SA Stipe’s Champ de Mars Debut

Started as a photo-finish judge

Former Eastern Cape Stipendiary Steward Julia Keevy will officiate as a Stipendiary Steward as from this Sunday at the Champ de Mars in Mauritius.

Ms Julia Merle Keevy’s career in horseracing started as a Photo-finish Judge in 2001, officiating part-time at Fairview Racecourse in the Eastern Cape whilst completing her studies in Art and Design and later lecturing at the Mandela University Art Department in Port Elizabeth.

In 2011, she joined the National Horseracing Authority full time in Johannesburg as a Stipendiary Steward, officiating at Turffontein, Vaal, Kimberley, Kenilworth and the Mashonaland Turf Club.

In 2014 Ms Keevy was transferred to the Eastern Cape board where her duties extended to the general administration of the NHRA office in the Eastern Cape. Ms Keevy also holds a Master’s Degree in Business Administration.

In a statement Keevy said: “I grew up riding horses on our family farm in the Eastern Cape which has given me a sound background working with animals. The research I conducted towards my masters’ degree focused on the economic viability of the South African Thoroughbred Breeding sector, which together with business processes developed through the MBA has allowed me to apply a broader perspective to the integrated system and workings of the horseracing industry as a whole. I hope to positively contribute to the MTC and stakeholders in the industry going forward.”
