Lady Macan – Oaks hopeful takes her next step

South African interest will be high in Saturday’s big Group I card at Rosehill in Sydney Australia where the Where’s That Tiger filly Lady Macan runs in the 2000m Vinery Stud Stakes for trainer David Payne and jockey Glyn Schofield.

The $400 000 Vinery Stud Stakes is a GrI set-weight race for three-year-olds fillies and is one of the key lead-up races to the GrI Australian Oaks.

Acclaimed winners of the race in recent times include Norzita (2013), Mosheen (2012), Faint Perfume (2010), Miss Finland (2007) and Serenade Rose (2006).

Bred by well known SA businessmen Larry Nestadt and Bernard Kantor, the 3yo Lady Macan will be ridden by former SA jockey Glyn Schofield. She has a wide draw to overcome, but the track is a fair one and she will have every chance to do so.

She won at her third start in the hands of another name familiar to us in Jeff Lloyd, and is stakes placed. She is out of the Gr1 winning Last Tycoon mare, Lady Jakeo and was sold for $80,000 on the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Where’s That Tiger

Lady Macan’s sire Where’s That Tiger is managed by Allan Bloodlines and stood his first season here at The Alchemy in 2014.

A narrow Gr3 UAE Guineas runner-up for Mike De Kock, Where’s That Tiger, campaigned in the colours of Larry Nestadt and Bernard Kantor.

He started his racing career with champion trainer Aiden O’Brien and won on debut.

He raced as a newly turned 3yo in the UAE Guineas for Mike de Kock. He missed what would have been his first Gr3 win by a whisker behind Argentine-bred Gold For Sale.

Following the Dubai campaign, Where’s That Tiger found his way to Australia, to be trained by Gai Waterhouse. He won a barrier trial in great style, but never made it to the racetrack proper again and was retired to stud.

Where’s That Tiger is by super-sire Storm Cat, his dam a full sister to Kentucky Derby winner Fusaichi Pegasus (by Mr P.), out of a full sister to Preakness winner Pine Bluff (by Danzig), and the next dam by Halo. All of which, incidentally, makes him a full brother in blood to Summerhill stallion Brave Tin Soldier, their dams being full sisters.

David Payne

David Payne was apprenticed to Herman Brown Snr at age 15 and twice became SA Champion jockey before weight forced him to hang up his boots and go into training after riding 399 winners.

He commenced his training career in 1972 at the age of only 24.

An early  career highlight for Payne was his association with In Full Flight, a colt he trained to victory in six Gr1 races including the Champion Stakes and the Queen’s Plate

In Full Flight took all before him, having 19 starts between two and four years of age for 16 wins.

Training in South Africa for over 30 years, Payne achieved a feat rarely matched by any other – training the winners of every Gr1 race held in South Africa.

David Payne – a major success in Australia today

Having also trained the winners of 100 individual Gr1 races in South Africa, he is the only person to ride and train a winner of South Africa’s prestigious Durban July Handicap.

He moved to Australia in 2002 with his family and was based initially at Royal Randwick before moving to Rosehill Gardens.

His first Australian Gr1 winner was three-year-old Zabeel filly Unearthly who won the Flight Stakes over 1600m at Randwick.

English-born jockey Chad Schofield is graduate of the SA Jockey Academy and rode in South Africa with great success for many years before relocating to Australia.

His son Chad followed in his Dad’s professional footsteps and won the Cox Plate in 2013 to become a household name.
