Selangor -Kenilworth Partnership Celebrated

Cape lightweight jockey Anthony Andrews doesn’t get a lot of quality opportunities but he showed his talent when maintaining his nerve and taking full advantage of a handy weight to win the R150 000 Selangor Listed Jet Master Stakes at Kenilworth on Saturday.

The 21st  anniversary of the twinning agreement established in 1997 between Gold Circle, as custodian of Cape racing at the time, and the Selangor Turf Club, was celebrated in a new time slot and on the back of a new race at Kenilworth on Saturday.

Messrs Freddie Yow, who presented the jockey trophy to a thrilled Anthony Andrews, and Yow Chee Seng represented the Selangor Turf Club (STC), which was founded in 1896 under the patronage of British resident Sir Frank Swettenham.

A reciprocal race called the Kenilworth Cup is run every year in Kuala Lumpur and in June 2019 that race will be run for the 22nd time.

After Milton had led the way ahead of Ready Steady Go, the race was up for the taking,  with the leader tiring and the challenges coming from all sides.

Just as Ready Steady Go looked set to go on with it, Andrews produced Run Red on the rail and he switched the chestnut before taking off for an easy win.

The lightly raced 4yo gelding went past Ready Steady Go to win by 1,25 lengths in a time of 97,88 secs.

The weak favourite, Dean Kannemeyer’s Silva’s Bullet may have just needed the run but stayed on stoutly for third, ahead of Man About Town.

Trained by Andre Nel at Rondeberg, Run Red was bred by La Plaisance Stud and is a son of Twice Over (Observatory) out of the four-time winner Foxtrot Baby (Lizard Island).

He has won 3 races with 7 places from 12 starts and took his stakes earnings to R303 400.
