Durban July 2019 – The Betting Opens!

Big race is on 6 July

South Africa’s leading bookmakers Hollywood have set the 2019 Gr1 Vodacom Durban July betting pace and have published the opening ante-post market on the R4,25 million contest which will be run at Greyville on 6 July.

Rainbow Bridge – early favourite (Pic – Chase Liebenberg Photography)

While his future may yet well hang in the balance given the sad passing of his owner Chris Gerber, Eric Sands’ Gr1 Sun Met winner Rainbow Bridge tops the early bird boards at 9-2. The son of Ideal World was an impressive winner of the Cape flagship last month and with top jockey Anton Marcus set to stick with the ride, he will have plenty of supporters.

Joint second favourites are the unexposed De Kock import Buffalo Bill Cody and Met runner-up, Do It Again. The latter’s trainer Justin Snaith has already intimated that he may give the July a miss with the dashing Twice Over gelding – who won this race in 2018.

Hawwaam – set to set record straight in SA Classic (Pic – JC Photos)

Mutliple 3yo stakes winner Hawwaam is the only other possible contender currently in single figure odds. The son of Silvano was runner-up behind National Park in the Gr2 Gauteng Guineas last Saturday after a ride that has attracted plenty of debate in the public forums and which saw the Stipes call jockey Gavin Lerena in.

His conqueror in the Guineas, EP star Naional Park, is quoted at 20-1.

Kabelo’s Ride Of The Day!

Just a month after celebrating their maiden Gr1 success together, trainer Robyn Klaasen and owner Stincky Pooe raised a toast to jockey Kabelo Matsunyane who produced the ride of his life to keep the favourite Purple Pitcher rolling down the long Turffontein straight to score a heart-stopping victory in the TAB Gr1 SA Derby
