Azzie July Runner Jarred Up

Veteran July jockey says Gold Circle need to sort track out

Triple Crown winner Abashiri was rushed to a veterinary hospital after the Vodacom Durban July on Saturday afternoon, very lame near fore.

A while after Mike Azzie’s runner had returned to the unsaddling enclosure following his unplaced run in the big race, Azzie noticed that he was sweating up and battling to stand on his near-fore leg, incidentally the same foot he’d injured before the Classic earlier this year.

Azzie told www.turftalk.co.za on Sunday afternoon: “Abashiri was five out of five lame and we got him to the vet immediately.

They gave him anti-inflammatories, scanned the leg and bandaged it heavily. The good news is that no fractures were found.”

Azzie said that Abashiri was thankfully walking sound on Sunday morning and that the suspicion is that he’d jarred himself up badly during the running of the race.

“He was off the anti-inflammatories, had no pain and was walking fine again, but we’ll see tomorrow. First we’ll hope that he still walks fine and then the bandages will come off. Once they are removed we can make a further assessment.”

Meanwhile, veteran jockey Andrew Fortune, who rode Samurai Blade in the July, has said that he enjoyed the experience, but that the track was ‘shocking’ and that Gold Circle needed to sort it out.

“It was my first ride there in Champions Season – they really need to sort that track out,” said Fortune.

Before we lose complete sight of the facts, let’s not forget that Mike Azzie himself said that if it was up to him he wouldn’t have run Abashiri. But he did …. he basically took a young horse, watched him rewrite the record books and then put 59 kgs on his back and set him on his way to a potential career ending injury because it ‘ was a dream for the owner to have a runner in the July ‘.

As poor as the track was reported as being, let’s not forget that Mike Azzie himself said that if it was up to him he wouldn’t have run Abashiri. But he did …. he basically took a young horse, watched him rewrite the record books and then put 59 kgs on his back and set him on his way to a potential career ending injury.

Greyville is shocking …. all the horses ran out of form… In this state I will extract and put a movement from non local owners together to boikot any Greyville races. The track is not in a healthy state and makes Turffontein look like the garden of Eden – I am sorry to say the July on such a surface and unsafe state will see my scratching my July glory desire UNTIL the management of the course feel the pressure of the public and owners….

It is time for a movement to create a NEW JULY on a NEW COURSE which allow 20 runners which can fit into a bend…. like the glory days.

I would talk to VODACOM to reconsider their sponsorship for such abusing surface – destroyinf horse futures and robbing the public blind !.

      Where do I sign?

  4. Adriaan says:

Change happen with a first move… Abashiri started it – now let us give it voice and power.

Adriaan I wish you well but like many before you the “machine” is too strong.

Watch this space. Adriaan we back you

The constant bleating by owners about the administration of horseracing has become tiresome. These complainers whine week in and week out. Action speaks louder than words and I have not seen any action to change anything in horseracing since corporatisation.

I am an animal lover. The horse must come first. In my laymans opinion the state of the Greyville grass track is dangerous and horrendous. Running horses on it is as good as cruelty to animals. Luckily for gold circle, gambling is addictive and money is a necessity so a protest by some will not prevent the others from nominating and running their horses.

These rich owners should start taking gold circle to court to prevent races from being run on the Greyville grass track until it is 100% safe for the horses. It is time for them to put their money where their mouth is and to show that they really do care for the horses safety. These owners spend millions on horses but are not prepared to take on gold circle to protect their investments.

I think its time we do something. Who will sign a petition? Thats just a start

  7. Ronny says:

Why are people complaining and whining. It’s no secret that July day is Christmas for bookmakers. nobody complained when the same horses won features on the same track or even after the gallops. You win some and you lose some, that’s racing. Just becoz a big owner (Mr Adriaan) and a moderate jockey (Mr Fortune ) lost does not mean that New ‘changes’ are needed.

    1. gavin says:

You are clueless mate… the greyville track is a joke.. calling Andrew fortune moderate shows what a clown you are

      1. Ronny says:

how many features races Andrew fortune competes in or let alone wins? he does ok in maidens and handicapping races

  9. keniza999 says:

if the track was in a horrible as state as some would like us to believe then surely most of the horses would have been affected/injured. I just think it would be best to get an expert opinion on the condition of the track…

  10. Ian Jayes says:

The welfare of the horses is not very important. It’s all about money and ego, from the sales to the racecourse. If there was genuine concern for the horses the tracks would be a lot better and doping/medication would be eradicated.

  11. Wayne Jooste says:

I think its time for Gold Circle to get in touch with the track management in charge of the upkeep of Sha Tin race course in Hong Kong. I think it is as close to the “perfect” condition as you gonna get anywhere in the world…

  12. BEATLE says:

I agree time for the July to be run at a new venue – Greyville can no longer accommodate big fields – wish South Africa could put new venue in place and attract the star overseas horses – like all sport in South Africa you have to go international – who watches Currie cup rugby and domestic cricket nowadays at home – but we enjoy watching when it’s an international game

  13. Don says:

Can we not run the July at Kenilworth? 😛

    1. Editor says:

More chance of running the Kentucky Derby at Kimberley, Don

  14. Mike Sandshaw says:

Not one horse broke down and needed to be shot so the course couldn’t have been that bad. We all know that the course is not ideal but all horses ran on an ‘even’ playing field. Not one horse’s career was ended on saturday because of the course. Injuries happen in sport and not every injury is due to the track itself.

  15. Riaan Heunis says:

You see clever does not always pay off normally you have 15 runners on a poly card 3 obvious scratchings (Reserves) that go to the favorite , Saturday only 1 favorite got a place (Isca) that is why your PA paid more than R72000 . On the turf track most races had 14 runners yet also no favorites ran places it was to competitive on the day .When the poly track was built the course was supposed to be made wider to the outside !!! Even a world class 13 time Hong Kong champion jockey like Douglas White did not have anywhere to go in the final stages of the July race as the track is to narrow , on the all the replays you can see Black Arthur was badly hampered in the final stages . Abashiri has a tendency to run to the outside he did it Saturday with the crop in the left and the right hand , he also ran out of track as everything in front of him closed up

The board of directors and management of gold circle must be held liable for racing conditions at greyvile and its assets.heads must roll.
