Another Happy Double For Van Niekerk

22 winners for season

One man who has settled in well to the challenges of Hong Kong is Capetonian Grant van Niekerk who bagged a double at Happy Valley on Wednesday night and took his tally for the season to 22, with Jimmy Ting becoming the eighth trainer to have provided the jockey with a winner this term.

Grant returns on Good For You (Pic – HKJC)

Grant timed his drive with precision in the opener – section one of the Class 4 Kingston Handicap (1200m) – as he rousted the Me Tsui-trained Good For You on a late run to nick the spoils by a head.

Van Niekerk followed up two races later when he settled the Ting-trained Polymer Luck outside the leader, cruised to the front upon turning for home and drove hard for the line.

The Hong Kong International Sale graduate sealed his third career win at his 42nd outing.

    Easily South Africa’s greatest jockey

  2. Philip Norman says:

‘Easily South Africa’s greatest jockey’ …….. that is easily the stupidest comment I have seen in a long time.

    1. Editor says:

Everybody’s opinion welcome on this platform, Philip

  3. Brian says:

    Agreed, Ed.

  4. WILLIAM MILKOVITCH says:

    Mr. Philip Norman Sir Excellency,

My typing has never been up to standard ~

Easily South Africa’s greatest jockey in 2020

  5. Philip Norman says:

Really … 9 days into the New Year ?
What a ludricous comment …. get a life.

  6. Rian says:

Agree William, so far in 2020, he riding against some of best in world and proving himself, lots of near misses as well , hats off Grant you deserve it
Definately no competition from our ex Champ

  7. INNOCENT says:

A good and capable jockey he can’t be great he has never won the national jockey championship and the July

  8. Kay says:

Well done to Grant van Niekerk. Looking at the HK stats I find something very interesting in terms of jockey positions and their win percentages (at least the current season), unlike as here in our country. It appears that in Hong Kong the wins and percentages speak to one another. If you’re 1st on log your percentage is also the highest, if 2nd on log, your percentage is second best, and so forth.

When one looks closer at the Hong Kong Jockey Log the Top 5 (as at 08/1/2020) looks like this:
    1. J Moreira 55 wins (win % is 19,64)
    2. Z Purton 53 wins (win % is 19,20)
    3. K Teetan 34 wins (win % is 12,64)
    4. C Ho 26 wins (win % is 12,15)
    5. G van Niekerk 22 wins (win % is 11,87)
So in all probability the stats are correct on merit.

In South Africa the champion jock is seldom the champ on % wins. If you look at the last three seasons you find the following:

    2016/2017 Season Champion: A Delpech (win % of 22)
    Top 5 on win %
    1. A Marcus (win % of 25)
    2. A Delpech (win % of 22)
    3. G Lerena and P Strydom (both a win % of 21)
    5. R Fourie and A Domeyer (both a win % of 19)

    2017/2018 Season Champion: L Hewitson (win % of 13)
    Top 5 on win %
    1. A Delpech (win % of 26)
    2. A Marcus (win % of 25)
    3. G Lerena (win % of 21)
    4. A Domeyer (win % of 20)
    5. G van Niekerk (win % of 19)

    2018/2019 Season Champion: L Hewitson (win % of 14)
    Top 5 on win %
    1. A Marcus (win % of 30)
    2. G Lerena (win % of 24)
    3. R Fourie (win % of 22)
    4. A Domeyer (win % of 20)
    5. B Fayd’Herbe (win % of 19)

The current 2019/2020 Season – Leader at this point is W Kennedy (win % of 18)
The Top 5 as at 05/01/2020 on win %
    1. A Marcus (win % of 33)
    2. G Lerena (win % of 24)
    3. G Cheyne and A Domeyer (both a win % of 22)
    5. R Fourie (win % of 19)

  9. Van Niekerk says:

Grant Van Niekerk is A Very Good Jockey .to the Above U just Jealous ..

