Cape Winter Series: Marina Could Take On Boys

Brother Marinaresco won the first two legs in 2016

The Cape Racing Winter Series has been the 21st century stepping stone for the likes of superstar Pocket Power, as well as African Night Sky and the undefeated Singapore-bound Katak.

The local winter triple crown is run from a mile to 2400m over eight weeks.

Sadly, there again is no sponsor backing the series, which has produced champions over the years.

Ten entries, including July winner Marinaresco’s full sister Marina, were received on Friday for the first leg, the R125 000 Gr3 Variety Club Mile, which will be run at Kenilworth on 24 April.

Interestingly, the Candice Bass-Robinson-trained Marina’s 2017 Vodacom Durban July winning brother Marinaresco beat the 2017 Met winner Whisky Baron when winning the first two legs of the series in 2016.
After winning the second leg – the Winter Classic – he travelled to the East Coast when he ran second behind The Conglomerate in the July that year.
Justin Snaith and Glen Kotzen are the only other trainers with entries.

A bonus of R200 000 will be paid to the connections of the horse that wins all three legs.

The 2021 Cape Racing Winter Series for the fairer sex kicks off on the same afternoon with the running of the R85 000 Listed Sweet Chestnut Stakes over a mile.

The numbers look better for the fillies with 18 entries received.

Supplementary entries are due on Friday 16 April, with declarations on Monday 19 April.
