Derby Day Countdown

Quite a tricky Pick 6 on cards

While Phumelela have already announced a R1 million Pick 6 carryover for the Turffontein 6 March Classic Day meeting on Monday, there was no news of the major exotic bet carryover for Saturday’s Cape Derby meet – the final big showday of the 2020/21 Cape Summer Season.

The meeting, which brings the curtain down on a dramatic and enjoyable Cape Summer, has only managed to attract 98 runners (including 4 reserves) over the nine races, at an average of just over 10 per race.

Dean Kannemeyer’s Cosmic Highway, a winner on debut, contests the Gr3 Cape Of Good Hope Nursery (Pic – Chase Liebenberg)

The first three races on the card – all features – have managed to field only 6, 6 and 5 runners respectively. And the experiment of moving the Gr3 Cape Of Good Hope Nursery and Gr3 Kenilworth Fillies Nursery, apparently in the hope of attracting larger fields, has clearly not met with success.

But there is plenty of quality on show, despite the fact that only two away trainers in Dennis Drier and Ashley Fortune field runners on the day.

The inaugural running of the R550 000 Cape Yearling Sale Cup lift the numbers on the day and boosts the Pick 6 degree of difficulty.
