Winning Ways – The Tiger Unleashed On YouTube

Podcasts introduced and content spiced up

The Winning Ways Show is now off Tellytrack. We have fielded many questions as to how this transpired.

So it’s time to go public with a letter to Sporting Post, write the Winning Ways Team.

Laff and James – best racing show in SA

The show was devised from discussions between James and Paul.

We wanted a TV show for racing enthusiasts, and initially we came up with “You be the Judge”.

When this proposal was put to Tellytrack, we were informed a few weeks later, that they were working on a show with the same name! Funny how alike great minds think , but it takes knowledge and personality to make these things work. “You be the Judge “  never made it.

Never let obstacles get in the way of passion and inspiration! So Paul and I started working on a TV show that would cater for horse racing fans.

Winning Ways was conceived.

We needed support and Gold Circle, with the late Raymond Rogers, afforded us the opportunity.

They agreed to produce the show and obtained a slot on Tellytrack.

High profile guests – like Steve Marshall and Devin Heffer – every week

We started looking for  sponsors and knocked on many doors. I had met Johnny  Stark at Pretoria Tattersalls years ago, and approached Interbet to sponsor us. Gary Piha, who was now a partner in Interbet, was my bookie in my winter raids to Cape Town.

We had a productive meeting in which they agreed to become our headline sponsor. We could not have hoped for a better group of people to work with.

It has been over a decade since our first show and Johnny and Gary and the team have promoted us from day one. We salute them for their unstinting support and their commitment` through some tough times.

Interbet sold a major portion of their business to Phumelela. A few years later Phumelela decided to take us off air, and as a result Interbet unfortunately  relinquished their headline sponsorship.

Magic Millions have been with us for many years and we are honoured with the partnership and to be able to keep Australian racing in the news. They are a superb sales company and, their product is up with the best in the world. We have had many other sponsors and we would like to thank them all for their support.

Where to from here?

This is where adversity has never got the better of Paul and me. We are both cancer survivors and true-blue lovers of horses and racing. We are also innovators. We believe in the show and so do our thousands of viewers who have given us the go ahead to find a solution.

YouTube is the answer.

But Winning Ways cannot survive on a weekly show on YouTube so we are morphing our YouTube Channel, “Winning Ways Show”, to include free racing podcasts which will give punters a preview of the days racing.

This is not a tipping service and anyone can view this on our Youtube channel.

James has been doing podcasts for years with Interbet on KZN racing and this is a natural progression for our channel.

We will also do magazine shows on current racing topics.

These will be entertaining and thought provoking and will include the views of many contentious people within the industry.

There are many others who would love to tell their stories and we will seek them out and give them the platform to do so.

Watch this space and follow the show that has kept you informed for the past decade.

This should be fun so please go to our Winning Ways Show on YouTube, subscribe and like so you will not miss out!

  1. Rod Mattheyse says:

A message to Paul Lafferty, stop being the last bastion for the futile barrier trials and ask Gold Circle for 20% of the savings to keep the show going!

  2. Brian says:

Not a bad idea, barrier trials are an absolute waste and I’d far rather the money go into the show.

i didn’t know Interbet had sold a slice to PG. Won’t be betting with them anymore and I think they’re great. Jut can’t support PG

  3. Brendon says:

Fully agree that barrier trials should go! It’s adds absolutely no justifiable value to the sport.

Additionally, the person/s who conceived GTV, together with their sorry excuse for presenters, also need to go.

The on-course presenters and the commentator are sufficient sources of information from the course. What role or purpose is GTV meant to fulfill?

A percentage saving from the failing and embarrassing production of GTV can be redirected to Winning Ways.

Well done Brian on your decision regarding Interbet.

  4. Steve Reid says:

With the chains unshackled this show has the potential to truly become something exceptional. All the best

  5. Rod Mattheyse says:

The Phumelela transaction was a long while ago.

Interbet is great but until Phum gets its act together – and I’m sure it’s possible – my account account will remain closed as I cannot stomach Phumelela in its current guise paying dividends from my custom.

Gary Piha , a good guy, explained that Phum have no direct management role. And kudos to them for keeping it that way, who knows what the situation would have been otherwise.

  6. Rod Mattheyse says:

Not really unshackled an operator director is at the helm, so many conflicts of interest, must need ulcer medication dealing with that.

  7. Steve Reid says:

Unshackled from the whims of a bald egocentric t-shirt seller and massive flop as a bookmaker. Your point regarding Laff has merit I did not consider that. The proof of the pudding will be in the eating so lets see who gets invited and what the appetite for the truth will be.

  8. Barry says:

Paul Lafferty is a director of Gold Circle. This affects the independence of the show because he cannot say anything that is against the interests of Gold Circle.

It is like having two wives. You dare not talk bad about any of them. If you do and they find out, you are sure to be scolded and to miss getting some nookie from the one you have upset. As a result, you say nothing negative about any of them even if you will be justified in saying it.

  9. Tony says:

Barrier trials should go. There is some good reason to have them for unraced two year olds only.

  10. Donald says:

Winning Ways will not survive unless it is on the horse racing channel Tellytrack !

As I have posted before sponsors demand T.V. exposure so James,s spin is just that and unless they can get the show back on Tellytrack it will fold in the not to distant future.

  11. James Goodman says:

    It most certainly wont fold!
We are in the process of sourcing players in the industry to come on the show and talk up about their concerns.
All will be accommodated for good debate.

  12. hilton witz says:

Great news Mr Goodman but as long as these players you sourcing are allowed to air their concerns about both operators …Lets see if you are willing to take the chance of cutting the hand that feeds you namely gold circle…I know you were not prepared to do that when approaching me earlier today.to be on your show..

  13. Donald says:

O.K. James — I admire you spirit and look forward to you proving me wrong as I did look forward to it on Monday evenings but now have to go to my computer to catch up on the show ?

It is a DISGRACE that an entertaining informative horse racing show such as yours is pulled from a horse racing T.V. program !
