De Kock grabs Greyville feature double

Varsfontein stallion Gimmethegreenlight dominated the finish of the R150 000 Listed Gatecrasher Stakes at Greyville on Saturday as his sons Barahin and Green Haze filled the top two places in the 2yo feature.

Owned by Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, whose silks were also carried to victory an hour earlier in the Devon Air Stakes by Firdoas,  Barahin gave Mike de Kock a nice early feature double under a confident ride by Bernard Fayd’herbe.

Relaxed early as Rule The Night and Across Seattle cut out the fractions, Barahin burst through the cavalry charge at the 300m and stormed clear at 9-2 to beat the late charging Green Haze by 3,25 lengths in a time of 84.87 secs.

The favourite Fitzwilliam’s stablemate Clifton Crusher made up many lengths up the straight to shade the pacesetting Across Seattle out of third.

Barahin, a recent Vaal 1200m debut winner, made it 2 wins on the trot after a decent fourth on a well-supported debut. He took his earnings to R158 625.

Bred by Wilgerbosdrift and Mauriitzfontein, Barahin is a son of Gimmethegreenlight (More Than Ready) who sired a Gr1 winner at the same track a week earlier. Barahin is out of the Silvano mare Mocha Special a one-time winner.

A real looker, the winner was a R2.6 million buy from last year’s National Yearling Sale and looks a very decent classic prospect in the making.
