The season has started off for us not with a barrow full of winners but with the annual stallion day being held at Klawervlei
A feud over the rights of out-of-province trainers to run satellite yards in KZN continues despite a ruling made by Gold Circle that allows existing satellite yards to reapply for boxes with restrictions.
I am writing my response both to Mr Thiselton and the Sporting Post as I believe my comments would more likely be binned in the National paper due to the restrictions placed on their journalists.
The subjective nature of the task facing the Equus Awards selection panel is bound to lead to criticism and differing opinion. All we ask for is a credible and professional approach by those tasked with the responsibility.

Regarding Tony Mincione’s letter which asked why there should be a connection between a bookmakers business and the contribution towards owner’s costs, bookmakers currently have no obligation to pay the operators more than 3% of winning bets.
Where democratic South Africans are actively campaigning against the Protection of Information Bill and standing squarely alongside our journalists in their quest to tell the truth and to be allowed to deliver balanced news, I can only say “shame on you Mr Thiselton, shame on you Gold Circle and shame on The Mercury”.
The horseracing Operators, Gold Circle and Phumelela, have each tendered written submissions to Parliamentary Committee of the DTI in support of a need to “level the playing fields”, identified by a Gambling Review Commission
