Strydom Injury Shock

Hope that it is an old injury

Piere Strydom –  bad luck

Hospital scans showed that Piere Strydom has a neck fracture after his tumble off Refuge shortly after the start of the fourth race at the Vaal on Thursday.

Tabnews reports that the legendary rider was rushed to the Union Hospital in Alberton, where tests revealed the extent of the damage.

When approached for comment in the evening, Strydom made the following reply: “Xrays showed a fracture, but MRI showed it most probably is an old fracture. Hope so otherwise I could be in trouble.”

This incident continued the amazing run of ill fortune suffered by our top jockeys, as in recent weeks Gavin Lerena, Anthony Delpech, Anton Marcus and now Strydom have sustained serious injuries as a result of falls.

Pierre Strydom, we are rooting for you that it is just an old fracture. We need jockeys like you, but our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Get well soon. One of the nicest persons ever!!!!!!
Strength and a speedy recovery to you and all our other injured CHAMPS.

If they all didn’t ride so short there would be less tumbles. Must somebody be killed before something is done?

  3. William Venters says:

Here we go again. Ian Jayes stock comment when jockeys fall off – they ride too short. The above article does not have all the facts. I quote from Piere Strydom’s column in today’s Racing Express in the Citizen newspaper “but I only learned later that my stirrup iron had snapped”

You’re right, we are going again, in circles. Race-riding is a dangerous profession, so why make it more dangerous by riding so short? This is not just my view. The late Charlie Barends was very outspoken on the issue and Lester Piggott was also. I am surprised that the insurers have said nothing about it. I wish Pierre well.
