld. She is
from the immediate family of stakes performer Vertical Sport and will be sold not only in foal
to Windrush, but with a Silvano colt at foot!
Although the Royal Academy mare Royal Sera slipped once, she has already produced a good
horse in Sean Tarry’s Winter Serenade. Royal Sera is in foal to Ashaawes, a Kingmambo stallion
standing with breeder James Armitage.
Also well worthy of a mention is Forefront (Pole Position) the dam of highly promising Ancestral
Fore. She is in foal to Dynasty, which means she is carrying a full brother or sister to Ancestral
Fore.
Maisel said “I know times are difficult but we are prepared to give comfortable terms to
approved buyers, by prior arrangement.”

Quality and Variety at Cape Summer Yearling Sale
THIRTEEN first-season sires will be represented at the 2010 BloodStock SA Cape Summer
Yearling Sale to be held at Sandringham Farm near Stellenbosch on 7 February, starting at
11am. The sale throws their yearlings into a mix of 254 auction lots along with progeny of all
South Africa’s established stallions. The result is a rare variety of quality and a host of potential
stars.
Pedigree expert Alan Laidlaw believes this is a sale where diligent bloodstock students will find
superb bloodstock at good value. He comments: “I have worked through this very interesting
catalogue. The deeper one goes, the more it becomes apparent that there are several superb
bloodlines represented all over. We have many good studbook families here with active second
and third dams.’’
Laidlaw believes that the offspring of Black Minnaloushe (2 lots) and Greys Inn (3 lots), to name
but two new stallions, will make the grade in South Africa. He said: “Black Minnaloushe has had
two Group 1 winners in the last year and he certainly looks the part. Greys Inn has a
phenomenal pedigree and being a son of the mighty sire of sires Zabeel he has a lot going for
him. John Kramer informs me that Greys Inn’s foals are impressive and I am looking forward to
seeing them in the flesh.”
Second season sire Tiger Ridge has already made a big impression with two winners from three
runners in his first SA crop, while the offspring of the now established Dynasty and the deceased
Victory Moon are setting the tracks alight. “Dynasty has already had three black-type horses
and looks like he has a bright future.’’
He singled out Lot 123 as a Dynasty colt with a good female line, saying: “This one is from an Al
Mufti mare and the second and third dam produced champions.”
Laidlaw is also a fan of Silvano and VAR and he said: “One can’t go wrong. They have six foals
apiece on this sale and they will be hot property. I like Lot 16 (SEE PHOTO ON WEBSITE), a Silvano
filly from Blue Acres. She is a full sister to last year’s sales-topper, Victor Silvester. Lot 110 is a
VAR from a tremendous family, the third dam produced several champions.”
Laidlaw said that Windrush, in his opinion, was an under-rated sire who offers great value. He
pointed to Lot 3, a Windrush filly from the family of Trademark and said: “There will be
differing opinions, but those who do their homework for this sale are going to walk away with
some shrewd buys!”
