Hollywoodbets Scottsville Accident – Jockeys To Hospital

Arries and Mgudlwa come off worst

A nasty accident involving Bayview Express (Ashton Arries) and Twice Golden (Athandiwe Mgudlwa) in the third race at Hollywoodbets Scottsville on Wednesday resulted in both jockeys being rushed to hospital for observation.

“Both jockeys are stable but have been stood down and rushed to hospital,” confirmed Duty Officer Charles Bawden to Tabnews.

“Arries said he has issues with the area around his collarbone and Mgudlwa said he has issues with his knee. That is all I know at the moment.”

Mgudlwa’s mount tripped at about the 800m marker, dislodging his rider, who rolled on the ground and looked certain to be run over by Bayview Express.

However, the latter jumped over the injured jockey, landing awkwardly and falling to the ground along with his rider Arries.

This caused eleven of the fifteen jockeys to restrain their mounts, which essentially meant this turned into a four-horse race.

If anything, had Bayview Express not jumped over Mgudlwa, one can’t help but believe the jockey would have suffered way more injuries.

“Fortunately, the horses are also fine,” assured Bawden.

“The accident has forced us to have an inspection of the track. I’m on the track with a few jockeys and trainers as we speak. We simply want to ensure that the surface is safe for racing, specifically around the bend,” he added.

Ed – we have asked the NHA and Gold Circle for comment on the pre-meeting track inspections after a complaint from a trainer

Scottsville known as the graveyard in cape town like the Vaal, horses and jockeys are always injured

  5. Kelvin says:

Thank God they are ok and well done to the rest of the jockeys who reacted quickly in split second.it does not matter if it was a 4 horse race.Jockeys life is more important

  6. GkScott says:

Is there not a thing called track inspection prior to a race meeting
if so that 800 metre mark has been continuous problem why no particular care or checking before meeting commence.

  7. Kitty Salvage says:

Get well Chappie and Ashton, I’m so sorry you both got hurt!! Lots of love, Gran and Grandpa xxx

  8. Debi Vogt says:

Not completely true Rajen ….horses are intelligent and will most often try not to hurt people …

  9. Donald says:

Let that unfortunate incident remind us ALL on what a hazardous occupation the jockeys have to contend with EVERY time they ride !

  10. Peter Dembitzer says:

Natal is the worst racing in the country by miles. Races never run on time, and lost shoes delaying the start are far more frequent than any other venue.
Horses and trainers not a patch on Cape and Tvl.
Natal has far too many meetings at the expense of the Cape.
Kimberley (that is closing ) runs professionally and races always run on time with only a 30 minute interval’
Lots very, very wrong with racing in this country..

  11. Dawood says:

Nasty incident luckily injury not so serious hope jockeys recovery quickly

  12. Mashie says:

Using Tvl in your message sums up how seriously anyone would take your comment

  13. Cecil Pienaar says:

Yes Cape Town deserves more racing Mr Dembitzer. Especially Durbanville, very underutilised track.

Mondays will be open from 10 Dec onwards. Even 7 races with average 7 horses every Monday will be better than nothing 👍

  14. Elaine Rodel says:

Wishing the jockeys a speedy recovery

  15. Suben says:

I agree with one issue that horses are always pulling shoes but his happens regularly at Turffontein as well. It rarely happens at Kenilworth or Durbanville. I have yet to see a horse pull a shoe in overseas races. There should be more stringent measures in place or fines for trainers whose horses pull shoes as this causes inordinate delays.
