Lockdown Level 1 Remains – For Now, Anyway!

President slams travel ban countries

Horseracing and the broader business community breathed a sigh of relief on Sunday evening with President Cyril Ramaphosa announcing that South Africa will remain on lockdown level 1 for the time being, despite exponential increases in cases of the new Omicron variant.

President Cyril Ramaphosa – slams other countries

Slamming those countries that had imposed travel bans without any scientific basis on South Africans, Mr Ramaphosa urged the nation to continue to follow the basic new normal behaviour, which includes sanitisation and washing of hands – and the now legal requirement of wearing a mask over the mouth and face.

He also implored those that hadn’t already vaccinated, to take up the opportunity for both themselves and in the interests of their fellow South Africans. He hinted that mandatory vaccination was being explored and proposals would be presented to a presidential task team.

Attendance at racecourses in Gauteng, the Eastern Cape and Western Cape is currently only permitted for fully vaccinated individuals.

Gold Circle, who are the racing operator in KwaZulu-Natal, have not made any public move in regard to enforcing vaccination requirements at their two holiday province racecourses.
