Another Meeting Moves

Officials and jockey and trainer overlap

2 Uncle Tommy wins RA Flamingo MileThe Flamingo Park Festival racemeeting has been moved from August 1 to Saturday August 8, due to the clash with the postponed Super Saturday meeting at Greyville, a big day which will now take place on August 1.

The Scottsville meeting scheduled for Sunday August 9 will move a day forward to August 8 and will run alongside the Flamingo Festival, whilst the Turffontein meeting scheduled for August 8 will now be on August 9.

The reason for the swap is because the same group of stipendiary stewards and other officials are used for both the Turffontein and Kimberley centres, while there would also be a clash of interests for jockeys and trainers.

I will be stunned to find that all these race meetings were changed in accordance with the NHA rules. The excuse to move the Phumelela controlled meetings to other dates is nonsense.

The fact that the Flamingo Park Festival is scheduled for 1 August 2015 should play no role in the decision. In any event, Flamingo Park is seen as minor centre according to Phumelela and according to its CEO, Rian Du Plessis, it is a loss making centre. There have been two meetings on one day, on many occasions. This instance should be no different.

The excuse that the swap of the Turffontein meeting from 8 August 2015 to 9 August 2015 (instead of running Fiamingo Park and Turffontein race meetings concurrently on 8 August 2015) is nothing short of bizarre. It is said that ” The reason for the swap is because the same group of stipendiary stewards and other officials are used for both the Turffontein and Kimberley centres, while there would also be a clash of interests for jockeys and trainers.” Firstly, stipes are employed by the NHA and not the operators. There are stipes countrywide. Stipes can be seconded from Kwa-Zulu Natal, POrt Elizabeth and Cape Town. Secondly, entries have not opened for races at Flamingo Park Festival or the Turffontein meeting set on 8 or 9 August 2015. There could not have been clashes and if there were any, it would only have been due to a jockey or trainers negligence in not making the necessary checks.