  10. Lee de lange says:

80 % of the comments are really unintelligent.
    Horseracing works as follow.
An very average jockey can do very well GIVEN GOOD HORSES TO RIDE..
Unfortunately only certain jockeys are favourites.
THE HORSES ARE THE REAL CHAMPIONS NOT THE JOCKEYS..
HEWiTSON SA CHAMPION NOW BOTTOM OF THE LOG HONG KONG .
    You cannot win on pony’s.

THE POINT IS . GIVE OUR HORSES THE RECOGNITION. NOT THE JOCKEYS..
    90 % HORSE. 10% jockeys.

  11. Deezo Snyman says:

Brilliant research, Kay. I think if we should comment on world class jockeys, the top jocks always have higher win percentages and win a higher percentage of graded races. We have seen many of our local jockeys ride at every racing centre, 7 days a week and even do the great trek to Borrowdale just to win the jockey championship. That in itself is an unbelievable feat. Frankie was recently voted the best jockey in the world, thanks to Enabled. Dougie White was a multiple Hong Kong champion but never received that accolade. Grant on the other hand is not there yet but given quality rides, he will reach those heights.

  12. Clinton says:

A great Jockey doesn’t have to win the championship or the July to be regarded as the best jockey of the year . Eg Jeff Loyd never won the July . Our Jockeys locally are rated as best jockey by number of races won doesn’t matter what their percentage is. Sometimes it takes that one ride that shows you the jockeys capabilities. Right now who does Marcus have has his completion in this country NOBODY
Van Niekerk well done with your success
If anyone wants to know what it takes to be a world class Jock watch Anton Marcus ride on Jay Peg in the Dubai duty free .

  13. Kevin G says:

Grant is my favorite jockey and he’s proved it in Hong Kong how brilliant he is.

  14. Cameron James says:

Agree with Mr. Milkovitch. This guy has great hands, but sometimes a bit too cavalier. His biggest asset….. Supremely confident in his ability.

Cecil, Justin’s words are ominous for tomorrow, the giant is only now awakening from his slumber. Frankie are you ready to have your heartbroken……. 😂😂😂😂

  15. Deezo Snyman says:

Justin always blows his own horn. You cannot be a great jockey if you have not won the country’s premier races. It is like catching tadpoles in the pond and claiming you a great fisherman.

  16. Cecil Pienaar says:

    Hey Cameron.

Oh yes, no doubt DIA was rusty last start.

    July double, tick
QPL double, tick? I think so…

What is your fancy for the Chairmans 2500M race..

  17. Frankie says:

Frankie Zackey…C J appreciate your concern and just for that I’ll shuffle Vardy into 3rd position as well for my saving quartets,,damm is this going to be a costly mistake…It took me 3 hours to convince myself that Vardy should be added into my saving quartets for 4th position now I’m being force to push him a position closer…anyway it’s not a sign of madness to add Vardy into my saving quartets in all fairness he’s really a smart horse I just feel at best he still needs to find 1to 2 lenghts on DIA that’s if DIA is on point which I have no dought he’ll be…1ST HAWWAAM 2nd Soqrat 3rd Do it Again 4th Rainbow Bridge…5th could be a flip of coin between Vardy and One World…Good Luck To All…Love you Hawwaam Love you to Frankie Zackey 😜😂

  18. Cameron James says:

Hi Cecil, In the Chairman’s Cup, if I had to back a horse would be Andre Nels Runner Chrome Yellow. Relatively unexposed at today’s distance which I think he relishes.

Plus he ran third to Charles 1st run out the maidens and a certain Vardy ran 2nd. Good value at 8 to 1. You must bear in mind the rest of the field have had many a chance, this fellow is still improving. Anyhoo hope I helped and good luck.

  19. Cecil Pienaar says:

    Thx CJ 👍

Look fwd to a great days racing, I guess many do.

  20. Ramesh says:

After reading all comments, I just want to wish all our jockeys safe riding wherever they may be. Anthony Delpech was my favorite jockey, remember him riding for Claudia Shaw booting home winners in the early days of his career.
