Mahathma Gandhi once said… the greatness of a nation, can be judged by the way it treats it’s animal…

To me it is saddening to see, an imported 8 year old, group one winning gelding, who had earned his connections a whopping, 1,8 million Rand in stakes, taking part in the 6th race of a merit rating of 56. In his last few runs he finished, 34,19,24,18 , 10 and 16 lengths behind… that alone is self explanatory. We weaned him from his mother, away from what is natural to him, even took him away from his country of birth, and left him in flamingo park when he is 8 years old…and all he did was do his absolute best and win a group1 race in the process…

We have so many problems in this game, from non paying owners and horses being injected with steroids, poorly paid grooms, all the way to under the table training deals, horses being shocked with cattle prods, and too many horses in training that we have to increase the merit ratings across the board, and I nearly forget to mention the decrease in stakes, and small fields and empty racecourse’s…. I can go on and on and on… and I’m pretty sure that you can think of a lot more.

My two cent opinion, is that we race far too often, hence we have far too many horses racing who really should not. Horses belonging to owners who are behind on their bills, should not be allowed to run, race 3 times a week, like in the old days… we tend to forget that this is the sport of kings… and not for average Joe, owning a 20 percent share, so he can hound his trainer for tips from the yard. The point that I’m trying to make, most but definitely not all people in this game, make decisions on what is best for their pockets and bank balances, rather than what is best for the horse.

I am writing this well before his race will be run, so he could win, and I sincerely hope he does win, especially since he is a champion, it’s in the racing history books…

Bring it home Big Mac… all the best in the 6th, and thanks for that humdinger on the greyville grass.
