The R5000 fine meted out to jockey Randall Simons by the NHA for striking Mike de Kock filly Ghaalla more than three times on consecutive strides, and thus contravening Rule 58.10.2 (read with Guideline C on the use of the crop), when winning the Gr3 Fillies Mile on 24 November, seems a bit harsh – despite the recent publicity over the use of the crop.

  1. Beverley Hibbert says:

I disagree. R5,000 is nothing in comparison to what he probably got for this win and whip abuse IS whip abuse. Riding heels and hands races has shown you can still win without having to hit the horse on consecutive, or any other, strides for that matter. Glad to see the horses are sort of put first in this country.

  2. Tracy Harries says:

Ban them for a few weeks R5 000 is a night out for these guys .

  3. Ian Jayes says:

Thoroughbreds are very sensitive animals and people who abuse them must be punished.

  4. Wendy Van Der Hammen says:

The whip should be banned. It was wonderful to watch a ‘whip free’ race at Turfontein last month. It was inspiring to watch how it should be. More punters would support racing if there was no whip.

  5. Michele Wing says:

Racing News on Sunday evening at 8pm , carries an in-depth look at the use of the stick in racing and possible ways forward , in managing the situation .

  6. Jan Peskens says:

If the whips are banned, then the Grand National should definitely been banned. This race is far more dangerous than using a whip.

  7. Tex says:

Jockey’s in S A use a crop “pursauder” such is padded.

  8. Ian Jayes says:

Agreed, but it still must not be used excessively.
