Hewitson Gets July Green Light

Joey Soma aims at first win in big race

The fact that Turffontein-based trainers won two of the three Gr1 races at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Sunday is testimony to the world-class track management at the Gauteng racetrack training centre.

So says Joey Soma, who was echoing his colleague Paul Peter’s sentiments, after the ‘Turffontein two’ won the Daily News 2000 and Woolavington 2000 at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Sunday.

“If it wasn’t for the colour of the turf, you wouldn’t know it is winter at Turffontein,” said the veteran Soma, who confirmed that his Gr1 Daily News 2000 winner would be prepared out of his home base of Turffontein for the Vodacom Durban July.

“He never enjoyed the Cape and even when we got to Summerveld last week, his personality changed. I need him to be happy and he is a gem at home at Turffontein. So we won’t take any chances. We will go back to Joburg on Wednesday and have his July gallop up there. We will come back to Durban for the big race,” he said.

He was pleased to report that Drakenstein-sponsored SA champion jockey Lyle Hewitson has been booked for the big race ride.

Joey Soma – pleased as punch

Hewitson will ride Got The Greenlight at a likely 53kgs.

Got The Greenlight sauntered to his second Gr1 victory at Hollywoodbets Greyville and third career Gr1 overall when winning the Daily News 2000 under Bernard Fayd’Herbe.

He beat the pacy Padre Pio by 1,50 lengths in a time of 125,80 secs.

The Daily News is a traditional July pointer and Joey Soma, who astutely bought  him for a now modest R110 000 off the 2018 CTS April Yearling Sale, is looking for his first success in the big race.

The colt took his earnings to R1 938 000 with his sixth win with five places from twelve starts.

Got The Greenlight races in a partnership of Dayalan Chinsammy, Hassen Adams and Joey Soma.

Bred by Nadeson Park Stud, he is by Varsfontein sire Gimmethegreenlight (More Than Ready) and is out of the one-time winner Command Chi (Commands).

I love Got The Greenlight. I call him Go go Green when I shout him home. His win on Sunday was brilliant. Even with this, I worry to back him for a win never mind a place in the VDJ. The stable statistics are not in his favour. The stable has had about 10 wins in the past 12 months runs and four of them have been won by Go go Green. Thank the Lord that it is the horse that is running the race and not the stable. I will be watching and hoping that Go go Green flashes past the line as a winner. Go go Green.

I’ll put my money on Joe Soma any day of the week,,when it comes to mixing it up with the best in SA can this Leb Boy train a horse,,he’s one of very few horseman that’s still around..the man has had limited horses during his career and certainly knows how to place his horses and has proven himself at the highest level with very cheap and mediocre horses…Joe has never had a big string even when MJ was around,, he done exceptionally well for the man,,if one has to compare to what other trainers had in stock from MJ and that cost millions Joe must then come up trumps for achieving what he had achieved,,yes Joe has a handfull of winners yearly as he made it clear to the public but the difference is he makes it count when he puts the money down,, there’s no mistakes my pal…Christo Bothas if i need to sum up your comment and give you a answear I’ll advise you to rather stick to rugby and not horseracing,, Christo if you want we could always talk about this topic around your 3Lt Ford Cortina Bakkie while the braai is going and not forgetting that Bottle of Brandy.. pls my boetie this is a horseracing site

😂 haven’t heard that one in a while
    3 L Ford, 2 L Cola and 1 L brandewyn

Mr Soma have a beautiful horse here, my opinion, probably the most consistent of the 3yr old boys. Oh yes and he likes Greyville. Nice early call on the July Jock, let’s not forget he is the current and 2 time Champ. 👍🏼

Hope Bernard gets a good ride as well. Top Jock, knows how to win the big one’s.

With all due respect mr Christo Bothas under estimate Joey Soma and his yard at your peril. He has been around as long as the sport itself . Imagine how much attention that one special horse gets from.him. undivided!!

  6. Denzel says:

Which other jockeys have been booked for July? I know Warren K and Lyle are but who else and on what horses

  7. Cecil Pienaar says:

    Good Morning.

Hey Cameron James, CJ, where are you, you fully compliant 🤔

I note Superman is riding DIA, Richard on Belgarion and Grant on Bunker Hunt. Hope you got on at 25/2

I thought Vardy finished best of all this w/e, 10/1
There is a Cowboy in CT that must be smiling, also our shrewdie William

Frankie, what makes you think that Christo Bothas would be better off at rugby. Is it because of his name. Pathetic of you to judge a person by their name.

Mr Ed, so Frankie’s post got the green light even though there is evidence of some culture stereotype being used ?
Now that we are supposed to use our full names, does this enable people to assume our culture, beliefs, preferences etc. ?

    1. Editor says:

      Hi Sherwin
We didnt see the suggested stereotype

  9. Frankie says:

    Frankie Zackey…
Sherwin so it’s fine that Christo can be so insulting towards Mr Soma..Sherwin I’m guessing you’ve had a bad day at the races and you now looking to take your frustration out on someone,, unfortunately for you you found the wrong person..i suggest that you pull yourself towards yourself and get a life

Hey Cecil, ek wag vir n Reenboog…..

  11. DEAN DEMONT says:

I think when it comes down to percentage of runners in group races and winning them, Joey Soma is in a league of his own. From Special Preview to Got The Greenlight, he has had probably entered 15 group races and won 10.. not another trainer can achieve that. Frankie you are 1 million percent right.. pound for pound, Joey is tops.. I could also train 300 horses in a season and win a few group races, but training a handful of horses over the decades and produce what Joey Soma has, is simply in another league.

  12. Frankie says:

    Frankie Zackey…
Christo Bothas pls correct me if i’m wrong in saying that you obviously never caught the P6 or Jackpots today with Joe Soma’s horse African Adventure having won the 5th race..I call him Go Africa,, so i was shouting Go Africa Go Africa because i’m born in South Africa 😂 we did clubit from frees to two’s 😂shame man i promised da grooms a nice pot of curry after Go Africa Go Africa won,, but unfortunately my mate Sherwin is not feeling good…anyways Good Luck with your winner Mr Joe Soma,, oh yes i’m hoping you took the double with Theravada as discussed we said 8/1 was a massive price for the double
