Has the summer cup got no sponsor this year as im sure last year gbets was its sponsor?

    1. Editor says:

      Gbets no longer sponsoring, Hilton

A reader emailed us to ask:
‘Could you please enlighten me as to how the Summercup log is contrived ?
How is it that some lower merit rated horses are on the log?
    What about the distance suitability?
What about recent performances irrespective of merit rating?
How much say does the Handicapper have and on what basis?
    Thank you kindly’

We have referred the query to the NHRA for a response

The grand heritage raceday which replaced the big race on the vaal sand track sponsored by emerald casino also seems to be scrapped from the program ..It amazes me that the loss of these races and sponsors just seem to be thrown under the carpet with nobody mentioning a word about them …Seems like the dream that the summer cup could match the july is just that a dream ..Phumelela and the ra need radical and major management changes as its going from bad to worse ..

  4. Roderick Mattheyse says:

cant blame WSB for not continuing with the Grand Heritage – last years track debacle and match race debacle could not have earned a tick box

  5. Brendon says:

Has Phumelela kissed and made up with the Gauteng Provincial Government?

Seem like they have and now they are sponsoring the Summer Cup!

  6. Joe says:

Hilton . You are absolutely spot on. As owners how do we go about replacing management.and put the show back on the road?.

  7. Carry On Alice says:

The Grand Heritage is now scheduled in the first week in December 2019

07 VAAL WSB Heritage Consolation Handicap Non-Black Type All Horses Handicap 1475m R 135 000

  8. Steve Reid says:

To put things into perspective in 2010 the Summer Cup was run on 27 November for a stake of R2 000 000. The rand was trading at R7.146 /USD at close of business Friday 26 November 2010. That equated to a purse of $279876.85. This years Summer Cup also has a stake of R2 000 000. The Rand is trading at R15.21 / USD. This equates to a purse of $ 131 492.44. In USD terms this race has declined in value by a massive 53%.

No wonder that the big boys in the Cape are AWOL and all the Summer Cup has become is the strongest A Division handicap in Gauteng.

  9. Lou Syfer says:

If there were ever a race that did not deserve a GR1 rating, then it would be the Summer Cup. Steve is 100% this is a race that pits the best Gauteng has to offfer over 2000m. This year it will be a Mike de Kock benefit. The question everyone will be asking is will the mullet jump or not?
