PE filly loses it in last stride

Multiple SA champion Piere Strydom won the R1 million Gr1 Computaform Sprint for the fifth time this century when he rode a finely judged race to get the Cape raider Pacific Trader home for Brett Crawford under the lights at Turffontein on Saturday.

It’s unbelievable to think that Strydom is jetting off to Mauritius soon to seek his fortune as a result of a lack of support on the home front. The veteran’s genius judgement of pace and strength in the finish was all that stood between Yvette Bremner and a second victory in the race after Copper Parade – coincidentally ridden by Striker – won it in 2014.

Strydom had Pacific Trader out the stalls quickly and he tracked the lightning fast Princess Rebel all the way. At the 200m mark Strydom hesitated as he seemed to want to go in but then opted to come outside of the little chestnut speed machine.

Producing his peak career performance at his first start here, the 6-1 Pacific Trader responded and nabbed the 36-1 Princess Rebel on the line to win by a short head in a time of 56,66 secs.

Anton Marcus got the 3yo Chimichuri Run into the race late and he was just over a length back in third, with Yvette Bremner completing the quartet with longshot Quinlan sneaking into fourth.

Van Halen (4 lengths) and Trip To Heaven (4,25 lengths) ran decent races after losing the initiative at the start.

Strydom, whose previous Computaform Sprint winners include JJ The Jet Plane (2008), Private Jet (2009), Shea Shea (2012) and Copper Parade (2014), pointed out in the post-race interview that this race was won and lost at the start.

Piere Strydom – great ride

Brett Crawford, who was saddling his second Computaform Sprint winner after the outstanding Laisserfaire won in 2002, said that Pacific Trader didn’t do well in KZN last season.

“So this was always his mission after the Cape summer season and I must thank the owners, whose first Gr1 it was, as well as Mike and Mathew de Kock for accommodating my horses from Wednesday,” he added.

Bred by Ascot Stud, Pacific Trader is by Sail From Seattle (Gone West) out of the Cape Cross mare, Agbalat – an unraced daughter of Irish Gr2 2000m winner Tarfshi (Mtoto).

He was bought for R150 000 by trainer Brett Crawford on the 2016 CTS Emperors Palace Select Yearling Sale and took his earnings with his first group victory to R967 313. This was his fifth win and he has clocked up 4 places from 11 starts.

I dont think that is a fair assumption of Gavin Lerena. Lerena can battle it out with the best . I think the reason for him not riding Hawaam was due to contractual obligations . It doesnt matter if you win by an inch or a mile a win is a win . Lerena is one of the best riders in the country .
    Please can editor clarify

To say that Marcus is probably the best Jockey in the WORLD is really beyond me…
To actually say he is the best Jockey in South Africa is also pushing it a bit but thats only my observation after 50 years of racing
Strydom, to me will be my best of those riding but many will disagree but the stats tell the story for now..
Great ride Mr Strydom and and equally amazing ride by Diego

That is totally unfair Deezo. The switch was forced. If you need to know why check the facts contained in this forum before you open your mouth with utter BS

Anyone would have won in hawaam. Umm it’s not like it was a short head or neck it won by margins. So saying Lerena could not have won on it is a blind man. Such ludicrous comments.. Anton gets the better rides and is a top class jockey Best in the world why is he still here and not snapped up if he’s the best to ride overseas. Pierre had proved his worth in the game . Anton., Pierre and a few other jocks all the same age Anton gets the cream of crop right now.. Good luck to him. Yet he’s a senior jock. One of the best in the world right now is Zac PURTON.ONE OF THE BEST. Gavin Lerena would never ride so many winners if he was average Stupid statement to say

  5. Farad Aziz says:

Unfair Assessment , One has to re-enage with SA trainers , Why are there so many trainers giving Mr Marcus choice rides in the Grade ones. Are stable jockeys something of the past. Is freelancing a better option for jockeys. Surely if the season continues this way , we can put the form books away and Ride along with Mr Marcus , and as punters im sure we should be happy to say long may it continue. Only problem is the average Midweek meeting becomes dull as everything Mr Marcus Rides tops the boards…………………Determining SA jockeys on Classic rides , One should look at the Duel between Potomac and Model Man in the Daily News of Yesteryear and think about how good Feix was. But Mr B Marcus became a champion in Hong Kong for Many years. All jockeys are champions , if they dont make up the field no one will be crowned the ultimate champion….Have a fun and profitable Champion Season .

  7. RG says:

Anton Marcus has undoubtedly been a great jockey during his career. However on several occasions, he is extremely disrespectful to the racing public and punters as after riding a winner, he refuses to show up post race to discuss the winning ride. This leaves the Teletrack
presenter on his/her own to tell the viewers and punters about his ride. The racing public need to informed as much as possible about information on forthcoming races as they spend their hard earned cash on various bets.

Gavin Lerena is totally different in this regard and is always forthcoming and respectful. Also, I think to say that Gavin would possibly not have achieved the same riding Hawwaam is ridiculous as he is an extremely accomplished rider and champion.

    1. Editor says:

RG , we have outlined reasons in past as to why Anton does not always do his post-race interviews

  8. Speedyvar says:

On 24 April 2019, Jockey Anton Marcus was charged with a contravention of Rule 62.2.7..After pleading guilty Marcus was given a suspension from riding in races for a period of seven days. One may ask then why was he allowed to ride Eyes Wide Open in The Sledgehammer four days after
And then six days after he rides Hawwaam in THE PREMIER’S CHAMPIONS CHALLENGE (Grade 1)
Word has it he told The NHA he would take his straf every Monday over the next 7 weeks.
