Peter’s Speed Champ Sets Sights Higher

R10 000 son of Rebel King is on the up

While the Computaform Sprint is the chief medium term target, the Gr1 Cape Flying Championship to be run on Sun Met day could well be on the radar.

That was the word from trainer Paul Peter after his very progressive speed merchant Rebel’s Champ made it three wins on the trot to win the R250 000 Gr3 Lebelo Sprint at Turffontein on Saturday.- the final feature of 2018 on the South African programme.

Peter, whose first career winner was the top-class speedster Magico, who scored on July day in 2010, is yet to saddle a Gr1 winner but Rebel’s Champ could well be the horse to take him to greater heights.

“I haven’t spoken to my owners yet about the programme, but the Cape Flying is certainly an option as it is at level weights. He is a lovely horse and is improving all the time. The Computaform Sprint on 27 April is definitely in the plans though,” he told the Sporting Post after the 4yo gelding had blitzed to victory under the ‘Peter Peruvian Pro’, Carlos Herrera Gomez – who has chalked up 11 winners since booting home his maiden SA first in early October.

Starting at 3-1 and lumping top weight of 60kgs, Rebel’s Champ got the better of a spirited duel with a determined Muzi Yeni and Prince Of Kahal to win by 0,30 lengths in a time of 56,42 secs.

This was the Hyperpaint Syndicate owned Rebel’s Champ’s first stakes success and the 1000m specialist could add an interesting dimension to the Met day speed contest.

The 2016 Lebelo winner Rivarine stayed on late for third a further 1,60 lengths back.

A R10 000 purchase off the 2016 CTS August Two-Year-Old Sale, Rebel’s Champ is now a winner of 8 races with 6 places from 20 starts for stakes of R744 775.

He was bred by the Nine Bridges Association Syndicate and is a son of 2009 Equus Champion Sprinter Rebel King (National Emblem) – and the first foal of the one-time winner Anne Bonny (Captain Al).

So that’s it for the 2018 feature race programme.
