Superlative Flies To Win The Guineas

Son of Twice Over stamps his authority

Justin Snaith and Anton Marcus joined forces at Kenilworth on Saturday to win the R750 000 Gr1 Cape Guineas for the first time since 2010 and 2011 respectively, when the handsome Twice Over colt Double Superlative flew up late in the race to collar his game stablemate, Pomp And Power.

The Snaith’s last Cape Guineas win was with Solo Traveller, while Marcus piloted Variety Club to victory for Joey Ramsden in 2011.

Racing in the silks of KZN owner Nic Jonsson, Double Superlative  came in under the radar in the alternate first leg of the SA Triple Crown on Saturday after just four starts, including a post-maiden fourth in a small field in the Cape Classic.

While Pomp And Power was the most proven of the Snaith trio, there was plenty of talk about Grant van Niekerk’s ride Pacaya, but the son of Trippi was never in the hunt and finished in midfield.

“I think it was Jono Snaith who phoned me and asked if I wanted to win the Guineas. I jumped at the chance and must be honest and say that I didn’t do much of the work on him. The pace was reasonable and while the draw was always a concern, it worked out well,” said Marcus, who is now well over his century mark of Gr1 winners.

With Mr Master Starter was slow off, it was Pomp And Power who grabbed the early lead ahead of stablemate Double Superlative. Despite the positives of the Kenilworth home straight, and all the opportunities it gives those that come from off the gallop, the top two were in front and that was the way things were to stay, with a late swap.

Pomp And Power continued to gallop powerfully into the home run, with Trip Of Fortune being switched out and running – before he appeared to strike the rail.

But Marcus had matters under control and the former champion even grabbed a chance to salute late as Double Superlative (10-1)  went past Pomp And Power as he charged home to win the prestigious classic by 1,25 lengths in a time of 99,29 secs.

Craig Bantam was a late call-up in the place of Smanga Khumalo on the Concorde Cup winner Pomp And Power (16-1), and the young rider did everything but win the race, as the son of Vercingetorix stayed on resolutely for second.

Cosmic Highway (6-1) was the first of the Kannemeyer trio home, with the son of Gimmethegreenlight finishing smartly from his wide for third, just ahead of the even wider drawn Zapaitallas (10-1) who ran fourth.

Glen Kotzen enjoyed a race of mixed fortunes with his quartet. Never Ending Rain (100-1) ran a gallant fifth, but his other three filled the bottom ranks.

Described as a horse that is something of a ringer for the stable’s July double winner Do It Again, Double Superlative was bred by Patrica Devine Investments from Klawervlei sire Twice Over (Observatory) out of the Jet Master five-time winner, Come Fly With Me.

He has won 2 races with 3 places from his 5 starts for stakes of R539 600.

Owner Nic Jonsson apparently mandated the Snaiths to buy up all the Twice Over progeny as they are generally regarded as undervalued.

Twice Over has two sons entered in the 2022 Gr1 Cape Town Met and eight lots on the 2022 Cape Premier Yearling Sale.

    THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED:

    a) An Inquiry will be held to establish why UNIVERSAL (C Zackey) was carried outwards and made contact with TRIP OF FORTUNE (A Domeyer) which resulted in both horses becoming severely unbalanced and TRIP OF FORTUNE (A Domeyer) making contact with the outside running rail while both horses were racing on the outside of DOUBLE SUPERLATIVE (A Marcus). In view of this report the veterinary surgeon was requested to examine TRIP OF FORTUNE (A Domeyer).
    b) In view of the performance of MR MASTER STARTER (B Fayd’Herbe) the veterinary surgeon was requested to examine this gelding
    c) DOUBLE SUPERLATIVE, the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer SJ Snaith was advised. (TJ)

  2. Neill de Bruyn says:

Hi mr Ed, how many dual winners of the Queens Plate and Met has there been in the same year?
Bet there’s never been a 3 year old winning the Guineas, QP and Met.
At your leisure, its a lazy Sunday ! !

    1. Editor says:

      Will check

  3. WILLIAM MILKOVITCH says:

Don’t worry….Horse Chestnut obviously won all three.

His win in the Queens Plate was so swift that the official photographer wasn’t even ready.

  4. WILLIAM MILKOVITCH says:

Neill, just remember in the ‘old days’ the Richelieu Guineas was run in the middle of February.

