Joao ‘Magic Man’ Moreira tops the charts

Recordbreaking SA Apprentice Lyle Hewitson, who has seven rides on this afternoon’s Fairview card, features on the latest Longines World’s Best Jockey standings.

Hewitson, who only  last week broke a longstanding South African apprentice win record previously held by Gavin Lerena and Michael Roberts, finds himself in good company!

The South African riders in order of standing are Anton Marcus, Grant van Niekerk, Piere Strydom , Lyle Hewitson, Aldo Domeyer and Corne Orffer.

Brazillian-born Hong Kong champion Joao ‘Magic Man’ Moreira tops the charts, while 2017 winner Hugh Bowman is in fifth position.

The Longines World’s Best Jockey award is given to the jockey who has achieved the most points in the 100 highest-rated Group 1 and Grade  1 races as established for the year by the Longines World’s Best Racehorse Rankings Committee.

The scoring will incorporate races from 1st December of the previous year until 30th November of the current year.
