Public voting in the official Equus polls opened today and will close on Friday 12 August.

This year for the first time the equine categories for the Equus awards will be decided on three elements: a points system for performance, a vote by an expert panel and a vote by the public.

Captain’s Ransom (Richard Fourie) charges clear to win the Gr1 Mercury Sprint (Pic – Chase Liebenberg)

The public are now able to visit the Equus website to vote.

The system is based on the UK’s Cartier Racing Awards.

The nominees from which the panelists and Joe Public can choose were listed according to the number of points they gathered in Group and Listed races.

In a readers poll being conducted by the Sporting Post for the highly debated SA Horse Of The Year Award, the popular mare Captain’s Ransom has netted 45% of votes ahead of our unique option of a tie – Jet Dark / Captain’s Ransom share title- which has netted 25%.

Jet Dark to win it on his own is a third choice at 22%, ahead of the 6% garnered by impressive Hollywoodbets Durban July winner, Sparkling Water.

Click and have your say via a vote in our SP poll – results to be announced on Monday 22 August.