Therefore, the Cape Treble was never on…

  5. Neill de Bruyn says:

It was Badgers Coast the year after Horse Chestnut. Also de Kock. Sorry !

  6. WILLIAM MILKOVITCH says:

The owners of Never Ending Rain must surely be looking for better days to come. Out of a Dynaformer mare, this gelding might be better over further, come June 2022.

I don’t know what to make of Pacaya. Stone last or 2nd last into the straight & running on from maybe more than 12 lengths back to finish 6l’s off ? Does he need 3200m, a break from racing or a “kick in the jack” ?

I think Cosmic Highway & Zapatillas showed who they are, I doubt if they are 1800m+ horses.

Double Superlative must be a contender for the Daily News 2000 in June.

My goodness, Pomp & Power ran his heart out.

Punters, the 1st and 2nd horses throughout the race finished 2nd & 1st, slightly clear of the rest.

  7. Trevor Fortune says:

Whilst Double Superlative’s win in the Guineas is full of merit, the way that Pomp and Power shifted ground, ultimately changed the outcome of the race. Anton Marcus moved his mount standside because of this but across Universal, who then shifted sharply onto Trip of Fortune. Universal was running on nicely without threatening the frontrunner at that stage, but the Bass-Robinson runner was starting to unleash a powerful finish at the time. This for me was the unlucky horse in the race and obviously a bitter pill to swallow for the Aldo and the Bass team given that this race still eludes them. Congratulations to the Snaith team…moving forward, Trip of Fortune will have more opportunities to prove his worth but although Cosmic Highway came home really well, the jury will be out on his ability to over ground.Personally I believe he will do well…

  8. Dev Govender says:

Hi Neill, the 3yo treble has never been done as far as I’m aware but the Met/Queens Plate double has been done a few times. Pocket Power 3 times, Politician twice, and then Wolf Power, Mark Anthony, Empress Club and London News come to mind. I’m sure I’ve missed a few (maybe Foveros?) but memory is not quite what it was!

  9. Geoff Logan says:

I would love to know the reason for the review and subsequent result reversal in the last at Kenilworth on Saturday.
Is there a stipes report available.
If it’s because Fourie’s mount jumped half a length in front of the field then it’s ridiculous. Fourie gathered him immediately and he gained no advantage.

      THE STARTER REPORTED:

      a) SERVICE ACE (R Munger) was slow into stride.

      THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED:

      a) Leaving the 400m I WANT IT ALL (G van Niekerk) was carried out by SAINT WEST (D Schwarz) which rolled out away from DUBAI LIGHTS (C Bantam) which rolled out away from SENSO UNICO (R Fourie) which shifted out and had to be straightened.
      b) At the 100m I WANT IT ALL (G van Niekerk) rolled in slightly and had to be straightened.
      c) From the 50m I WANT IT ALL (G van Niekerk) was carried out and bumped by SENSO UNICO (R Fourie) approximately five strides before the finish. Jockey G van Niekerk (I WANT IT ALL) called a race review regarding this incident which was followed by an Objection being lodged by Jockey G van Niekerk, the rider of the 2nd placed horse I WANT IT ALL, against the winner SENSO UNICO (R Fourie) on the grounds of interference in the latter stages. The Objection Board, after giving due regard to the evidence put forward, reviewing the race recording and considering the margin of 0,05 of a length between the two horses concerned, was of the opinion that I WANT IT ALL (G van Niekerk) would have finished ahead of SENSO UNICO (R Fourie) had this incident not occurred and therefore upheld the Objection.
      d) Jockey K de Melo reported that he felt something amiss with GIMMIE A STAR. The veterinary surgeon was requested to examine this colt.
      e) SENSO UNICO, the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer VH Marshall was advised. (TJ)

  10. WILLIAM MILKOVITCH says:

Anton Marcus, IF it comes to pass @ the Inquiry that you have a case to answer to possible neglectful riding, here is a ‘passage’ that might assist You.

A scratch golfer hits his ball 300 yards straight down the fairway, it hits a sprinkler & veers off into the woods. He finds the ball, but trees surround it. He is pissed, says what the hell, grabs his 9-iron & does a ‘grip & rip’.

It bounces off a tree back at the golfer’s head & kills him.

He arrives in heaven, and God himself is at the Pearly Gates to greet him. Looking up his records, God sees that the guy golf’s and says, “Are you any good?”

The golfer looks at God and says, “I got here in two, didn’t I?”
