33 Line Up In Cambridgeshire

Newmarket first due off @ 14h15 on Saturday

Saturday sees the running of the Bet365 Cambridgeshire Handicap (16h40) at Newmarket.

33 runners will jump away over the straight nine-furlongs, all chasing the huge first prize of £90195.

With all the recent rain the track conditions are heavy, so punters will be well advised to look out for those runners with winning form on soft and heavy ground.

The super shrewd Grand National-winning trainer Emmet Mullins raids from Ireland with This Songisforyou. The six-year-old was solidly supported in the ante-post market on Monday slashed into 7-1 joint-favourite from 20’s.

He’s shortened further during the week into 5/1 and does look a contender taking into account his easy win at the Curragh in a premier handicap. That ten-furlong form was franked as the fourth placed Soaring Monarch subsequently won the premier handicap at the Listowel harvest festival on Monday. The only concern is whether he will handle very soft ground.

Liberty Lane heads the weights, but this course and distance winner is very much in the mix considering his good latest run at Doncaster and he will be better suited by underfoot conditions.

Godwinson has won twice on good to soft ground including his last start at Goodwood in August. Trained at Newmarket by the in-form William Haggas and nicely drawn on the stands side, he is another with strong claims.

Roi De France a well-bred Sea The Stars three-year-old was the original market leader from the Gosden stable. Champion elect Oisin Murphy rides and he also looks well drawn near the stands rail.

However, he has only raced on good to firm ground, so preference is for Balmacara another three-year-old who has proven himself on soft ground. The son of New Bay, trained by Eve Johnson Houghton bring solid form to the contest and at around 12/1 is a good each-way alternative.

Also on the card, Prix Morny winner Whistlejacket, the mount of Ryan Moore, faces seven rivals as he bids for more Group 1 glory in the Juddmonte Middle Park Stakes (16h00).

Dangers include the Godolphin colt Shadow Of Light, but Whistlejacket has proven Group 1 form and enjoys cut in the ground.

Earlier, eight juvenile fillies contest the Juddmonte Cheveley Park Stakes (15h25) in what looks a real quality event.

Gr2 Lowther heroine Celandine and the winner of the Gr2 Queen Mary at Ascot, Leovanni are both double figures in the market headed by two unbeaten Irish raiders.

The sponsors are represented by the Kodiac filly Babouche. She was last seen winning the Gr1 Phoenix Stakes impressively last month beating the boys, including Whistlejacket who was second, by nearly two-lengths.

The Ger Lyons trained filly takes on the might of Ballydoyle who have selected Lake Victoria as their sole representative. This Frankel filly has won all three of her starts over seven-furlongs, including the Gr1 Moyglare Stud Stakes two weeks ago.

The drop in trip gives the advantage to Babouche who is selected to stay unbeaten.

The Enchanting Currency Of Fate

It is eerie to think that there would have been no Siren’s Call, Sound Of Warning, or for that matter Call To Unite, had fate not decreed that Enchanted Cove follow her dam to South Africa, and that Peter de Beyer had the foresight to return Elusive Fort back home from the States as well!
