The Winter Challenge is an innovative series designed to give the average handicapper a chance to compete for larger stakes.

It was run from 22 January to 25 May, with three finals – over 1200m, 1600m and 2000m – being run at Greyville this Saturday.

Each final carries a stakes of R200 000 and Trainers have a great chance to earn an incentive bonus.

Benchmarks for the finals: 1 200m – 74 = 52kgs, 1 600m – 74 = 52kgs, 2 000m – 70 = 52kgs, with no restriction on the top weight to be carried.

Gold Circle reserves the right to reduce the weight scale if at declaration stage the top weight is greater than 60kgs and the bottom weight greater than 52kgs.

In order to qualify to participate in the finals, horses could earn points by running in all races, excluding Features, Maiden Plates & Maiden Juvenile Plates, in KZN during the series.

Points could be earned provided that the nett Merit Rating of a horse (after WFA Allowance) may not exceed 94 in the race in which it participates.

A horse that won a Maiden race in KZN needed to run in one further qualifying race between 22 January and 25 May to qualify to be entered to run in any final.

A trainers incentive bonus of R50 000 is payable to Trainers whose pre-entered horses finished in the top 3 positions in the final log on 26 May 2016 and is broken down as follows:

1st: R28 500 • 2nd: R14 000 • 3rd: R7 500

These prizes will be awarded to the recipients on Saturday.
