Sizzling Punter’s Challenge Home Run

Two meetings left!

Has anyone with an ounce of competition in their soul missed the Hollywoodbets Punters’ Challenge?

After their Sizzling Summer Challenge for owners, trainers and jockeys followed up immediately with a punters’ competition which runs for the month of March.

Each KZN meeting offers punters a free chance to play for R5,000 and additionally another R50,000 for the top 20 players of the month bringing R105,000 to play for.

In a show that underscored the market’s appetite for a competition that would show who is punting of the turf, 2500 players signed up for day one!

Although respectable for competitions held before, the second round attracted an additional 1800 players, and 6500 punters selected their runners for Hollywoodbets Greyville meeting on March 8th (round 3) putting The Sizzling Punters’ Challenge into a class of its own.

On Wednesday March 18th the competition passed the ⅔ mark with punter VIVTOR in the lead.

Points are calculated by a points for the number of horses you beat in each race plus the winning odds if you select a winner.

There is a strong bias for landing the winner or alternatively showing a strong ability in picking competitive horses who just about win every race or beat lots home in big fields.

By the end of the Wednesday Hollywoodbets Greyville meeting, VIVTOR had a cumulative win and place percentage of 62.5% with 14 wins and 16 places from 48 race selections.

It was a tough meeting when Garth Puller’s MOUILLE POINT won at 44/1, but priced up at 100/1 at Hollywood the points allocated to the 46 punters who found him got them 121 each and the daily prizes too.  What can you do?

Amazingly 17 punters found 5 winners each but the cracker went to MEL47 who found 6 winners of the 8 races:71. TREAD SWIFTLY; 2. TRANSONIC; 3. SPANISH OASIS; 4. RAILTRIP; 5. COLLABRO; 6. NOT NOW PUSSYCAT; 7. POPOVA; 8. BACKPACKER

Punter SARVESH has chosen 19 winners from 48 races, an astounding 40% !  Showing his or her normal hit rate of 3 per meeting they found TREAD SWIFTLY, TRANSONIC and TEICHMAN, good enough to finish (445th) on the day (top 15%) and maintaining (7th) overall.

With everyone playing remotely, it could be that Sunday sees the competition ramp up a notch.

Everyone starts fresh for the “Daily” competition, but be warned that the veterans will have their strategy mapped out by now.  Perhaps the play is conservative in the bigger fields and reckless in the smaller fields?

But talk is cheap with after action merchants, the entry is open till 5 minutes before the first on Sunday 22nd March Hollywoodbets Greyville, and the lead is always in doubt till the fat lady sings.

To all those that are way off the pace, yours truly included, just remember,Good horses come from the back.

  2. Michael Jacobs says:

This competition clearly shows that punters enjoy a “points system” exotic bet in which you donot necessarily get “knocked out” in any leg, but remain in the running until the last race. You are also competing against your rival punters which always makes it more exciting and competitive. If the operators can devise an exotic that is based on this competition’s format they could be onto a winner. It could be an additional exotic, one that includes all the races on the card, selecting 1 horse per race.

    I cant even pick 1 winner a week..🙄

  4. Frankie says:

Frankie Zackey…Pick 6 Carryover again in KZN 😂 this NEW FORMAT in Computaform working extremely well for Hollywoodbets and Gold Cirlce…keep up the good work well done👏👏👏

Hello Frankie, naah, horses don’t know their odds, or number / draws, maybe weight 🤔

Hang in there buddy, 1 st April, back to normal ? 🤞

Helena, my stats for the Challenge are so poor, it’s now become embarrassing.

I have resorted to picking only 12 to 20-1 shots as I’m chasing my tail.

Making selections for 3 or so races is much easier than selecting for the whole card.

    Mel47 amazing picks,6 out of 8,well done,no easy feat,am catching but time running out😂

  8. Roy says:

I fully support this suggestion. Operators and Editor. Are you listening?

I fully support this suggestion. So operators need to take note. How do the respected Editor of Sporting Post plus the some of the people like Jay August and Richard Smith who understand the sport so well, feel about this. And the punters?

    1. Editor says:

Roy, Rob Scott and his team are considering Michael’s suggestion.
Not sure exactly what format the end product will take, but at least they are willing now to receive suggestions.

  10. Donald says:

Mr. Ed , here is a simple cost effective bet that Rob and his merry men can consider !

Bet Name : Call the card
    Bet Unit : R10
Bet Type : Pick one horse from the 1st to the last race.
    Payout : Place Payout
Winners : The person / persons with the largest place payout in total.
Scratchings : Taken after scratching time – no dividend.
: Taken before scratching time – dividend is average place payout.

    1. Editor says:

      Will pass that on Donald
So a ten-legged all on type PA?
      Or an exotic bet?

  11. Wes says:

There is a reader, who comments frequently on this forum, who has developed a product which will allow a full ticket to win the pool based on an 8 legged race card. Phumelela have been less than accommodating.

  12. Donald says:

No Ed , this type of bet is nothng like a P.A. as you are never out of the bet until the fat lady sings & therefore the punter has an interest until they hear her warming up !

    1. Editor says:

      Sounds like a winner!

  13. Rian says:

Sounds like a good bet Donald and well thought out, hardly ever play the PA but this can work

    1. Editor says:

Didnt we all get weaned via the PA on the Big 4 in Loop Street?
Those brown envelopes on a Saturday morning.
William’s old enough to remember, probably 🙂

    Oh Yes Mr.Editor,

The problem I had with the envelopes was that mine was full of coin. I could get it through the slot on the Box.

The Big 4 had the seven place bet, the 10c equivalent of the PA. Joey, Gavin & myself started filling in our 7 place bet forms in the last period on a Friday @ school.

    It was called Vocational Guidance.

    1. Editor says:

Lovely! It was the start of big things
Max jackpot payout was limited to R462-60. Always remembered that.

  15. Donald says:

The object of this simple bet is to balance a mixture of horses that could and should place with a couple of longer shots to enable you to boost your place payout to a possible winning one by the last race of the day !

Remember only one horse per race is permitted. No perms. If you want to take more horses you play a separate R10 line or lines and you cannot take more than a R10 unit for obvious reasons. Take as many R10 lines as you want.

My experience over the last couple of years is that the people who design the latest bets like ” quick mix ” , ” futsal ‘ , ” time bomb ” and many others make it too complicated and appear not to understand their markets who are basically horse racing people !
