Cape Derby Winner Changes Hands

Will race in SA Champions Season

Dual Gr1 winner Eyes Wide Open has been sold by Vermaak Equine to race for Mauritian-based clients.

The Gujadhur  stable connections were congratulated in a short social media note,

The 5yo entire will be raced in the SA Champions Season and will remain in the care of his existing trainer, Glen Kotzen.

The Highlands bred Eyes Wide Open is a son of Dynasty (Fort Wood) out of the one time winning Live Your Dreams (Jallad).

He was the second highest priced lot at R850 000 when purchased at the KZN Sibaya Yearling Sale.

Racing in the Hattingh family’s Chrigor Stud silks, he won the Gr1 Premiers Champion Juvenile Stakes in 2017 at his third start and followed up with victory in the Gr2 Peninsula Handicap on to a big win in the Gr1 Cape Derby in 2018.

His next win was to come seventeen months later in the Greyville 1900 and he subsequently ran a decent fourth after trouble in running in the July.

His three feature runs this term, culminating with a poor effort in the Sun Met, have been little to write home about.

Poor horse… Deserves better than going to a crap
Place like Mauritius to race…. Dreadful

  2. WILLIAM MILKOVITCH says:

    Gavin, yes, poor horse.

I’ll gladly volunteer to take him for walks at Buffelsbaai.

  3. Michael Jacobs says:

The article says he will be raced in the Durban Winter season, but says nothing about going to Mauritius? Stays with his original trainer too, so it can’t be all that bad?

    1. Editor says:

      Good point Michael

  4. Cecil Pienaar says:

Geez, so this small island will have 3 good horses. White River, Undercover Agent and Eyes Wide Open.

If ever they meet in the same race, feel sorry for the 2nd and 3rd placed jockeys… If not local jocks, definite police investigation. LoL

  5. Cecil Pienaar says:

    😅 ok, two good horses.

I must read the articles properly

    Good Night all 😅

  6. Hi all
I find it quite sad re the comments made with regard to the sale of Eyes Wide Open. Racing in South Africa is going through extreme times as we all know.
Yes, Eyes Wide Open was a stallion prospect at one stage, with huge expectations but has unfortunately not fulfilled those expectations of late.
Sea Warrior, a gelding, trained by V Marshall, also went to Mauritius later in his career after winning the Guineas at Milnerton, and ended up winning everything there and is still talked about to this day!
Mauritian racing has revived many a horses career over the years.
    Good night Cecil

  7. Andrew Bon says:

What I understand is that Eyes will not Going to Mauritius. What part of that was hard to grasp.

  8. Pops says:

Beach Boy,are you there? Please clear up Eyes Wide Open’s future travel plans.

  9. Rian says:

What, part, Hard, grasp; all in one sentence, shoo man, what did I miss

  10. Cecil Pienaar says:

L😂L Rian, if only TV interviews and questions were one or 2 liners, we can see more racing…

  11. Rian says:

Hey Cecil, missed a meeting challenge but during week came second and made some free bucks, so putting in late run and sending next selection in early Sunday , take it easy

  12. Cecil Pienaar says:

    Well Done Rian 👍 rgds

  13. Irshaad says:
