Jooste Runner Wins Leopardstown Gr3

Frankel colt back to winning ways

Part owned by former SA champion owner Markus Jooste, the Frankel colt Rostropovich benefited from a drop in class to win the 2400m Gr3 Paddy’s Rewards Club Stakes at Leopardstown on Saturday.

The Aidan O’Brien-trained galloper was second in the Irish Derby two starts ago and had won the Listed Dee Stakes at Chester in May.

Sent off the even money favourite, he had to dig deep under Donnacha O’Brien to see off his stablemate Giuseppe Garibaldi and bank the €59000 first cheque.

Jooste’s co-owners are M Tabor, D Smith and Mrs J Magnier.

Bred by Epona Bloodstock Ltd, Rostropovich is a half-brother to the O’Brien’s Gr1 Phoenix Stakes winner Zoffany who was also a close runner-up to this colt’s sire Frankel in the 2011 Gr1 St James’s Palace Stakes.

The dam, who was best at 1400m, also produced the fellow Ballydoyle trainee and similarly speedy Gr3 Anglesey Stakes  winner Wilshire Boulevard and is out of the Gr3 Prix de la Nonette winner Dust Dancer who stayed a mile and a half.

And we are required to believe the NHRA that Markus Jooste is no longer personally involved in SA horse racing? The overseas colours of Markus Jooste are the same as Mayfair Speculators. After reading everything said by the NHRA about Markus Jooste and his shenanigans, how can SA horse racing allow any horse in South Africa to run in the international colours of Markus Jooste? If Markus Jooste is no longer involved in Mayfair Speculators, why are his International colours being used by Mayfair Speculators and why is the NHRA allowing the colours to be used when they represent a person who has been involved in causing severe financial misery to many South Africans? It makes no sense. The NHRA should have insisted that the colours of Mayfair Speculators be changed because they represent Markus Joooste and not an independent company where he has no interest.

Perhaps someone that doesn’t have an unholy alliance with him can explain
By resigning his colours he did not force the NHA to make an awkward decision and suspend him.
This kept the avenue open to continue racing internationally where protests wouldn’t be held and meetings threatened.
It’s a disgrace that the BHA did not take into consideration the billions lost yet permit this extravagance
