First-Timer – Stipes Satisfied

Jockey explanation was supported by video evidence

Brett Crawford

The Western Cape Stipendiary Board are satisfied with the explanations tendered by jockey Anton Marcus and trainer Brett Crawford and his assistant, following the first-timer Boomps A Daisy being narrowly beaten on debut at Kenilworth on Saturday 9 February 2019.

Their report states in conclusion of the review:

Mr Craig Arnold (Stable Employee acting on behalf of Trainer Brett Crawford) and Jockey Anton Marcus appeared before the Board with regard to BOOMPS A DAISY.

Trainer B Crawford was interviewed later in the week.

This was a filly not without her problems, having her first run and was to be ridden on her merits with appropriate crop use.

Jockey A Marcus was taken through the video evidence to explain his riding.

He stated, inter alia, that she had been slow away and after obtaining cover he had moved the filly outwards early to obtain clear running leaving the 600m. He commenced with a strong hands ride and used the crop down the neck at the 500m.

Despite being very green he continued with his vigorous hands ride and showing of the crop. When she responded he used the crop behind the saddle in the latter stages and finished the race off well.

Marcus explanation was supported by the video evidence.

The Board was satisfied with his explanation in the circumstances.

The result:

Once again punters left in the dark. How will punters know next time out the plan to ride the horse. Vigorous hands ride again or will Marcus use the crop more? You will notice this happening increasingly more often these days. Same horse being ridden differently in each race. Maybe planned by trainer…maybe by jockey…either way punters don’t know what to expect. I noticed recently a horse that won previously from front running…ran over 2000m recently filly in open company sent to front. Week later over shorter distance in fillies company held up midfield. Horse noticeably pulling in early stages of race. Stipes need to look into these discrepancies as well and question trainers and jockeys.

I am very new in the punting game. In cricket they are very strict when it come to betting on games. How is it that trainers owners and jockeys been sponsor by betting companies .How can it be right. Betting companies have all the details and telephone numbers of punters trainers and owner’s. I just feel that it can’t be right for betting companies to sponsor and person in the betting game that’s been involve in training riding and owning horses. Then lastly every time gambling companies change rules of betting it’s always against the punters but never against the trainer. Let a trainer have one horse in a race then they can’t put wool over a punters eyes by betting on one horse but come with his other horse in the race. If u protect the trainer and gambling companies what about the punters that keep this game alive without the punters the owner trainer jockeys and breeders are dead. Look after the punters as .well
