Hawwaam’s Doing Alright

De Kock July horse is Barahin

Star colt Hawwaam, who missed the recent Gr1 SA Derby after he got a fright and bolted from the parade ring, is on target to race in the R4-million Premiers Champion Challenge over 2000m on 4 May at Turffontein.

Twenty-two entries have been received for the race, including Hawwaam’s Mike de Kock-trained stablemates Soqrat, Cascapedia, Barahin and Noble Secret – with other established names like Legal Eagle, Made To Conquer and Tilbury Fort also among the nominations.

Assistant trainer Mathew de Kock commented on Wednesday:

“Hawwaam is being pointed at the Champions Challenge and then we’ll make a decision on his next race, which could possibly be the Daily News. We’ll be entering him for the Durban July, but he is not certain to run there.

“Our July horse at this point is Barahin, who may go into the big race via the Jubilee Handicap, he may not be ready for the Daily News. But we’ll play it by ear, we’ll see how things go.”

Third entries for the Champions Challenge close at 09h00 on Friday 26 April.

Weights will be published that same day.

Final declarations on Monday 29 April.

Ed . I’m confused and have always wandered about the following. Have draws for this race already been done ?? in other words has Hawwaam drawn 14, and if so what draws would additional entrants be given. Please shed some light on this.

    1. Editor says:

      Hi Avril
According to the manager of the NRB, any subsequent entries will be randomly allocated draws within the full scope of the numbers of the entries – which could well have the effect of moving Hawwaam to a higher gate
So there is no ‘penalty’ either for later entries

Any idea what’s the plans for buffalo bill Cody

Mr.Editor can you please explain-, any subsequent entries will be randomly allocated draws within the full scope of the numbers of the entries – which could well have the effect of moving Hawwaam to a higher gate.
Can a subsequent entry end up with a draw of 5 or even 14,Confused?

    1. Editor says:

Hi Pops – as explained by the NRB Manager, it seems the new entry could get any draw from 1 to whatever the total of the entries are at that point – so if it say happens to be lower than eg Hawwaam at 14, it could mean him going to 15
It’s not something that one thinks about too often. But what’s the alternative? – To effectively penalise / discourage a late entry by ensuring he gets a provisional draw higher than the first entries?
      Make sense?

  4. Avril says:

Ed I would think it fair that for all races that allow supplementary entries, the draw should only take place when entry is finally closed

    1. Editor says:

That would seem to be the fair solution, Avril
Will revisit this with NRB again in morning
