Tactical Tarry Triumphs

Shrewd move by top trainer leads to great win by Captain Al filly

A shrewd tactical move by the astute Sean Tarry led to the downfall of Mike De Kock’s previously unbeaten Australian bred Banaadeer in Saturday’s R1 million Gr1 SA Nursery. Tarry opted for the colts race with his filly Carry On Alice rather than bump Majmu in the fillies’ equivalent. The move sure paid off.

The fact that the De Kock yard rate Majmu superior to Banaadeer gave Tarry the incentive to rather take on Banaadeer with the added advantage of a sex allowance for Carry On Alice. Throw in the incentive of the increased carrot of R1 million for the boys race and it was really a no brainer.

The Klawervlei Stud bred Carry On Alice ran a cracker on debut when feature placed just over four lengths behind Majmu and then came out and blitzed to victory at her second run over Saturday’s course and distance.

She faced the obviously smart Banaadeer, who had won his first two by a collective 11 lengths, including a scintillating win in the Listed Storm Bird Stakes at his second jump.

After Anton Marcus had led for most of the trip on the impressive sepcimen Banaadeer, S’manga Khumalo unleashed Carry On Alice at the 200m marker and she waltzed clear to win by 2,50 lengths in a time of 67,35 secs.

The rest were miles back and they may have to go back to the drawing board.

While Banaadeer looked invincible at 6 to 10, some of the shrewdie punters no doubt saw Tarry’s move. The winner was backed from 7 to 1 right into 7 to 2.

Carry On Alice was bred by Klawervlei Stud from Captain Al ou of the four time winning Western Winter mare, Carry On Katie.

She sold for R475 000 on the Cape Premier Yearling Sale Book 1 and races in the interests of Chris Van Niekerk, Dr J Warner and her breeders.

She recouped her purchase price plus in just over a minute here and took her stakes earnings with two wins and a place to R704 375.
