He will partner Justin Snaith’s Saturday Gr2 Peninsula Handicap winner Doublemint in the big race on 26 January. The son of Twice Over is one of six Snaith horses in the entries.

Strydom was aboard Gimmethegreenlight when the son of More Than Ready won the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate for the Snaiths as a 3yo in 2012.

The great rider last won the Met in 2003 when he steered Angus to victory for Plattner Racing private trainer of the time, Brett Crawford.

I am really happy for Striker to land a ride in the Met. I wouldn’t write off Doublemint now.

  2. bev says:

stricker isn’t he best jockey sa has ever seen. it’s a pitty he doesn’t work ride. hence he doesn’t get food mounts anymore. all these youngsters out riding him as his always on horses with no chance of winning. still got the best hands in the business

  3. Dirk says:

Striker is a great jockey.Sadly it appears that he is almost a reserve jockey.. Gets rides that others dont take. I hope one of the days that he lands a really good winning chance.
Better still i hope he wins the met.

  4. Rob Haswell says:

Great news. Striker still winning with very limited chances did so again yesterday, and not forgetting that he should have been up on Yardarm, who won the Met in 2004

  5. Jimmy says:

Striker in his prime was the best jockey on the planet, lets not forget he is getting on and all good things must come to an end. Striker’s only injustice is he never allowed himself the global exposure his infrequent visits abroad never sufficed.

  6. Nish Moodley says:

Striker has and will always be my favorite jockey. But I must admit of late, he has lost his touch. Not sure if it has to do with him falling off horses.
There are too many instances of him pulling horses out of the race or he stops riding way before the line.
To me it would appear he is past his best & should consider retiring. His statistics for the current season are: 25wins from 188 rides at a win strike rate of 13%. Not very inspiring for a jockey of his talent.

One of the greatest – even if he were to lose his touch

Agree Ed, this is a Jockey with over 5000 + winners, and counting. Multiple Championships and definitely a man for the Big Stage.

  9. Mac says:

True my favorite sa jockey. Recently he is not getting the rides. He was South African jockey a few times and that riding predominantly in Gauteng. He could have been champion jockey if he did what all the other jocks are doing that is taking more rides outside gauteng. Great jockey though.

  10. Malcolm Draper says:

What are food rides Bev? It’s a pity you can’t spell. Maybe you need to go to a spelling farm. Striker rode won on some outsiders yesterday.
