Woodruff & Khan Open Charity Mile Day

Tote favourite bounds home in style

Geoff Woodruff and Mark Khan opened the Charity Mile Day feature programme at Turffontein on Saturday when the consistent Lateral gelding Ali Bon Dubai streaked clear for his first stakes success when banking first cheque in the R150 000 Listed Java Handicap.

The 2400m feature attracted a competitive mixed bag of stayers and after Dromedaris had led the fancied American Landing, it was the 7yo Odd Rob who came forward dangerously at the 400m.

But starting a popular tote favourite, Ali Bon Dubai came forward powerfully under his handy galloping weight to catch the free striding Odd Rob by 5,60 lengths in a time of 150,24 secs.

Lonsghot Tirzan stayed on for third a further 1,75 lengths back, with Kilrain just failing to go on with his effort and staying on for fourth.

Mr Winsome looked dangerous late but also failed to sustain his run and ran just out of the money.

The disappointment of the race was Cape/KZN challenge American Landing who finished well downfield.

Bred by Maine Chance, the winner is a son of Lateral (Singspiel) out of the unraced Zundra (Count Dubois).

A R100 000 National Yearling Sale graduate, Ali Bon Dubai has won 6 races with 9 places from 21 starts for stakes of R505 250.
