Oratorio Gelding Tops Derby Field

Tarry saddles Pomodoro filly

A field of thirteen will line up for the R1 million ARF Commemorative Gr1 Cape Derby in a new slot of 22 February at Kenilworth, after declarations were done earlier today.

Viva Rio is top rated in the field of 13 (Pic – Chase Liebenberg)

Mike de Kock, who won the race last year with Atyaab, has no runners, but Sean Tarry steps up to the plate with On My Mind and the only filly in the race, Invisible.

The latter, a daughter of Pomodoro, ran on steadily under Ryan Moore, for fourth in the recent CTS 1600.

Top-rated in the field is Glen Kotzen’s Viva Rio, a son of Oratorio, who ran a cracker for second in the Cape Guineas.

The race was first run as the Western Province Derby in 1925 over 2400m for a stake of £600 including £200 donated by the Jockey Club of SA when won by the filly Desert Born.

13 runners but Sir Michael is drawn 14. No number 3 draw

      Hi Reggie
      We spoke to the NRB.
Well picked up – they are compressing draws now and thus Sir Michael will go to 13 and the rest drop down 1.
