Guy Murdoch Keeps Scribblin’ Away!

Breeding racehorses is a long, patient game!

Veteran breeder Guy Murdoch is a patient man.

His Badger’s Drift mare Scribblin’ The Cat produced Horse Of The Year and multiple Equus Champion Futura, who won four Gr1 races – the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate, the J&B Met and two runnings of the Champions Cup.

Futura was a 2010 foal.

In between his Mom produced a Miesque’s Approval filly, who, in Guy’s words, ‘wasn’t too good’.

In 2015 Scribner, a handsome colt was born and Drakenstein stallion Futura’s full-brother caught the eye when winning at his second start at Durbanville on Saturday.

While the 3yo beat a weak field, the Brett Crawford trained gelding impressed over a distance short of his best and must improve as he steps up from the 1200m.

The R1,2 million Cape Premier Yearling Sale graduate, was, like his star full-brother, bred by Guy Murdoch from Dynasty (Fort Wood) out of the once-winning Badger’s Drift mare, Scribblin’ The Cat

Guy says Scribblin’ The Cat is 15 years old now and not ‘the easiest mare to get into foal’.

“But hey, we keep trying. This is a long and patient game, as most of us eventually realise,” he laughed.

At the Cape Yearling Sale on Sunday, Futura has one lot (#10) – a filly out of a winning daughter of champion sire Trippi. The first 4 dams all won.
